19 years ago (almost), 9/11. Where did the time go?

Got me thinking about all those other ‘landmark’ times in our lives. The Moon landings. Killings of JFK, Lennon, Diana. The loss of Elvis at 42. And personal friends and family.

Got me thinking about all those other ‘landmark’ times in our lives. The Moon landings. Killings of JFK, Lennon, Diana. The loss of Elvis at 42. And personal friends and family.

Frightening how long ago 9/11 is but how recent it feels.

That said the world has changed beyond recognition since then. I remember being at college and someone came in the class to tell us. I didnt realise the magnitude of it then, never mind how much impact it would have on the world as we know it. A bit like this virus now!

Most of the other incidents were before my time. But remember how much of an impact the diana one had. We even signed the book of condolence at the mechanics. Seemed a bit surreal but the whole country seemed affected by it. And that was pre social media. So was definitely a big thing. Remember going to devon on holiday the day of her funeral and listening to it in the car and I was only a kid.

Wow all but the first two also stick in my head and schumacher is such a tragic one.

The Iraq one was particularly powerful as I remember the first iraq war as a kid. But also because friends and family signed up around the time of iraq which made it all the more real.

Gazzas tears, vaguely remember as my first world cup i could remember. But more remember the cameroon game for some reason. Even though i was only young. Dont remember previous tournaments.

The Premier League starting. And United winning the title in the 98th minute. What might have been for both United and Fergie (as well as Villa) had united lost. Also the treble won by united seemed huge at the time. I think only Inter have done it since?

One theory of time passing quicker with age is that it is a function of your years lived thus if you reflect you seem to have spent ages in the infants, less at Junior school and even less at senior school. Going from 10 to 20 years of age is like going from 20-40 years of age. A year at 50 years is akin to about one month at age of 5.

One thing about time is it muddies my memory. Quite often my memories don't correlate with when I thought they happened. They happened but not necessarily in the order my mind has processed them. One example being my first job I started in 1989. I somehow erased a year of that job from my memory. It wasn't until I started piecing together a time frame based on the exact point of the OP. That being remembering dates that were relevant news events. I was at that bloody job a year longer than I thought.

Time is an odd thing

Events that feel recent, happened decades ago and vice versa.

The past 20 years have seemed to whizz by
The London Olympics was 8yrs ago but only seams like a couple
The Russia World Cup was 2yrs ago but feels like it was only last year (mainly because the World Cup & Euro tournaments are in 2yr cycles and it hasn’t happened this year)

My grandfather, who I knew well, was born in 1912, so a link for me to memories over a hundred years old. A hundred years before he was born Napoleon was still riding high, there was still slavery in the British Empire, Japan was still a closed country to westerners, the United States has only a tiny Pacific coastline, Spain still ruled most of the Americas, and the tomato was still widely thought to be poisonous.

My Grandmother was born in 1891, on a farm just outside Thirsk, and told us that one of her earliest memories was Victoria's Diamond Jubilee ( 1897 ), when she was told to shake the hand of a man, said to be 100 years old, who'd fought at the Battle of Waterloo ...
Our son was born in 1986, and Grannie passed on in her 99th year in 1991 ..... It has occurred to me that should he reach 90, in 2076, he'll be able to tell his great-Grandchildren that he knew someone who'd met a Waterloo veteran !! It would be the equivalent today of having met a relative, who'd met a man who witnessed the birth of Pitt the Younger in 1759 ....

Today I collected my Granddaughter's A level results from her school as she was on a family holiday in Corfu and wanted confirmation of her results so she could enjoy the rest of her holiday.
She got the grades that guaranteed her university place.

This is it. Living history. The stretch of living memory from person to person. I love it. To an historian it’s no more than a meeting of people, but I’ve always seen it as a link to the past. As much as history is facts and myths, history can also be tactile.
