Daily Mirror
In the interest of fair play I would like to balance out the topics, so I would like to introduce a left wing red top rag.

Maybe it’s all newspapers but I honestly feel like they’ve been disappointed that the death toll has dropped, have a read of the daily update, it’s always along with the lines of ‘death toll increased by 4 but’.... and fill the rest of the page with bad news

When I was a student, I use to nip down the library and read The Morning Star and The Daily Mail every day.

I'd argue very strongly that one is a mainstream right-wing paper and the other an extremist publication with the tiniest of a fraction of the other so they aren't similar ...dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 8:55 pmWhen I was a student, I use to nip down the library and read The Morning Star and The Daily Mail every day.
But that's not the point. Well done for varying your reading. If only more people would do this. It ought to be mandatory for students.
These algorithmic days keeps us all penned into boxes of our own making. It's stultifying and corrosive to healthy debate.

Re: Daily Mirror
Bad news sells papers. Headlines such as 5% of population may die due to virus would sell more than one which stated 95% of us absolutely safe.

My old work mate brought a copy of the mirror in to work every day as his Mrs wouldn't let him read a paper with a page 3 girl in.
About the only reason you would read it.

They make money off peddling bad news, sensationalising everything in to a disaster.
They were devastated that the NHS wasn’t overwhelmed, that there were plenty of ventilators, that they built four super hospitals in days, that the furlough scheme has been widely used, extended and largely successful to date. Having spent months reporting g the death toll in minute detail they barely reported the reduction. Instead they make a big song and dance about a few unhappy A level students being unhappy with their results (I knew three who were all overjoyed with theirs, albeit I’m sure that’s not a representative sample).
And it’s not the Mirror or the “left wing” media In general. All the media are at it. I don’t bother with any of it now. Find out most things that are going on in the world from here.

Just of interest. Are we doing every newspaper? I'm looking forward to discussing the Financial Times.

How times have changed. Imagine pitching a new cartoon as ... it's a work shy Geordie, spends all day lying on the settee, or at the Bookies or the pub. Always getting into fights, beats his missus up and wont pay his rent. Any takers?

Newspapers play an important role in society. If people stopped buying them. Spies wouldn't be able to meet on park benches!!aiboforceN wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 9:40 pmGenuine question... why would anyone buy any newspaper?

Re: Daily Mirror
Rowls, I have to say that I regard you as one who seeks to avoid healthy debate, as you so obviously did on the anti-semitism thread when you repeatedly avoided the issue of whether anti-Israeli statements were anti-semitic. You kept saying something like, 'it's too difficult to explain', which really meant, 'I want to avoid the issue'. Likewise on climate change. You seem much happier with innuendo, with never a good word for the Labour Party and never a bad word for the Conservatives. Not really healthy, or a proper debate.

Oh you're a slippery eel, Rowls. First it was 'It's too complex to judge', now it's 'you're not sensible enough for me to debate with'. The truth is your position on both anti-semitism and on climate change is very difficult to sustain in a healthy debate, so again a resort to obfuscation and avoiding genuine healthy debate.
