Southgate replaces Maguire
He’s called up Conor Coady (Wolves) and also Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal).
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Bizarre selection but typical of Southgate.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
I like Coady but I think what has happened in the last week must suggest that Tarky has no international future.

Hahahahahaha. What a fraud Southgate is.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
When I read the thread title I thought he'd come out of retirement and selected himself over Tarkowski.

Southgate will be gone soon... he’s not the man to trust with such a talented generation we’ve got coming through.

Could it be to do with our style of play? Coady plays in a back 3, as do most of his CB choices (I think).ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 8:10 pmI like Coady but I think what has happened in the last week must suggest that Tarky has no international future.

It’s clearly that but strange that he had him on standby for the World Cup.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 8:16 pmCould it be to do with our style of play? Coady plays in a back 3, as do most of his CB choices (I think).
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Coady and Tarky should’ve been in from the start. Dier and Mings should be nowhere near. As already said, Tarky clearly has no future at that level under Southgate.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Southgate is clueless he will probably select Pitchfork or Henderson instead on English No1 Nick
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Is Tarks injured and the club just haven't announced it? I haven't seen him in any of the training videos.
Bizarre decision by Southgate if not.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
I've been Southgate out since the day he got the job so my opinion has nothing to do with him not calling up our players. He'd done nothing in his managerial career to warrant getting the job. FA and big club yes man, I look forward to the day he gets replaced

If Tarks got a transfer to one of the so called top six clubs he'd soon get a call up no matter what system that club played.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
I've seen all the usual comments saying "it's big club bias", or it's because he plays for us and we don't play *ahem* Football™ but I think we can just come to the conclusion that's he's just not that good. I think he's trying too hard to evolve us into a team that plays a style of football that despite looking great against Panama etc, isn't all that great when Belgium turn up.
If only Fat Sam didn't bugger it up. Not everyone's favourite but I think he would have at least given us a team that plays to it's strengths.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Tarkowski is a top centre half. I can only think he has made this decision based on his underwhelming performances on previous England games and perhaps what he’s seen in training.
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
The only possible explanation for his omission is that Southgate is under the impression that Tarkowski is eligible for the Polish national team and not the English one.

Southgate makes these decisions to remind everyone he always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. Absolute smug and pomp and just so full of himself. He is so easy to dislike and root against.

I suppose this playing out from the back philosophy has gone even further since then.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 8:18 pmIt’s clearly that but strange that he had him on standby for the World Cup.
I don't think too many modern CBs have to win lots of aerial duels.
In the same way i seriously doubt that Nick Pope will ever get picked as first choice for England; catching crosses is not a pre-requisite of the modern international goalkeeper.
I still think the are brilliant, though!

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
It's drivel though because Tarky can play football. Southgate has seen him enough. You still have to be able to defend anyway.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 9:36 pmI suppose this playing out from the back philosophy has gone even further since then.

Fair enough that Coady gets called up, but some of the ones already picked are the real head scratchers.
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
That's why Man City under Guardiola struggle against the best teams in Europe because he has defenders who can't defend and a goalkeeper who isn't that good at stopping shots.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 9:36 pmI suppose this playing out from the back philosophy has gone even further since then.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Since Guardiola took charge they haven't got past the quarter finals in the CL.
Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Why can’t people wrap their head around the fact that Southgate wants his CH to play a certain way. He picks players that play that way at club level. He doesn’t want to play a defender who has his RB and 2 CMs within 10 yards of him 95% of the game. Different CH play a different way. Whys that so hard to understand? If we wanted a target man and bought Brewster to do it, everyone would understand that doesn’t work. So why is it people can’t fathom CH are not all the same?

i'm not defending it, but the fact is Southgate is looking at a different kind of defender.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 10:18 pmIt's drivel though because Tarky can play football. Southgate has seen him enough. You still have to be able to defend anyway.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
But they've gone out to Monaco, Spurs, Liverpool and Lyon in that time, three of which they've also beaten since Guardiola took over.
They also have wins against Barca, Napoli and Real in that time, so I don't think you can say they struggle against the best teams in Europe.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Lyon, Spurs, Liverpool, Monaco are the teams who've knocked City out in the Champs league Q/Finals.
They've won 2 out of those 7 games, scored 12 and conceded 18.
For whatever reason it is they freeze in the QF's.
They've got experienced players, some of the best in the world and one of the best managers in the world but he just can't seem to get the job done.

Anyone who even suggests Mee for England needs to watch that *disallowed Bournemouth goal on break last season. The way Wilson pit him on his arse and had him crawling was hilarious.
*Only disallowed after a VAR check, play very much live when this happened.

We are wondering why he hasn't picked Tarky, not the whole Burnley back 4. At least half of the centre backs picked play in a back 4 anyway.
Tarky is such a different centre back to Keane, Coady, Mings and Dier? Drivel.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
If england play the way southgate wants england to play in the euros we certainly won’t win it. Southgate wants to play a way that beats the minnows in qualifiers but playing that way against the good sides with the players he has selected is going to end in coming home early. Again.

Southgate is a gawky bucktoothed rent boy, and little more than a nodding dog for a third rate FA.
With his wobbly adams apple and manic wonky grin he looks for all the world like a product of incest from the Munster family.

Re: Southgate replaces Maguire
Not all CH are the same though are they? Like strikers. If southgate needed a target man to play one up top he won’t pick Ings.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 11:11 pmI've no idea what you're going on about.

If he wants a ball playing CH who plays in a pretty open team in the PL then why would he pick Tark? It’s not like he hasn’t picked him in the past anyway. He’s obviously seen enough of him on the training pitch to know he’s not up to it. Pointless wettkng yourself over it, is it?
