Compact and lightweight smartphone advice
Compact and lightweight smartphone advice
I really dislike bulky and heavy smartphones (ok for a handbag but not a trouser pocket) and am looking for something weighing less than 150g and less than 5" diagonal screen with a good camera.
To replace my Galaxy S3 mini which has been brilliant.

I think the closest you'll get is the new pixel 4a. It's not quite as small as you want but it's definitely a rare commodity now to find a small, light phone.
Edit# if you join the dark side iPhone se is 4.7"

Agree with the suggestion of IPhone se.
Excellent value, for me the best selling point is that it is guaranteed waterproof to 1m. It’s also probably the most powerful smart phone you can buy.

Bean tins and some string cheap alternative although not too practical

Can't get a 5" model, but have a look at a Mi phone. Massive Chinese firm, good as a Samsung but alot cheaper.

I have the new iPhone SE, It's basically the brains of the newest iPhone, stripped down and put into a smaller body - its an iPhone without all the gimmicks that they put on the expensive models, its robust, waterproof, great camera, fast, pocket-sized... and as far as smartphones go - affordable.

I'd have a look on gsmarena & look at the brands & the specifications especially bearing in mind the weight & screen size & whether the camera is compromised by the other preferences, you can compare phone vs phone & pick out the differences to help you choose.

Camera depends on what you consider to be good. For the most part any phone bought today will have a good camera but if you want the very best then the best compromise would be the Pixel 4a I mentioned above. Its camera is quite a bit better than the iPhone SE which uses a similar camera to the iPhone 8 a few generations back now.
But if you don't want to compromise on size, the the iPhone is the way to go. Its camera is still very good, despite not being the best available.
I personally wouldn't touch any apple product with a yardstick, but that's a personal decision based on apples (lack of) ethics.
A tip from me; watch some videos, and if safe to do so visit a phone shop so you can take a look at some models and compare sizes. Having the phone in your hand is the best way to know how you feel about it. Its not just about size, but weight and shape too. There's some small phones that when held feel like uncomfortable slates and there are bulkier phones that are lighter and grip better.
Also, modern phones tend to have really thin bezels, so what was once a 6" phone is closer to a 5" one now. The screen is almost the entire phone!
EDIT* don't rely on the plastic phone 'models' they have in the shop. Try to hold an actual specimen if you can.

Just get an iPhone se. If everyone did this the world would be a safer place.
Re: Compact and lightweight smartphone advice
Managed to find a NEW iPhone SE 2016 model (£130) - 4" screen, lightweight and extremely compact. It runs iOS 14.0.1 so the software is up to date.
A very impressive piece of technology.
The 'dark side' has recruited another disciple !
