Kev McDonald Interview

Post by Jakubs Tash » Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:24 am

Interview with Kev McDonald for Open Goal. Really good listen! Talks about every stage of his career so far and comes across very well.

I really liked McDonald. Had loads of ability but unfortunately went off the rails a little when Coyle left so never fulfilled his potential at Burnley.

He made a few big mistakes at Burnley but he's not a bad lad as such.

Had that issue at Burnley with the Man City game when Robbie Blake got away with it - but then fell out spectacularly with Howe in the following season. I think the lad had some real issues but in fairness has rebuilt his career although he's struggled to get a game in the last two seasons at Fulham.

That night we beat Arsenal in the "Capital Punishment" League Cup run I thought I was watching a player who would go to the very top. Beautiful second goal.

Because he'd scored those goals, when we drew them in the FA Cup later in the season they put McDonald up for the media stuff. He turned round and told the media that if he thought he'd have to do this he wouldn't have scored those goals in the League Cup. He said it with such a straight face they thought he was being serious.

He certainly did really well for both clubs but he explains in the chat why some Sheffield Utd fans don't like him due to the way he left the club and even got escorted out of a Sheffield hotel due to being abused.

Interesting stuff - sounds like he’s had a bit of luck along the way too / or winged it based on natural ability rather than fitness !
Not great with numbers - he went to the 141 club at half time of the City game and fletcher signed for £15m did he say ?!!!

Seems a good lad but is a lesson how easily you can throw it all away when you are on thousands of pounds a week and like a drink....and your mates like a drink...and your manager and coaches don’t care you like a drink !

Wonder whether that Fabregas story was the 1-1 draw at the Turf ? I remember that Fabregas came off injured before half time but before that it was possibly the best display I have seen from any footballer live at the Turf. He was absolutely everywhere and could have easily scored 4 or 5 goals.

Surprised he didn’t mention the great cup runs that promotion season and his fantastic display and brace against Arsenal at the Turf. He had a lot of talent.
