ARTICLE: Owen Coyle – November 2007 to January 2010

It's that time, when the managers feature reaches the man who replaced Cotterill. I think everyone knows what I think of this man but I hope you think I've been fair with this article.

What a manager he was for us. Some of the absolute best times as a claret.

His success was all the more remarkable as he’s been pretty useless everywhere he’s been since with the exception of Rovers.

If he’d used some common sense he could have still left in a semi decent way. Shame really.

Very fair review - Coyle took us to the Promised Land (something I never expected to see) but his leaving was a disgrace. I think most managers usually have one special time / job and Burnley was definitely his.

I thought Gray was only sold to keep us out of admin due to ITV digital collapse, but now I know it was because of his relationship with Coyle

Fair report, at least you gave him some praise for his attractive football

I'm fairly confident that we wouldn't be where we are now without that first season in the Premier League. Granted, we were almost back at square one 2 seasons later but without that injection of cash in 09 I think we would have been much further back than square one so to speak.

It does make me smile though, that over 10 years on, the club that has stuck to its morals, its often frustrating financial policies and living within its means is the team that has progressed to one of the top 10 teams in the country in 2 out of the last 3 seasons. Meanwhile, the greedy individual who threw everything at a quick win and let his morals fly out of the window has slowly faded out of football altogether. I'm sure that there is a valuable life lesson in there somewhere.

Fair review. Hard to make any sort of level headed assessment on that 2008/9 season, it was absolutely nuts.

As for Coyle, I got it all of my chest when we beat them in the League Cup a year or two afterwards. By the time we beat them again in the Championship he was more a figure of fun than anything.

I loved Coyle.....but eventually came to despise him, which obscure league is he managing in these days or does he just spend his time at home getting under his wifes feet pondering what could have been if he had been a better man!

For everything that happened the pre match at Bolton (not the game itself as it was dire) and the league cup tie when he first came back were brilliant entertainment.

I'm always more likely to give praise to managers who moved the club forwards significantly (Mullen, Ternent, Coyle and Dycne) than those who did nothing of note (Cotterill, Howe, Heath) or those who took the club backwards (Waddle, Laws, Possibly Howe), no matter what circumstances they left the club.

Coyle promotion season, definitely top 2 most enjoyable in my time watching Burnley.

Still the only manager to have left a promoted club for another prem team during the season.

When he signed i was uneasy because he left st johnstone the week before they were in a cup final. I pushed that aside as we did so well.

I will always remember my dad saying why would he leave Burnley for Bolton and tarnish his reputation.

He will still be talked about in years to come, possibly more so then those of us who remember Bond.
I saw a side to his character that I found uncomfortable after promotion when he played us off against Celtic for more money took some of the shine off t. I think when he left Tony Livesey said something along the lines of we made him a millionaire and this is how he repaid us.

What a great appointment and time to be a claret.

I put money on Reid as had heard it was a certainty. And couldnt believe he didnt get it. But despite his success at that level with Sunderland it was such a good job he didnt get it.

Since Coyle we have continued to recruit in a similar way in the main. (And even prior to that with Cotterill). And that is the way we should continue to recruit.

If Dyche ever leaves, looking to replace him with a has been who doesnt have the drive or ambition isnt where we should go. I always used to think if Dyche went we should look at Allerdyce.

But really what we should do is look to someone young, hungry, relatively succesful but with huge ambition. We did that With Cotterill, Coyle, Dyche and Howe and it worked.

As for Coyles signings - Some brilliant ones there. Thompson being the most understated and unsung of the lot. But Paterson and Eagles were great signings too.

**** how it ended. But it all worked alright for us in the end. Hes served his time and I would welcome him back now.

I share the sentiments of the article. He gave me something I never thought I’d have... Burnley back in the top flight. I sat in Wembley in a haze. Pinching myself to see if it was real. Add that to nearly getting to the League Cup final and the win against Utd at home. They were amazing times.

It was built on an image of wholesome loyalty which we, the team and all of us just bought into... so it worked. However he was simply a liar. Once exposed no one believed him ever again. So his BS just was heard as BS. If ever someone threw away a good thing it was him.

revealed the number one target by formally requesting permission of Sheffield Wednesday to interview their boss Brian Laws, the former Burnley right back. Permission was refused

What a sliding doors moment that was. Who knows where the club would have ended up if they had granted permission, administration would be my guess.

Played some excellent open football under him
The first half at Spurs in the League Cup semi was as good as anything (if only the header from Robbie Blake had grazed the inside instead of outside of the post). Second leg was even better but still blame him for bringing Ade on towards the end when he couldn't hold up the ball :)
The other thing that stood out (in man management terms) for me was when we were at Wembley for the play off final and he had every single member of the squad (not just subs) stripped and out on the pitch during the warm up to enjoy the atmosphere of the fans
Lets not forget also that he felt let down by the Board during that Jan window when he had worked on getting Wiltshere, Holden and Weiss all in on loan but did not get the financial backing at the time. That was the start of the trouble that led him to Bolton where he signed all three within his first week to help them stay up
Have to strongly agree that since then he has made a very good living out of talking bull but not producing anything

A brilliant manager for a short space of time. A really inspiring figure to the fans, a squad of largely journeymen Championship players and to individual players at the right times - the number of goals we had off the bench in the promotion season was astonishing and I always felt it was because he sent players on in the right mood to make a difference.

As others have said he came in at a time when I assumed I would never see Burnley in the top flight and he made it happen. Some incredible memories, Chelsea in the cup, the unbelievable semi-final with Spurs, the incredible play-off run where we didn't concede. What will always stand out to me I think is waking up on the morning of the play-off final totally confident we were going to win.

Sad how it all ended, I was furious at the time but looking back now I think we were headed down and I don't think it was in his skillset to turn our fortunes around that season nor to motivate a relegated squad to a subsequent promotion. Since then he's obviously faltered, I think the thrashing Bolton had against Stoke in the FA Cup was the end of him. Once nobody believed in him he'd lost his biggest ability, to inspire.

One thing I'll always wonder is how Diego Penny and Remco van der Schaaf came to be signed and even more mysteriously how they both made the team for the opening day of the season.

I’m definitely very torn about Coyle. On the one hand, he gave me possibly one of the best days of my life with the win at Wembley, the look on my dads face at the final whistle was amazing, he never thought he’d see us back in the top flight. The Carling Cup Run was amazing, and some of the football we played was so exciting.
However I was absolutely furious when he left, was one of those at The Reebok only a month later with my Susan Boyle mask on chanting abuse, however I was only 19 or so then, and as time has gone on my opinion of him has mellowed somewhat.
I still maintain had he stayed we would have stayed on the league that season but gone down the year after. I was listening to a podcast with Clarke Carlisle recently where he said that the team spirit at that time was like nothing he had experienced before, but so was the unprofessionalism in terms of training/diet etc.
Coyle quite clearly is a short term manager, as his career since us has proven.

I think the same, I am sure he would have dredged those extra 6 points out from somewhere and that is why he gets the flak if he had gone at end of season with us down fair enough but he left us and took his staff with him at the probably the worst time and left us with Laws somehow trying to get the best out of a team shot on confidence.

Thanks for the report CT, was a good read and an interesting insight to some things a few of us may never know.

But also thank you Owen Coyle, you made my childhood dreams come true in a remarkable season where many a memory was made. Some of the stories of that season are still discussed regularly.
After a few angry years towards him, the past is just that now.

So thank you Owen.

Fact about feeling let down. No excuse however. I knew Owen and tried to explain that Bolton’s financial position was precarious and the end was nigh. One thing Owen wasn’t was a financial man. !!! He was a street fighter from Glasgow. The money he was about to earn at Bolton went to his head.
As for Andy Gray , that had nothing to do with Owen. Ask Barry Kilty about that story and what he thinks of Gray.

I was going to make the point that our manager has been making v similar comments regarding our finances recently...

And anyway, we do need to give a monkeys about Coyle, whether you like it or not. He’s part of our history, he took us to the Premier League, we’ll be talking about it in 50 years time.

Owen Coyle was like that dream girlfriend.

An amazing two years and still not over it 10 years on.

If it was just an average girl you wouldn't be bothered in the slightest a month on.

Yep but the saddest thing is. Having met some else, married 8 years, with even more amazing memories along the way and it’s still going pretty strong. Yet still bitter about what happened with the one before.

It’s amazingly stupid and pathetic the way people still hold some kind of grudge with a man who tried bettering himself.
