Ade came on from Robbie Blake I think at half time. The pair of them were sensational in the second half.

Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
If I really have to repeat myself, it was the countless sensational saves he made right throughout the game capped off by the penalty save to prevent Napoli from scoring at all. Not often a keeper is described as unbeatable but that was the verdict of the entire press of that game.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 11:07 pmWhat was it about Thomson’s performance that day that made it stand out for you as the best individual performance you’ve seen? It was an afternoon game too.
You well know I regard Colin Mcdonald as our greatest ever keeper (and yes I saw him many times), but nothing Colin produced, or any other keeper for that matter, came close to Harry Thomson's overall display in Napoli on that special night.

The point I’m trying to make is that you must be basing it on the views of others unless you were there. And it was an afternoon game, I was in school while it was being played.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 11:17 pmIf I really have to repeat myself, it was the countless sensational saves he made right throughout the game capped off by the penalty save to prevent Napoli from scoring at all. I only saw McDonald play reserve games when he was trying to make a comeback after the broken leg. My dad said he was the best and Jimmy Mac told me the same.

I go back a bit, but got to say without goals or great saves involved, seeing some of joey Barton's manic commitment to the cause warmed my heart, relatively recent I know, but I loved that level of determination in Burnley colours.

I knew we’d played it on the Sunday because of the internationals and we were without Gareth Taylor who was on duty with Wales.jedi_master wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 11:45 pmIt was the day after having looked! 1st September the 1-5 game, 2nd September the game at Bradford.

Probably should be phrased as the most effective or exciting performance for you - as an individual.
It's lazy of me to say Robbie's second half against Spurs, I loved Taffy's cameo against Wolves at Wembley, Glen at BWFC and Anfield. There was a game at Bramall Lane where Peter Noble floated above the pitch for the entire game. There were many more but the common factor is they reinforced my pride in BFC and our town.

Gonna put a mention out for Glen Little vs Tottenham in the League Cup in 2002/03.
He came on as a sub in the first half and turned the game round when we were 0-1 down to a Premier League side. Him and Robbie Blake tore Spurs apart and we won 2-1.

Not the best ever, but Chris Eagles at Bramhall Lane in the promotion season under Coyle has to be worth an honourable mention.

Blake v Spurs for me too.
Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
I've said this before, but the Napoli game was shown on the news at the time and the penalty wasn't actually saved. Harry went the right way but the ball hit the post, he didn't touch it.
I agree with the comments that say it must be a performance you have personally seen. I've never seen the Matrix but I have read how good it is so its my favourite film? Doesn't make sense.

Another vote for Robbie v Spurs in the semi. He made international footballers look poor that night.
Also an honourable mention for the performance of Joey Barton after Middlesboro had scored in the game that Michael Keane grabbed the equaliser late on.

Yup. I was behind the goal at Bradford that night in the Sherpa freight rover autoglass thing. Wasn’t a massive fan of Pearce, but he was outstanding that night, and even saved a penalty, which is something he wasn’t noted for. The LET the next day gave him 10/10 saying they’d never given a player that score before.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 7:48 pmChris Pearce away at Bradford.

That one popped into my head too. Not on the same level as some others mentioned but stands out as it was so far ahead of most of his other performances - although he wasn’t bad, just never reached those heights again.

The three that come to mind, two are obvious ones already mentioned, Ward v Stoke away and Blake at home v Tottenham, the third is a bit of a left field comment, but the home game v Man City in 2018 which we drew 1-1, Vokes that day was unplayable and won every header against Kompany in the game and completely bossed him.

The Ralph Coates 5-1 was one of the first games I attended and made him an immediate hero for life. When I saw this thread I immediately thought of Glen Little v Sours in the League Cup as Rowls has highlighted above. Watched that game in a pub In St Albans and Super Glen was unstoppable as we turned it around.
I think Ben Mee and Tarks have put in many sensational performances quietly in the last 2 or 3 years. I always remember Ben somehow physically dominating Lukaku, who is a man mountain, at the Turf v Everton

Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
I recall a night match at Turf Moor where Wade Elliott was simply sensational v Charlton Athletic. He ended up scoring a great goal, too, in a 1-0 win. Can't remember the season( typical for someone of my age who remembers the 60's/70's better than more recent times). Don't think it was the 'Wembley' season but could have been. Some good shouts on here with Robbie v Spurs and Tom Heaton v Man Utd amongst the best with a special mention for Ralph Coates in the 60's v Leeds.

Peter Noble's display against Norwich in 1975 when he scored four deserves a mention, as does Peter Mellor's against Leeds when he produced save after save to keep it at 1-1 in 1969.

Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
Has to Willie Morgan against Man Utd on Boxing Day 1963, his performance against West Ham in 66 has been mentioned earlier but having seen both the Utd performance was better imo. I was sat in the ‘new’ cricket field stand for the Peter Mellor performance against Leeds, that was special.
I have 2 other memories, one of which illustrates how life has changed over the years. I went out one evening to use a phone box to ring my girlfriend and noticed the floodlights were on so getting my priorities right I forgot about the girlfriend and walked down to the Turf to find there was an FA youth cup game taking place against Grimsby. It was the first time I had seen Morgan and he just destroyed Grimsby, I was so pleased we did not have a phone, or I would have missed it! A few years later I had my first glimpse of Steve Kindon as he ran riot against Man City as part of the team that went on to win the Youth Cup.

I was at the game v Man Utd. in 1963 but can't genuinely remember any outstanding individual performances though if I recall correctly the goals were scored by Lochhead(4) and Irvine?(2). Sounds like they were well supplied then with chances.
Also went to the return fixture at OT two days later where a couple of their wingers, George Best and Willie Anderson sort of levelled things up.

Seem to recall Ings having a very good game at home against QPR in our first promotion season under Dyche. Think they were top of the league at the time and we won 2-0, with Ings scoring both.
Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
Maybe slightly off topic, but I met a guy a couple of weeks ago in a pub in Aberdeen (before 2nd lock down) and he saw my Burnley top and told me he played in the same team as a young guy who played a blinder against Burnley in the 60's in a cup game. Burnley signed him on the back of that performance. Clue: Grimsby Town.

I’m with you on this one. Brian Jensen was unbeatable that night. Certainly the best goalkeeping performance I’ve ever seen and I will not argue against it being the best Burnley player performance I’ve ever seen.TommyJohnson wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 7:38 pmI know there will be plenty but here's a few that I remember...
Akinbiyi away at Luton,Hat trick when we had Spicer in goal.
Blake v Spurs at home in League cup.
Gifton Noel Williams v Barnsley (Hat trick)
Heaton at Old Trafford
Clarke Carlisle at Wembley
But the one that stands out for me is Brian Jensen at home to Reading in the 08/9 promotion season. They absolutely battered us and he made save after save and we ended up winning 1-0. They could of player all night and wouldn't of beaten the beast. He truly was exceptional that night.
It makes up for heading the Wolves attacker the following season.

Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
The ones that come immediately to my mind are.
Heaton at OT, he was a one man wall that day, and how he kept Zlatan out I'll never know.
Ings at OT also, he run them ragged in the first half, and he could easily have had a hat-trick that night.
Grewcock in the Orient game, he scored and assisted in the space of a few minutes, in arguably the most important game in our history.
Iwelumo in the 4-3 thriller against Nobbers, he was on fire that day.
And finally not one that many will remember, but Barton at Brighton in that crunch promotion clash was awesome, and he ensured we kept going right to the death.

No, the Norwich match was in the early/mid-70s, in the 1st division; any match with Cochrane playing was in the late 70s in the 2nd division, although I don't remember the match you refer to.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 5:17 amThe week before, or after? Re: Best ever indivual performance by a Burnley player ?
Very few individual performances stand out in my time watching. Blake as I've mentioned, where he terrorised a very good Spurs team.
I think Ben Mee's performance at Palace last season is worth an honorary mention/nod. A true captain's performance and a winning goal to boot in extraordinary circumstances. I thought his performance and leadership was exemplary and deserves a mention, albeit not for standout brilliance but for sheer determination, organisation and doggedness.
