Only 134 COVID-19 patients in hospital
Only 134 COVID-19 patients in hospital
The population of the North West is 7.3 million
Figures released yesterday state only 134. Patients in hospitals throughout the region with COVID
That percentage is minuscule
I have been and still am following the rules 100% even with the new Preston lock up rules
I have just had a text from the Doctor saying cases in Preston are rising and telling me where to go for a test if I have symptoms.
More tests more positive results but seemingly only mild effects for all but 134 out of 7.3m
The whole thing seemed to go to pot when Dominic Cummings went gadding about. Folk either fully follow rules now or do a Cummings
I think we need to start looking at the number of people who are actually ill and if it continues to be so small then let’s get back to normal and get back on the Turf

Re: Only 134 COVID-19 patients in hospital
I sort of agree Spike, but I dont think it is as simple as saying that number of cases are going up purely because we are testing more. I think when deciding on local lockdowns it is more around infection rate per population that is the deciding factor.
I would rather we be too careful than to lax though. My cousin died of Covid right at the start of this. On the stats it will show he had underlying health conditions(diabetes) but he was just 56 and was living a full and active life.
That being said, I think if he had caught it now, rather than right at the very start of this, I think he would have faired much better. Doctors seem to be having far greater success in treating and treating early.

Some might say he's indirectly killed a lot of people by giving out the wrong message, that many people went on to follow.

Don't disagree that Cummings was daft. But he took an inch, and if it is an excuse then some people are using it to take a mile. Cummings didn't take the family to a crowded Bournemouth beach. He didn't take them shopping and ignored wearing a mask.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:06 amSome might say he's indirectly killed a lot of people by giving out the wrong message, that many people went on to follow.
The truth is the selfish people ignoring the guidelines would have done so anyway, with or without Cummings. That doesn't excuse Cummings, but it certainly isn't his fault the situation we find ourselves in today.
It isn't Covid that is stopping us from getting our lives back to normal, just the actions of that mindless minority.

For me sensibile behaviour is still needed. But we really need to start to see more detail around mortality rate, post infection issues, more detail on who is vulnerable who isnt etc.Spike wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:54 amThe population of the North West is 7.3 million

Caution needed through winter. But without transparency and progress people will get fed up and give up as you mentioned re cummings.
My view is
Stay alert
Protect the vulnerable
Get back to normal
Its more and more obvious that the vast majority, particularly of working age and / or in good health will be fine.

"Protecting the vulnerable" can be taken too far. A lot of people who are vulnerable to coronavirus infection are also vulnerable to loneliness, depression, dementia, etc. How long have doctors said that old people need to get out and about for their mental health, they need to do things, they need to go places, they need to speak to people? If this goes on any longer they will have missed the whole summer.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 4:56 pmMy view is

And for about 300,000 over eighties, this is their last summer. To what extent should we try and manage the currently tiny risk?

We need caution and common sense.

Anyone who thinks that it's only a minority who aren't following the rules is deluded.

fidel the majority in the North East that I see seem to be following the rules. The most though I guess will have interpreted the rules in there own way and to suit there own life as I did. I have been social distancing since well before we went into lockdown but I never fully followed the lockdown rules I didn’t do anything that was wrong though (honest I never drove to Barnard Castle) and always practiced social distancing

Might explain why there haven't been local lockdowns in the north east then?JarrowClaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:56 pmfidel the majority in the North East that I see seem to be following the rules. Believe me, in my job I'm in the perfect position to observe people's attitude and compliance to the restrictions, and I have to say that it's more than a minority who just don't give a toss.
Sad but true, and no doubt these pillocks will be the first to moan when stricter rules are brought in.

New cases in the West Midlands where I live have risen slightly (my council ward has had no new cases in 9 weeks now!) but it is still low compared to the former cotton/wool belt or Leicester for example. Despite the increase in new cases the number of people admitted to hospital with Covid has fallen as have the number of cases still occupying a hospital bed. The local government (tier 2) data for this past 7 days will be interesting when they are released early next week as they will include the Eid celebrations.

Absolutely. My understanding was lockdown was to protect the nhs. Well we did that. But now people are terrified or not even permitted to visit their doctor for other things that need checking.bfcmik wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:27 pmNew cases in the West Midlands where I live have risen slightly (my council ward has had no new cases in 9 weeks now!) but it is still low compared to the former cotton/wool belt or Leicester for example. People are terrified of doing normal stuff. That will be detrimental to health.
Then on the other hand you have the other extreme packed out pubs and the like.

Only people are not dying. That's the point. At least not of it. With it maybe, but not so many.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:06 amSome might say he's indirectly killed a lot of people by giving out the wrong message, that many people went on to follow.
Re: Only 134 COVID-19 patients in hospital
Just to be strictly accurate, Cummings didn't give out the message at all. He kept quiet about it. It was the press who gave out the message, again and again, that Cummings had made this trip; if they hadn't be so determined to see him sacked about this marginal perhaps-breach-of-rule, then perhaps the message wouldn't have been received so loud and clear?FactualFrank wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:06 amSome might say he's indirectly killed a lot of people by giving out the wrong message, that many people went on to follow.
I'm still not convinced by the idea that moving children of married parents about the country is so much more dangerous than moving the children of single parents, anyway. There seems to be no scientific logic about it.
