Tony you have put Jason Shancho instead of Sancho on the article.
Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
Is Maguire in because he is more attack minded, adds punch to the midfield and his aerial assaults cause havoc to people defending ?
Who knows it's all Greek to me.

We beat the footballing giants Tunisia and Panama in the group stages, needed penalties to get past Columbia and beat Sweden 2-0 in the quarters. Hardly the hardest opponents! Each game against a decent side we were beaten. I consider Southgate to have had a very kind draw at the World Cup

Think Southgate needs to pick players on ability and not for what club they represent. What's Phillips done to warrant a call up? The midfield looks very weak and inexperienced for me and Mings, Gomez and Dier in front of Tarks, I find it hard to understand.

Well done Nick but an absolute joke that Eric Dier and Tyrone Mings get in ahead of Tarkowski.
Time for the goofy one to go.

Southgate will also keep picking younger players from the so called bigger clubs, because it keeps the bigger clubs' fans happy and it always gives him the 'jam tomorrow' excuse that it's a young team and 'work in progress', which can improve with time.

It's okay, plenty of time and games left before the cup for the usual suspects to make even more mistakes.
Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
3 right backs so assuming Walker has edged in ahead of Tarkowski as a centre back as well.
I try to remain non-bias, but hard to say that Southgate doesn’t hold some big club favour when Dier is chosen ahead of Tarks.
Well deserved on Pope.
Taylor not ready yet but another repeat season who knows.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
Southgate just joins all past managers in towing the FA party line. It's about money and who's face fits. Nothing to do with ability or form. Twas ever thus.
Brian Clough was the best manager England never had and that was because he was outspoken and wouldn't give two figs what the FA said or thought. They couldn't have that and wont have that.
Before anyone goes on and says 'But Peter Taylor!' I am aware of the partnership but I think Clough would have been a far bigger success than any before or since because he picked players based on ability, not celebrity.

I've backed the majority of Southgate's decision up to now, but leaving out Tarkowski has left me pretty much lost for words. I can only presume that he didn't like what he saw when called up - be that his pace or athleticism. I could understand Mings being selected in his place but Eric Dier, really?

Well done to Nick although he won’t be No 1.
Nice to see Ings and Tripps in there as well.
England have been crap for 50 years, so no real surprise that Southgate continues the trend.

I reckon he must go on whoscored and sort by pass completion stats to select his defenders.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 5:06 pmI've backed the majority of Southgate's decision up to now, but leaving out Tarkowski has left me pretty much lost for words. Maybe Tarks omission is only a shock to our support, maybe we overrate him, maybe Southgate is right not to pick him,he should be in in place of fathead Harry,go around snotting & bribing people and you play for the biggest club in the country it seems hes undropable

Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
Maybe the manager thinks that we are a bit like Man City and Barcelona/Real Madrid in that we don’t actually need any defenders who can defend... just midfielders with a bit of pace to carry the ball forward because we rarely will have to defend.
We (Burnley) set up to defend. Every single game we play showcases our defenders for the quality they are, so I can only assume the modern international game has no place for defenders. The selection of Tyrone mings would support that argument.
Delighted for Nick, but i fancy he will need to take a cushion...

Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
It’s a joke that Tarkowski isn’t in. I hoped Southgate would be a manager that was able to look beyond playing for a big club. It’s like that’s the only way a player’s ability can be validated. A good manager should have good judgement to see past that. If you can’t you may as well just let the league table pick your team.
Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
It's more likely to be about pass completion, which seems to be missing from wilks' stats.
Seriously, Southgate has made it quite clear that he wants his defenders to be able to play it out from the back so it's understandable why he doesn't pick Tarks. Stupid, but understandable.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
As he should be. Beggars can't be choosers and England aren't in a position to overlook a talented ball-playing defensive midfielder just because he's been playing in the championship. We're crying out for a Carrick-style player who can sit deep and set the tempo.

For a bloke who's meant to be a defender, it would appear Mings doesn't do a lot of it based on those stats.

I agree that Tarkowski is worth a look, but I think unless he moves on and performs for a so called "bigger" club Southgate just isn't going to pick him. Personally I think its stranger not at least having a look at Charlie Taylor when there's no other left backs there.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 3:23 pmNot just Tarkowski missing though is it? It's a pity that when Tarks played for England he didn't do particularly well. i don't think a change of club would necessarily help him to get back in the national squad.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope named in England squad
That's true England did reach the last 4 at the WC, but most football connoisseurs know that going that deep was flattering to Southgate and the squad,
let's see how far England progress at the next Euro's when there'll be no easy games to navigate, and despite reaching the semis it was still a big opportunity missed by England, given the fact that many of the favourites fell by the wayside, that's unlikely to be the case next year, and the pressure will be on England to at least match their 2018 showing.
And if England hadn't survived that penalty shoot out with Colombia Gareth could well have been shown the door, the sticking block to England winning tournaments is the midfield, defence and keeper, up front there's a goal threat, but you just can't see England being tight enough at the back in the latter stages of tournaments to proceed past the better teams, when push comes to shove.

Come on. You don’t think a player plays as many games for club and country because his grandad was once part of the FA?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 3:12 pmNo but his granddad used to be in charge of the FA so he got a good start.
A manager like pochetino and mourinho would never entertain that.
Dier is a decent if unassuming player.
