'...Gary Megson had quickly jumped ship to join Bolton...'
sounds familiar!

Re: ARTICLE: Steve Davis – November 2007
Easy to forget how popular Steve Davis was before his desire to get 10 years ahead got the better of him. No wonder he regrets the move now, his stock has since plummeted in more ways than one.
Enjoyed his one and only game in charge though and I remember thinking if he didn't get the job at that point, he would most definitely get the job next time it became available.
On another note, I always found the departure of Dave Kevan to a then League 2 club to be an odd one.

You mention in the article that he would have been a popular appointment in 2010; was he seriously considered by the board as a permanent or even stop gap appointment?

A popular appointment then, which was 2007. I think a lot of people thought he might step up and replace Cotterill. Whether he'd have been under consideration in 2010 we'll never know, he'd gone.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 11:59 amYou mention in the article that he would have been a popular appointment in 2010; was he seriously considered by the board as a permanent or even stop gap appointment?

Just as we found Eddie Howe going back to Bournemouth strange but Notts County were Dave's club and had a real pull for him. He was also going back there to work with a mate.

Shows the change at Leicester that article. Martin Allen gone and then Gary Megson left to go to Bolton. Neither would get anywhere close to a job either us or Leicester these days.

He did an interview on that 'Turf More' programme on ClaretsPlayer. From what I remember, Davis knew he wasn't in the frame to manage in the Premier League, so with no security at Burnley FC, there was a role for him at Bolton which he took on. Understandable.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 12:03 pmA popular appointment then, which was 2007. I think a lot of people thought he might step up and replace Cotterill. I'll never forgive him to celebrating the way he did at the Reebok though.

Think they were owned by Mandaric at the time.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 12:11 pmShows the change at Leicester that article. Martin Allen gone and then Gary Megson left to go to Bolton. Neither would get anywhere close to a job either us or Leicester these days.

It's all so sad about Steve Davis.
But he brought it upon himself. Silly, silly boy.

Pretty much could have had a job for life here. And if he wanted it probably the managers job!

Wasn't he offered the manager's job when Coyle left?
I thought he was, but chose to go with Coyle instead?

He was given the caretaker role but then that went to Dobbo when Davis left. Whether he would have been offered the job, and I was told he'd have got it to the end of the season at least, we will never know for sure.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 1:20 pmWasn't he offered the manager's job when Coyle left?

From somebody who had good links in the club at the time, I was told that Davis was asked to step in whilst a replacement was arranged.
Davis asked if he was guaranteed to have a role once the new guy came in, to which he was told, that was up to whoever that was.
As "painful" as it was with him going, he was offered a job when his current one wasn't secured, which he took.

Re: ARTICLE: Steve Davis – November 2007
He would've had to totally build his coaching team from scratch because everyone went.
Coyle took everyone, including the goalkeeper coach who Jussi Jääskeläinen didn't want (so he then had two to work with at Bolton)... even the kit man went as well (who was Coyle's brother-in-law or something). The physio stayed on though.
At least Brian Laws could bring in an entire team of staff to replace everyone who left.
I don't think Davis was a realistic option for the club though
