May I be the first to say good luck to him, except when he's playing us of course.
I wish he'd stayed but onwards and upwards.

Good luck to him
His goal we Everton after 20+ passes was the highlight of a career that promised much but at times he flattered to deceive

Would never have got a 4 year deal here, so quite understandable why he moved.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
I wanted him to stay. I dread to think how much we’d have to spend to bring in a player of his ilk.
Hopefully JBG will stay fit out in the right and Josh will continue how he has started so let’s see what happens.
Since he was ‘retired’ from that forward role, he has been a very steady player for us out on the right or more inside.
Wish him luck, except for the obvious.

They gave Alan Pardew a 10 year deal and have only just stopped paying him.Perhaps they might try to get Gibson off his backside by throwing some of Mike's money at him on a very long term contract.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Good signing for Newcastle. And we will miss his versatility and his work ethic. But even though he has left for nothing, I cant see how we would offer a 4 year deal and guaranteed starts. Both of which I imagine he would have wanted to have stayed.
Better to cut our losses in that sense and look to improve with younger and better. Brownhill looks just that so we just need backup for Brownhill now.
Looks like a good move for all parties. Even at 'Just' £40k a week he would have cost us close to another £10m without a signing on fee. And during the current climate its a lot for a player who isnt likely to be first choice and we have just forked out on Brownhill.
We do need another body at least in there though. Hope we go younger.

Shows the level of their ambition if this is one of their key signings...and if it isn't a good indication of their ambitions, he'll struggle to make an impact imo.

When we signed him it looked for a while as if we were going to miss out to Hull. Although he left at the end of July, Steve Bruce was the manager who initially tried to set up the deal. He’s said today that he’s got him four years later because Hull couldn’t afford him then.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Think that applies to any player when he signs for a new club but Newcastle have got themselves a damn good player.
In terms of managers leaving after signing new players. Back in 1974 Liverpool signed Ray Kennedy from Arsenal. It was the last thing Bill Shankly did. Less than an hour later his retirement had been announced.

Best wishes to Jeff Hendrick one of my favourite Burnley players.
Sean Dyche obviously thought he was a top player in our system and if SD thinks that it is good enough for me
Will cost us £ 10 million to replace.
Newcastle have got themselves a bargain.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Absoloute apathy. Was good when he slotted in as a cover right midfielder. Never did enough centrally which was his natural position and where he was purchased to play.
We are at a time when we need to refresh the squad and the move suits both parties especially considering we should and probably have been looking to sign a new right midfielder this window regardless of the job Jeff did there or not.
Coupled with Brownhill's cameos on the right and not looking out of place I'm not sure Jeff would have actually been in the plans much next season other than as a cover for cork/westwood/brownhill in the centre or behind the right wing spots (hopefully including new).
I'd also be hoping a new younger centre mid option might come in this window (Gallagher?) which again would put him a further slot behind in the pecking order.
If nothing else I hope Jeff leaving has forced the chairman's hand into a few new signings, that would be one of the best contributions he's made for us, apart from the Everton goal
Goodbye Jeff.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
I would have preferred to retain Hedrick's services mainly for his versatility, but a 4 year contract on fairly hefty wages for a 28 year-old is a big outlay.
From Newcastle's POV, they've secured a steady experienced PL player on a free transfer, so they'll no doubt consider that as good business, which it is for them, whether Jeff will be an automatic name on their team sheet we'll have to wait and see, but given the fact Steve Bruce has been courting him since his time at Hull suggests he rates him highly, and he'll be a good fit into Newcastle's system.
Good luck Jeff you never give less than 100% when called upon, even when it wasn't in your preferred position, you always put in a shift for the team and the gaffer, and that's all fans can ask for.
P.S hope you have a couple of stinkers against the Clarets this season.

Good luck to him, that's a great contract he's got himself. I can't see him playing as much football as he has with us though.

Well it looks like AC Milan are still shopping in Burnley and didn’t waste any time snapping up a couple of alternatives.

So you consider it to be no great loss to lose the player who has played more games for us than anyone but the two centre halves in what have been our best four years in a long, long time.

He played so many games because of his versatility. Good on his day but so often a steady, 6/10 player that we have already improved on in Brownhill.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 8:54 pmSo you consider it to be no great loss to lose the player who has played more games for us than anyone but the two centre halves in what have been our best four years in a long, long time.

Good luck to him, never let us down BUT if Brownhill can chip in with a few goals I think he will be a better player for us, quicker feet and looks forward much more than Jeff - that's no detriment to Hendrick, just an observation on what I've seen.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Is steady a bad thing, give me a steady 6/10 pro every week, over some of the 1 brilliant game in 10 types, and whether we've improved on him with Brownhill is still too be seen, Josh has started OK, but he's still got a lot to prove at this level, maybe he will show he's an upgrade on Hendrick, but Jeff his been a key member of our last 4 successive PL campaigns, and Dyche wanted to keep him, so he must know more about Jeff than we do, he'll see the players day in day out.
And do we even know yet that Brownhill is a direct replacement for Hendrick, or will he slot into cm.
Either way I'd rather we had kept someone who has over a 100 games under his belt at this level, and who would have proved an invaluable squad member over the course of the season, however he's chosen to seek pastures new, so we say thanks for your memories, and we move on.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
This is not a criticism of Brownhill in any way because it must have been unbelievably difficult for him coming into the team in the circumstances he did. He started really well but by the time we got to the end of that nine game run he was offering very little. As I said, not a criticism but time will tell whether we’ve improved on Hendrick or not.
Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Have to disagree he's a Cm playing out on the wing. Jeff very rarely impacted games going forward at all compared to what we have seen from brownhill.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 9:54 pmThis is not a criticism of Brownhill in any way because it must have been unbelievably difficult for him coming into the team in the circumstances he did. Whether he has or he hasn’t, it’s been widely acknowledged & recognised the JB signing was unrelated & not a like for like replacement for JH so the comparisons don’t make much sense, had JH stopped on JB would have still been arriving, JB was never a replacement for JH despite the positional midfield similarity.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 9:54 pmThis is not a criticism of Brownhill in any way because it must have been unbelievably difficult for him coming into the team in the circumstances he did. Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Thoughts can be summarised as:
Good, hard working professional that gave his all while he was here and I wish we’d kept. Was never likely to displace Westwood or Cork in the middle and we need more going forward than he offered on the right. Wish him all the very best at Newcastle and look forward to the opportunities his departure will create in the team.

He’s a good player for a team like us and Newcastle. Let’s face it, if it was the other way round and Shelvey came here to play alongside Hendrick, we’d be pretty happy.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
I am not really sad to see him go, and felt the same with Arfield going. Newcastle have done a good deal getting a decent player without having to pay a transfer fee: it will be interesting to see how many games he starts for the Magpies. My big concern is that we are short of cover generally in midfield, an area where in my opinion we need to improve: the board and the executive team need to back Dyche in the next couple of weeks otherwise we could be starting the new season, in these difficult times, with an under strength squad, which could prove to be a major problem.

Brownhill looked excellent to me. Energy. Desire. Quick feet. And played a key role in our great end of season form including crucial play in some of our goals.
Not one player deserves singling out for poor performances from our post lockdown games. Particularly given the results, how many games we played and how many key players we lost.
Least of all brownhill who in his first starts in the premier league let nobody down.
Strange for him to be singled out.

Just hope this messageboard doesn't become as fixated on JH as they are with Leeds Utd
Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick becomes a Magpie
Brownhill is a different type of player to Hendrick. You yourself have said he wasn't brought in to replace Hendrick. Brownhill came in under difficult circumstances and probably ran himself into the ground with the depleted squad and work rate.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 9:54 pmThis is not a criticism of Brownhill in any way because it must have been unbelievably difficult for him coming into the team in the circumstances he did. We'll get a better idea of how effective Brownhill is if/when we conclude our transfer business. We clearly need replacements for Hendrick and Lennon if only to make up the numbers in the latter case.
I personally think Hendrick was more effective in right midfield than Brownhill has been but he wasn't brought in to play right midfield. I like Brownhill in a central position with his quicker feet and football brain. He is a little different to Cork and Westwood for me.
I wish Jeff well and hope we can find a replacement or two for the right hand side and centrally.

This is a really good point. It was sad to see Arfield and Boyd go but we really needed to improve on them as we had come so far since signing them. It's the same with Hendrick - we now need to sign an actual right winger and use this opportunity to improve on what we had. If we can't then you have to seriously question our scouting network and the whole way we go about signing players, which seems to prohibit us signing anyone outside the UK and RoI.NewClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 10:46 pmThoughts can be summarised as:

Jeff saw himself as a CM, not a RM. Westwood, Cork and Brownhill are better players than him there.
