Possibly Dwight for England

Post by claretburns » Sat Aug 22, 2020 1:13 pm

Gareth Southgate is expected to name his squad on Tuesday for next months England fixtures. It is rumoured due to Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea reaching the later stages of European competition none of their players will be selected for the squad, so could be possible for Dwight to get a chance of a call up?

I hope so. It'll bang a few more million onto his price tag.

Out of interest, who was in the last England squad? You'd imagine he would have moved ahead of players like Jesse Lingard etc

Last England squad was in November 2019 and the squad list:

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool)
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Ross Barkley (Chelsea)
John Stones (Manchester City)
Fabian Delph (Everton)
Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)
Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur)
Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)
Tom Heaton (Aston Villa)
Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)
Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur)
Jordan Pickford (Everton)
Tammy Abraham (Chelsea)
Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Nick Pope (Burnley)
Ben Chilwell (Leicester City)
Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)
Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth)
Declan Rice (West Ham United)
Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea)
Mason Mount (Chelsea)
Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa)
James Maddison (Leciester City)
Fikayo Tomori (Chelsea)

Going off the rumour about City, United and Chelsea that would rule out 8 players from that squad as well as another 6 who shouldn't be in the squad, so plenty of places up for grabs.

I’d be surprised if Dwight made it. Pope will and I would hope Tarky does. Can’t see anyone else but I was the one who said no chance about a week before Tom Heaton was called up for the first time.

As the great Meatloaf famously sung 2 out of 3 ain't bad, Pope and Tarks should make the starting XI for that friendly, Mee won't even make the squad.

Southgate reportedly naming his strongest squad as these are two Nations League fixtures. No rest for ManC, ManU or Chelsea players.

There's a fair few on that squad shouldn't be anywhere near the national team:

Pickford - gash
Barkley - 1 in 6 decent games
Delph - just...why?
Abraham - nah
Gomez - only there as he's LFC
Rice - never seen what he does?
Hudson Odoi/Tomori - not yet
Mings - media darling pick

I also think Rashford is a greedy turd who thinks he's the new Ronaldo.

Where's the midfield steel that we need?

Anyway... can't see Dwight making it (unless he signs for a top 6 club, in which case he'll be put in on principal)

if Leeds have any English players they all need to be in the squad as they are the new media darlings and Southgate needs to keep the press onside.

They've got a sprinkling of English players, the only two that might get near the squad are Bamford and Phillips now they're in the PL.

Prior to this last season I agreed with that, but he scored 15 league goals in 34 appearances, plus 3 in the cups and he's 22.

That's a good return and I suspect he will continue to improve.

Tyrone Mings. Christ on a bike, he gets worse every time you see him. If he gets near the squad again, Southgate needs to give his head a wobble.

Squad being announced in next couple of minutes, seems United, City and Chelsea players in contention so any slim chance for Dwight could be gone, hopefully one or both of Tarkowski and Mee included.

This is a long way from the best squad and any goodwill for Southgate must be close to disappearing.

These players are nowhere near international standard -
Gomez
Abraham
Mings
Phillips
Pickford
Rice
Winks
Ward Prowse

I would have thought Tarks would have been in with a shout as Maguire should not imo have been chosen until after his trail.

No LB or LWB in there, unless he's putting Mings there? That's the only way you'd pick him ahead of Tarks. With Chilwell injured and Rose having a poor season Charlie Taylor must have been close to a call up too.

Certainly not the only way he would be selected above Tarks.

Grealish stats from last season in the PL.

8 goals and 6 assists in a struggling team which just avoided relegation, and most pundits agree that he kept them up pretty much single-handedly.

Phillips stats in the Champ.

2 goals and 2 assists in the team that romped to the title.

It's not the only strange selection in the squad, but it's the most curious one in my eyes.

There’s a world of difference between being rated highly, and being ready to play international football. Especially when you haven’t even been tested at the highest level of domestic football!

Can't disagree. I'd add Sancho to that list, albeit more reluctantly. He may be tearing it up in the Bundesliga but not seen him make me sit up and go 'wow this guy can play' at England level yet.

Because he's 20. Cantwell is 22 yet he's in the squad...

Thanks Murger, for a mathematician I'm not doing so well. I checked his date of birth, saw 1999 but didn't bother to see the November.

So I will now add my outrage to him not being selected.
