It becomes illegal when they don't tell their insurance company of any modifications, or when the police can prove its excessively noisy which they generally can't.

After that it's probably down to the council to catch said person breaking the noise pollution rules.

You can add the selfish brain dead pillocks that rev their cars to make them backfire, the other day an old dear walking up the road when some idiot did this and you could see it clearly shocked her, probably won`t be happy till they give some poor bugger a heart attack.

No louder than the stupid noises that standard motorbikes make.

I hate both, boy racer exhausts and motorbikes

Loud exhausts save lives...

If car drivers ever learned proper observation skills, motorcyclists wouldn’t need to advertise the fact they are around by fitting loud exhausts.

Motorcyclist are vulnerable. Yes, some ride like absolute arseholes, but they need all the help they can get to reduce that vulnerability.

I’d fit an illegal exhaust and take the fine week in week out if it meant car drivers knew I was there.

Anyway, motorcycles are a tiny minority on the roads... as conyo says, certain areas are plagued with far more problem children than the odd motorcycle...

I know that, but just thought I'd ask.

I've seen people on here stupidly claim that people are adjusting their headlights up using the adjuster inside the car meaning drivers coming the other way are getting blinded by the glare

I've driven a few, they're good fun, especially with those 4.4ltr Landy engines.

I look on the Lambo site occasionally when it's a big lottery jackpot and I've noticed that sports exhausts can be fitted as an optional extra on some models, clearly they're not loud enough with a normal exhaust

I had a pal who had one, used to insist that we just drove through the tunnel next to Leeds train station.

Not quite the same when you see someone with a drain pipe exhaust fitted to their mums clio on Colne road as the OP suggests.

That’s a noise that cars are allowed to make - nothing wrong with hearing the sound of great engineering. It’s the clowns with clapped out bangers which feel the need to roar around like some kind of racing driver which I despise. Motorbikes are even worse though. What a dreadful noise.

At least they haven’t spent their money on drink and drugs.

The problem is more the fact that they like to show off in residential/ urban areas.

Which is most the cars these young lads and lasses have these days so can't do much about that tbh. I'd prefer the police catching theives up stoops and Accrington rd now they've finally dealt with the pub who had music blasting out till 2 in the morning with no social distancing taking place.

I suspect they're still buying drugs, or more specifically a number will be smoking weed.

Road-side emissions tests an insurance checkup would probably take most of these cars off the road.

Aye... cos It’s a well known ‘fact’ that the sound of great engineering is restricted to machines with four wheels...

Another one for motorbike exhausts. Drivers need to know you’re there. As long as you don’t rev the tits off them in the middle of town etc. Most bikers don’t act stupid. It’s just as the title says, it’s boy racers that are the problem, not their exhausts.

Electric cars need noise. They are a hazard particularly in car parks and built up areas.

As you pull on to the M65 from Nelson the untrained ear can often be fooled into thinking you’ve just joined the Nurbugring and a Ferrari and Lamborghini are approaching but this is followed by the disappointment in seeing a Honda and Toyota with tinted windows and oversized exhausts racing past 😀

Classic cars and well engineered cars needs leaving alone but more checks against insurance records need to be done for the racers described above.

We once had a C63 merc which pumped sound into the exhaust to make it sound beefy, which it already was. Thanks fully you could turn it on and off! It was louder than the Vantage! 🤦🏻

Italian cars (V8s and V12s) have to make lots of noise, it’s the law. I’m after buying one next year and the first thing I’ll do is change the exhaust. The second thing I’ll do is tell the insurance company and the third will be to give it a spanking and find some tunnels to blast. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.
