I've waited a long time for this, but still a long way to go
Below is a link to NuSCale, which is a SMR (Small Nuclear Reactor), which I invested a little bit of money in over a decade ago because I believed it was a thing of the future, this major milestone announcement means a step closer to seeing it actually in operation, but a major step indeed.

Kate, I can improve their website, and with over 2.7 million social followers could maybe... maybe, help promote it.
Although I would first need to understand what the hell it's all about.

Think of of it a nuclear reactor in a box, you dig a hole in the ground and put some water in it then drop the reactor in and hook it up with a few wires and you have nice clean safe power unlike any nuclear facility of today. You can scale it up by digging a few holes and adding more wires.
Of course that is the million mile overview in order to try and simplify for you, I think it will be a game changer to the power industry but obviously they need to dig the first hole and drop one in with some wires and prove it yet.
However, with you only being 40, when you hit 60 and there are a few around you will be able to say, that bloody Kate told me about these things when nobody (almost nobody) had heard of them.

I thought Rolls Royce had designed one of these, about the size of a house and that was its future business. I saw it online.

quite a few I know had the similar idea and for over a decade I have watched them go by the wayside one by one, the theory is well known, but proving the safety case and getting the approval to build one, as you can imagine, is the stumbling block. This should go a long way to actually building/proving one out,, prototypes always take a long time, obviously being nuclear means a lot more scrutiny than many other things.

Maybe Rolls Royce has a future at Barlick after all. I'll be praying for a small scale nuclear explosion to take the place out and everyone in it and save Earby for later.

same concept but they are way behind from what I can see in a cursory look:Pstotto wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:16 pmhttps://www.rolls-royce.com/products-an ... ctors.aspx#/

2017 Mature design developed
2023 Planned achievement of regulatory Design Acceptance Confirmation (DAC) and Statement of Design Acceptability (SoDA)
2030 Planned first of a kind commercial operation
Yet it shows the concept is not way out in left field but is believed to be the future.

I actually had the opportunity to invest in bitcoins a few years ago before Joe Bloggs knew anything about it, and probably wasted only a few million USD.... I know.KateR wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:06 pmYou have over 2.7 million followers, wow, now I am impressed!!

I still swear a bit as I know I should have done something. Nobody knew what crypto was.

If they have nuclear warships then a home nuclear system perhaps the size of a bread bin might be further on in time. The nuclear aspect would have to be in a sealed unit of some sort.
Lithium mobile phone battery size in 100years or less.

hubby is always telling me about the things from Star Trek that came true, flip phones, etc, so SMR and warp speed might go hand in hand, replace electric cars for example.
Nuclear warships is a rally good example of what is possible though.

I think the huge problem with this is the ability to scale it and weaponise it. There’s no way this is going to fly.
How we consume energy is changing so fast and so much that we won’t need the current output soon. Renewables will suffice!

Kate, when you are a billionaire will you invest in the Clarets ?
The concept looks and sounds amazing. Clean cheap energy, science is wonderful.

The future is in batteries, lithium or whatever, charging them is not a prob with sun, wind and tide freely available.

They say the population of Italy is set to shrink to only 21 million by 2100. We might all be dead in 10 years with a new virus from China.
Ktichkris, rivers too. Riverbanks could be energy banks with micro-watermills lining the route.

If you put a pressure pad on the river floor, tons of pressure non-stop to gain some yield.

Hydro-electric damns massive engineering, the river watermill is still 18th C.
If a fisherman had a portable tambourine-type object with wheels on a line in the stream it could power a tent light as an example of micro-portable development for the future.
A weighted sheet on the bottom of the river could gain pressure electricity, tyres on cars, footwear, pavements etc.
Heat from car brakes too.

what bit I invested wont make me a million let alone a billion, the only point I was trying to make was I did and still do believe in this as being part of the future, it's not going to replace everything but it's a step in the right direction.

Fair point. It's the best way to gain confidence, by investing small amounts and seeing how it goes.

One small step for Kate, one giant leap for mankind.
Re: I've waited a long time for this, but still a long way to go
it is the only way when you only have a little, but given you probably wont see the first commercial plant until late 2020's at the earliest, they say 2027, they don't have anything in terms of profits really.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 11:11 pmFair point. I had (foolishly now) expected to have seen one up and running by now but alas.....

I'm involved with a few cryptos but no guarantees with which one.
Re: I've waited a long time for this, but still a long way to go
it has potential, the share prices has dropped dramatically over the last 5 years in the main owner who are Fluor Corporation until today, NuScale would if they start actually providing electricity and running provide a real boost, but as I said that is 10 years away. I will be lucky to recovery what we have in but as I said it is something I believe in and a really long term investment.
I know nothing about investing in crypto type companies.

In August 2013, NuScale announced that Rolls-Royce had joined Fluor Corporation in backing NuScale’s bid to commercialize small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology globally. The addition of Rolls-Royce’s world class manufacturing capability brought a wealth of experience in the development, production, and maintenance of advanced nuclear technologies across global markets.
Re: I've waited a long time for this, but still a long way to go
If there's a skilled workforce in Barlick, it's up to them to invent their own product according to their collective expertise, know-how and experience regarding new or old technologies and their manufacture.
I'm sure folk of that cleverness and mind-set must have some creative interest driving them to that level.
Instead of a Spitfire on a stand for working 40 years there, perhaps RR could give the factory and a bit of investment to give thanks to the highly trained and hours worked-for professional status of their employees and also with respect to the town itself.
If there is closure that's fitting respect.
I can't see how they could argue against it.
If Mercedes Formula 1 can do it for the NHS...
It was a war-time development in Barlick and now it reached the endgame maybe.

Fair play Kate for having the balls to stump up cash and invest in something so innovative. It takes forward thinkers to move forward
Personally I think it’s a good idea
However, i don’t like the fact next door have a large dog. I’m not sure how I’d feel if they put a nuclear reactor in the garden

Re: I've waited a long time for this, but still a long way to go
NIMBY is a very real fear for many regarding numerous things, while they are small I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding having one in the next door garden, of course I could be very wrong in assuming the size of the garden next door to you!
Fair play Kate for having the balls to stump up cash and invest in something so innovative. mmm I will think about that one! but again the investment was small, let's say tiny and get it out of the way, I think it will be part of the future as we know it.
Regarding RR, it looks like they thought about NuScale but then went later with the UKSMR as linked, I also noticed no major European countries including the UK were on the the list of agreed projects in the NuScale list.
Just intuitively though, RR would only be interested in the turbine/generator part rather than the actual reactor, Barlick might be a good location but the UKSMR is far behind that none of the present workforce can realistically be expected to benefit.

What about transferable skills, like making dwarf cars, perhaps based on the How Wheels range?

Mini Rolls
Something like that, should be now never mind the future and car roads half as wide for small vehicles only.
Get the biggies off the road or it's silly Elon Musck and his GIGA-CARS
Trade should be rail.
