Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
I know there will be plenty but here's a few that I remember...
Akinbiyi away at Luton,Hat trick when we had Spicer in goal.
Blake v Spurs at home in League cup.
Gifton Noel Williams v Barnsley (Hat trick)
Heaton at Old Trafford
Clarke Carlisle at Wembley
But the one that stands out for me is Brian Jensen at home to Reading in the 08/9 promotion season. They absolutely battered us and he made save after save and we ended up winning 1-0. They could of player all night and wouldn't of beaten the beast. He truly was exceptional that night.

Best individual performance I have seen is no doubt Robbie Blake against Spurs League Cup semi final on the turf. He was unstoppable that night. Amazing performance from him and the team and one I will never forget.

Quite possibly, but how many of us actually saw it? (I think that if we are going to express an opinion, it rather needs to be based on our own experiences, not what we've read)ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 7:59 pmCan't really think of owt to top that, off the top of my head.

I'd agree, can't think many Burnley fans could have seen that performance from Thomson.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 8:03 pmQuite possibly, but how many of us actually saw it? Another vote for Harry Thomson at the Battle of Naples. And a year earlier Irvine hat trick in fa cup at White Hart Lane. No wasn't at Naples but was at White Hart Lane

More or less every keeper we have had has a had a great game at some point.
Outfield performers a bit rarer.
Bikey on debut against United at home.
Little away at Bradford
Francis away at Plymouth

Aye, we've been blessed with some great keepers in our history, Jerry Dawson, Jimmy Strong, Colin McDonald, Adam Blacklaw, Alan Stevenson, Tom Heaton, Nick Pope and others.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 8:38 pmMore or less every keeper we have had has a had a great game at some point.

But the greatest 90 minute performance was Harry Thomson against Napoli. That was on another level.

This immediately sprung to mind from when I've been watching (since 98)
If you want to use a Jensen one his performance V arsenal in the cup was far better than v Reading. He must have faced about 7 1 v 1s and came out on top every time.

It's not specified in the OP that you have to have seen the match/performance first hand.
The question is....... Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
I think Thomson goes close myself.

Think the performance was tempered by the quality of the opposing forward - the ever modest Nicklas Bendtner who, believed himself to be world class, but was, in reality, shite.

I think it might have been Mark Kendall in the fogged off game and definitely Pearce when we’re knocked out. Marriott was with us much earlier in the season.

Have the rules changed though. As you never used to have to have been?
For me some of the performances in the sixties were incredible. I never went but I’ve seen them first hand. Equally some of those 80s and 90s games were abysmal. I didn’t even have to watch to know that. Teletext was fine.

You would struggle to find footage of most of our football in the 1960s. The Thomson one is based on reports from others who were there.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 10:35 pmPlenty can judge from tv.

And showing that post of mine just means you have totally misunderstood the report. There is a huge difference between watching a game on tv and not seeing it all.
Sorry but your constant, childish attempt at trying to point score against me has seen you fall flat on your face again.

Kelly, Lawton, Freeman, Dawson, Brown - never commented on any of their individual performances because I never saw any of them play, simple as that. I’ve certainly spoken about Lawton & Brown being favourites of my dad but I’m not able to post comments on any of their performances.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 10:40 pmHow many times on here have you waxed lyrical of performances from Bob Kelly, Tommy Lawton, Bert Freeman, Jerry Dawson, Alan Brown, Jimmy Mac and many, many more?

Is it unrealistic to be inspired by what you have read? I remember reading about Thomson's exploits in Naples, it was all over the sports press. I wasn't there so I can't be impressed??
Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
Super Johnny Francis at Plymouth, 2nd leg of play off semi-final. Not the finest in terms of skill, but significant in the comeback of BFC.

Glen away at Bradford in 2001.
The very definition of unplayable, scored two and should have had a hat trick (if memory serves he also hit the bar and it looked borderline over the line). They could not deal with him at all, he was just beating players for fun - Alan Moore on the left also great that day.
I believe it was following this game the Sunday papers actually ran a story that Sven Goran Eriksson was looking at calling him up, such was his form. Not sure if there was ever any truth in that or not but he obviously didn’t.

Steve1956 has a fantastic thread on here "Burnley FC in pictures". If anyone has the patience to trawl through the various pages, there's a wonderful reference to Thomson's performance that night in Naples (with photos) capped off by an incredible penalty save that kept the score at 0-0. He was simply sensational that night, unbeatable in fact.

That night immediately springs to mind but I was thinking more of Andy Cole as the individual performer. I remember when he was substituted, all four sides of Loftus Road clapped him off.
