When you say a complete balls up, if a player signs a 4 year deal and plays for 4 years but decides he wants to move on which method do you use to force him to sign anew deal ?

Wish him well now that he has joined, in his words “a massive club” - although they have been massively underachieving. Hope he does well for them (except when playing against Burnley) as when/if the crowds return could be pivotal in his Newcastle career.

Good luck to him.
I did my nut at him being played ahead of Vydra as a Number 10 when we played 4411, but he did a great job at rm allowing McNeil license to roam from LM
Cheers Jeff

Good apostrophe, well placed!tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 7:13 pmI would have preferred to retain Hedrick's services mainly for his versatility, but a 4 year contract on fairly hefty wages for a 28 year-old is a big outlay.
From Newcastle's POV, they've secured a steady experienced PL player on a free transfer, so they'll no doubt consider that as good business, which it is for them, whether Jeff will be an automatic name on their team sheet we'll have to wait and see, but given the fact Steve Bruce has been courting him since his time at Hull suggests he rates him highly, and he'll be a good fit into Newcastle's system.
Good luck Jeff you never give less than 100% when called upon, even when it wasn't in your preferred position, you always put in a shift for the team and the gaffer, and that's all fans can ask for.
P.S hope you have a couple of stinkers against the Clarets this season.

Not sure why we'd be happy with Shelvey, he showboats far to much, has only scored 8 PL goals at Newcastle and there is/was a media fixation with him for some odd reason.

Good luck to Jeff. Always rated him.
Not sure you can blame the club. We never would have given him a 4 year deal.
Not sure you can blame Jeff. He will probably have had a salary increase, lots of security with a 4 year deal and one would think a (very) hefty signing on fee.

It was a balls up and he should have been offered an extension a lot earlier than the nothing that went forward to him, now that is a balls up.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 8:06 amWhen you say a complete balls up, if a player signs a 4 year deal and plays for 4 years but decides he wants to move on which method do you use to force him to sign anew deal ?

They have got an average playerClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 5:37 pmThink that applies to any player when he signs for a new club but Newcastle have got themselves a damn good player.
In terms of managers leaving after signing new players. Back in 1974 Liverpool signed Ray Kennedy from Arsenal. It was the last thing Bill Shankly did. Less than an hour later his retirement had been announced.

Equally negative. Lose/lose for the club.
Match the 4 year contract length at Newcastle - Fans complain.
Don't match it and let Jeff move on - Fans complain.

Lots of conjecture on this thread - I know it’s a football forum and that’s par for the course but it’s the way it’s spoken as fact.
We don’t know when the club offered him a new contract or how much and we don’t know whether he has signed a “big” contract for Newcastle - we just know it’s a long one and it’s unlikely we would have offered him a 4 year one.
We’ve lost a good player but he wanted to leave and that’s what happens - hopefully we get the benefit the other way with incomings

It’s fine we will move on.
We lost Keane. No great loss we got Tarks in.
Hendrick is a decent player but he isn’t Messi. We will replace him. We haven’t struggled whilst he’s been on gardening leave
Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
What am I missing?
How are we missing him?
I trust Dyche to replace him
Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
As an attacking midfielder/supporting forward I didn’t rate Hendrick. I’m not alone in that
He’s a decent centre mid player but he isn’t as good as Cork or Westwood
He did a job on the wing but personally I think we should be aiming for better quality out wide.
I don’t think he would have been a starter every week if he had stayed

If he puts in a few anonymous performances Im certain that they will turn on him.
I will predict that he will do absolutely nothing up there and after 6 months he won’t be a regular starter.
I will bump this thread in 6 months when I’m proven correct

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Steve Bruce asked Mick McCarthy about him and this is what McCarthy told Bruce.
“Steve rang me to ask about him and whether he’d be a good signing – and I told him exactly what I’m telling you. I just said: “Yes. In a heartbeat.”
“They were my first words. I think it’s a great signing. You don’t get too many as good as Jeff on a free transfer, that’s for sure. It’s an unbelievable bargain for Newcastle and I think he’ll be great for Steve.
“He’s been doing it for Burnley for four years in the Premier League. For me he was brilliant. I think he’s a very good player, he’s athletic, he’s got a good touch, he can see a pass and he’s got a goal in him. I said to Brucey: ‘He’s all of those things and he’s 6ft 1ins, 6ft 2ins – he can defend corner kicks as well.’
“I think there’s more to come from him as well, he’s got more to offer than he’s shown so far.
“People will say Burnley this or that but they keep finishing well in the Premier League and he’s been involved in that.
“He played narrow on the right for them and what I love about that is it’s not really his position but does he moan? Does he whinge? Does he hell. He just gets on and plays.
“He does what he does, fits in and does a job. I loved him with Ireland. He was terrific for me. He scored the winner in our first game, getting into the box and he’s got an eye for goal.
“You talked about mentality up in the North East. He’s got no hang ups. He’s a proper bloke. I didn’t see any hang ups in him.
“He played international level – he played against good teams in Switzerland and Denmark and did very, very well. He was as good as anyone else on the pitch in those matches.
“We played 4-3-3 and he played centrally. He’s a nice option to have narrow on the right if you’ve got a man like Allan Saint-Maximin who wanders and does damage in the box in a freer role.
“Jeff is a very safe option in that formation because he’ll offer that back-up and I’m sure there’ll be some consideration of that.”

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
You are correct about going to an average team, but as we know it was all about the money. As well as a handsome signing on fee he will probably be earning an extra £20k per week than he was on at Burnley. Can’t see him progressing his career up there. Regarding being average, yes he was average but at the same time perhaps not appreciated for the shifts he put in for the clarets sometimes in not his preferred position. He and Chris Wood were probably the two most criticised players in the team but both effective in certain games and situations. I would be concerned if we lost a player like Westwood, however with Jeff we dust ourselves down and move on. I wish him well for the future.Volvoclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 26, 2020 4:12 pmAverage player going to an average team. Move on folks, nothing o see.

An honest opinion is only an insult to those who think the cap fits and the comment refers to them, otherwise, it is just a statement.
Mind you everyone is so precious these days so it does not take much to upset someone, somewhere because they all think that life is about them.

I don’t think he will be a regular for the majority if the season for them. That’s not to say that he won’t be a useful addition (as he was for us) but for me, he lacks the consistency and quality to command a regular starting spot, more so if that was to be in a central position.

Don't be ridiculous, it means he wanted to keep him because he can see how good a player he's been for us in the last four seasons. Why do you think Bruce was so keen to get him?

Who I would think, along with Sean Dyche, Mick McCarthy and Chris Powell, who heaped praise on Hendrick, know considerably more than you about football and the contribution Hendrick can give to a team.
