Our biggest waste of money signing
Our biggest waste of money signing
Relative to where we were ... Gibson, Walters, Reid, Van Der Shaaf , Tony Hancock or other ? This isn’t whether it was a good idea to sign them but about how much money we wasted compared to what they offered.
For me 1. Gibson 2. Walters 3. T Hancock

It's hard to believe that he was once our record signing!

Anyone know what Drinkwater cost us?
Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
Forgot about Drinkwater. He has to be in the top 3 I think. Offered the square root of f all.

Why Walters? Got him for peanuts from Stoke. Unfortunately he suffered bad injuries that brought his career to an end but you can never factor that in.

Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
With Tony Hancock, at least we got our money back, £50,000 to Preston when he promptly got injured and never played a game for them. Paul Stewart was only a month's loan, I think, and we now know of his horrific " back story " . Both Liam Robinson and Ian Moore were for the most part triers, who were often played in roles that didn't suit them, in teams that were struggling eg: Robinson up front with little support ....
Gibson wins this hands down ....

I believe we didn’t get a penny from Preston for him despite what was reported.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:35 pmWith Tony Hancock, at least we got our money back, £50,000 to Preston when he promptly got injured and never played a game for them. I’d rule Stewart out, I don’t think he cost us anything. Didn’t Liverpool pay his wages because we said we would give him games to get him fit?

Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
I can't rule him out - he was abysmally unconcerned. He epitomised everything that was heartbreaking about that time. Even if if we spent £nil on his transfer and gave him a game it would have been a rip off. I would have paid £20 a week to play and been more committed.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:48 pmI’d rule Stewart out, I don’t think he cost us anything. Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
I’d agree he was awful but he doesn’t fit into the thread title. I couldn’t believe how poor such a good player looked but he clearly wasn’t fit enough to be playing.Guller Bull wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:57 pmI can't rule him out - he was abysmally unconcerned. Gibson. Dyche said 'He's gone back to his club'. No wonder he's crap for Burnley, he's hated them all his life.
Moral of the story, don't sign someone who has a 'home club'.

8 million transfer fee
6 million wages
51 league appearances
274k per appearance
Step forward, if you can manage it without injuring yourself, Steven Defour.

Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
Reported we were paying around half of his £110k a week wages at Chelsea.
Also reported that Villa were paying all of the £110k !!

Not that I agree with your logic but surely Brady at £13 mill and 62 appearances offers lower value for money,
Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
Yep 4 year contract on a decent wage and was it a half a million transfer fee to United ?
Ended up doing ok for Toronto apparently - which at the time was probably near league 2 level.
Another of those many transfers where Sir Alex managed to get decent money for crap players purely because they had been at United and played one League Cup game !! He was a master at it.

I can't look further than Ian Moore or Leon Cort.
Our first million pound signing that was no better than Payton or even Branch.
As for Cort. He was that slow he rivalled that Northampton defender in 92.

I was so dismayed by Robinson I actually wrote to him care of the club, saying if he stayed on his feet he might make a half decent player. Funnily enough he never replied.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 8:23 pmLiam Robinson. It's hard to believe that he was once our record signing!

You can’t make a list like that without including the Duke. Sordell and Hennings were hardly given a chance whereas Jukiewicz had at least half a season to try and hit a barn door. He didn’t even get near.

We might view him differently if he'd been played. How could he have not been better than Waddle's central defence?huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:19 pmMarco Gentile. Just to throw another name in the ring.

Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
Well, you pretty much can factor that in when the player is almost 34 with over 500 appearances on the clock. There's always an increased risk of that happening.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:14 pmWhy Walters? Got him for peanuts from Stoke. In terms of transfer fee, wages and contribution to the team, I can't see a bigger waste of money than Gibson.
Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
I can’t believe you’ve put Tommy Hutchinson there. Gerry Gow -yes Hutchinson - no way. He put in a shift in a dreadful side.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 4:33 amJohn Bond, and everyone he brought with him, especially Steve Daley . With the exceptions of Denis Tueart & Tommy Hutchinson.
Financially has to be Gibson.
In terms of disappointment then Coyle’s three ‘E’s take some beating.
I’d also say Besart Berisha deserves a mention. Never really offered a chance but there was an ok player in there somewhere.

Re: Our biggest waste of money signing
True. The story I heard was he was on £4k per appearance and the board wouldn’t pay that but strange if true as somebody signed off on the deal.
