ARTICLE: Adrian Heath – March 1996 to June 1997
I suspended this feature once the football restarted so back to it now and hopefully get it completed before the new season starts.

I'm struggling to remember Bambo
Did he play any reserve games for us?

He didn't half let a lot of clubs get under his skin...
Re: ARTICLE: Adrian Heath – March 1996 to June 1997
I think he went on the pre season tour wherever that was. I definitely saw a picture of him playing in a game in either the Express or Lancashire Telegraph.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:42 pmI'm struggling to remember Bambo

Did any witness Marco Gentile's performance at Stoke for us? (Think that was where he played)
Was he really bad or did he just fall out with Waddle? The Remco Van Der Schaaf of the 90s

I actually asked Waddle at a fans' Q&A evening why he never played Gentile, and from what I remember, the answer was something to do with Gentile being signed by Heath as a man to man marker, and this wasn't the way that Waddle and Roeder wanted us playing.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:22 pmDid any witness Marco Gentile's performance at Stoke for us? However, judging by the way we defended that season, a defender who marked tightly may have been a good idea!

He was billed by Heath as a massive signing. He came to the Turf and the local papers were allowed to take a photo of the back of his head but no more because Heath wanted him kept under wraps so other clubs weren’t alerted.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:42 pmI'm struggling to remember Bambo

Bambo & Torsten Boer went on the pre-season trip to Northern Ireland. Bambi scored against Ards but was nowhere near good enough.
I remember having a load of foreign trialists in a reserve game one night on the Turf. Vince Overson played and told me he was the only player in the back four who spoke English.

Exactly. Didn't we have Winstanley and Blatherwick at the back that season?fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:30 pmI actually asked Waddle at a fans' Q&A evening why he never played Gentile, and from what I remember, the answer was something to do with Gentile being signed by Heath as a man to man marker, and this wasn't the way that Waddle and Roeder wanted us playing.

I thought he was at Boavista when we had him on trial?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:40 pmNo is the easy answer. Think this is him.

Not according to that club guide.
Maybe it's a different Bambo?

We were signing him from Boavista In 1996 but according to that Wikipedia page he left them in 1994 and was at Estrela da Amadora in 96fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:44 pmI thought he was at Boavista when we had him on trial?

Surely there couldn’t have been 2 ineffective strikers named Bambo?

That's what I was questioning. However, Wikipedia is sometimes known as 'Wrongipedia'.
Either way, 17 league goals in his entire career suggests we didn't miss out!

Gentile had a half decent game at Stoke but we were very poor over all. From memory we lost 4-1 but I think he was one of only a couple of players who had any credit to their name for the performance.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:22 pmDid any witness Marco Gentile's performance at Stoke for us? I think it was 2-0 at their place after getting spanked at home in the first leg.

4-0 at home, 2-0 away.
Think it was our first ever trip to the Britannia.

Thought so, it was still early on but I remember coming off the home leg and thinking this manager hasn’t a clue what he’s doing. I think Stoke were in the division about us so a defeat wasn’t unexpected but the performance was just awful to add to our dismal league showings.
Thankfully we stumbled upon Little and Payton.

We were within inches of basement football again. Abysmal Waddle football.

It makes you wonder what would have happened to us if we'd gone down in 1997/98. Would Stan have come to rescue us? Probably not.
Re: ARTICLE: Adrian Heath – March 1996 to June 1997
My dad sometimes says “I’ve been watching football for 60 years” when trying to justify a football related argument. I respond with “you have been talking boll*cks for 60 years”
“Nothing short of disastrous”
3 seasons later we are promoted
