I don't want City to lose but find it amusing if they do .... perhaps if they hadn't cheated their way out of the ban ... and took their punishment I might think differentlyFactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 9:46 pmQuite surprised the majority wanted City to lose. But it must be generations.
Back in the 90s, we wanted whoever was supporting the top league to win. So guess the ones wanting City to lose are the teens.

Re: City v Lyon
That wasn’t the Man City I’ve seen so many times this season. Even so, thought they would win it once they’d equalised.
Re: City v Lyon
Just how important was that miss from Sterling!
Re: City v Lyon
The problem is with Man City is that they have no problem beating the cannon fodder in the Premier league but against the better sides they are not good enough.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 9:58 pmThat wasn’t the Man City I’ve seen so many times this season. Guardiola might be a brilliant coach when it comes to attacking but he hasn't got a clue about the defensive side of the games when up against better teams.

This has been a good day. Played a decent round of golf, watched Lyon beat Citeh. Going for nap then firing up the barbie for some chicken and spuds. Doesn't get much better than this

Re: City v Lyon
Taxi for Pep, he can't win the CL out with Barca it would seem, and that last 20 minutes was a comedy of schoolboy errors.
Well done to Lyon they were disciplined and took their chances when they came, but City laid the 2nd and 3rd goals on a plate.
An all French final is possible, as is an all German final.
This is a wake up call to all those who thought 4 English sides reaching both European finals last season meant the PL was the dominate force in world football, clearly this isn't the case and unless Man Utd can prevail in the EL it'll be a lean year for English clubs in Europe.
The PL might be the richest league in the world, but the jury's definitely out as too whether it's the best.
3 CL games against Lyon for City under Pep, and zero wins to date, I told you it wouldn't be a cakewalk.

If Raheem had concentrated on his finishing as much as the BLM campaign during the last few months then City would probably be in the UCL semi-final.

Re: City v Lyon
City have shown many times they can hammer teams, then get beat by a really poor performance. Liverpool have been winning games, when not playing well, all season, and as we know a good team wins even when not playing well.
The team selection was odd. KDB playing on the wing instead of pulling strings in the middle. Jesus just isn't a presence as a target man, they miss Aguero massively. The least said about the back line the better. Rodrigo and Cancello were awful.

Also interesting to note that Phil Foden didn't play. If Guardiola rates him then why didn't he get any game time?

Rileybobs, I think the difference was that English teams in those days were full of British players. Now they don't feel like English teams. I'm glad City lost.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 9:52 pmI was always the same. Always rooted for the English side be it Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal. I think the difference now is more that we have a personal dislike for so many of these teams having played against them for a good number of years. Going back 15 years we were so far removed from these clubs that it was hard to have a strong dislike.

Couldn’t have happened to a bigger cheat. Bye City. These one legged, knockout matches are creating a lot of chaos, and it’s fun to watch. Sterling missing that point blank chance will haunt him forever. Absolute madness that.

The whole tournament should be knockout, just like the old days. Ditto the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, er EUFA Cup, er Europa League.

Re: City v Lyon
Every time Lyon went forward (and it wasn't too often) they looked dangerous. Why make a tactical change to play with a back 3 in such an important game. For me it didn't make sense. Let the opposition worry about your format instead of the other way around. I'd have preferred them starting with a back 4 and having Fernandinho in a defensive central midfield position. Think Pep and City are becoming too obsessed with the CL and it's clouding his judgement.

Re: City v Lyon
The spine of any team tells you the quality. City haven’t replaced Kompany and have no cover for Aguero or Jesus in the system they use. With Aguero being out they were reliant on Jesus having a great game. As usual he didn’t. So they were light weight in half of the spine.
A totally unbalanced team 4 real class MFs with another 4 available to replace them but soft in key areas. Good.

Few posters getting a bit over dramatic after a one off game. Suggesting the PL is poor. Really? A team that finished 7th in France beat 2nd in the PL in a one off game suddenly means the PL is poor?
People have weird opinions on football when Burnley aren’t involved.

OL looked decent, especially on the break, but the only reason they won was because of the many mistakes City made. City have shown the same frailty many times in the league this season. If tonight's match was replayed 9 times, City would win at least 8 of them.
I'm glad they went out, just because they deserved to. With the form Bayern are showing I should think they could have score for fun against that Ciry defence.
Re: City v Lyon
And bankrolled by dodgy Arab money in City's case. I didn't mind Spurs when Poch was there, but couldn't care less about how the rest of our teams do in Europe tbh.

Re: City v Lyon
I don’t know why people constantly feel the need to play down the quality of the PL. Along with the German and Spanish leagues the English league dominates the European competitions most seasons. A very average Spurs side made the final last season and 3 of the last 4 finalist have been from the Premier League.
Man City are possibly the best side in Europe on their day, but they have a very soft underbelly which is exposed far too often. It’s not really a surprise that they were knocked out in a one-off game - amusing though it certainly is.

I’m not sure that’s the case for me to be honest. I remember cheering on Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool in Champions League finals in the not too distant past and those teams had plenty of non-British players. My dislike of these clubs has come about since we’ve been competing with them every season.

Re: City v Lyon
Pep --12 seasons managing clubs who have won their respective leagues in 8 of those seasons and, in the other seasons, had also qualified for ECL.
He last won it in 2010/11 when the Barcelona team included Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, David Villa and Dani Alves amongst one or two other decent players.
No doubting that Pep is a good manager, however, I wonder if he 'tinkers' too much.
