Brentford pulling another rabbit out of the hat
Brentfords signing of Toney is a shrewd move
He looked useful in FA cup v us.
He can develop and has a good potential sell on value.
I know before I get slagged off ,Brentford aren't Premier league but they do seem to have a knack of discovering gems that others dont.
The business model seems to work but the sale of the new ground and lease back would make me nervous if I were a Bees supporter.
You need to keep control of your ground not speculate with its value
Look at Coventry and Bolton for two cautionary tales when you dont own your ground.

I didn't think much to him when he played against us.

It will be interesting to see how he does this season. I presume they will now sell Watkins to Villa.

Is £5 million shrewd?
We've paid a lot less for strikers who turned out to be shrewd afterwards.

Hasn't Brentford's "Successful Business Model" seen them sell their ground and grow net debt by over £100m in the last 7 years?
Re: Brentford pulling another rabbit out of the hat
Five year contract and deal could reach £10million

Debt was at around £60 million according to last accounts with wages operating at 124% of turnover.
Without player sales they'd be knackered even more.

Brentford are currently a very well built house.
Made out of a deceptively expensive pack of cards.

That's Ace, hope he's a diamond as they are one of the better clubs.

Re: Brentford pulling another rabbit out of the hat
Interesting one about Toney. He said he wanted to leave Peterborough to go and play in the Premier League. Peterborough confirmed that they had not received a single enquiry from any Premier League club.
Will this be a good deal for Peterborough or Brentford? Time will tell.

99% of clubs cannot afford the proven real deal they have little choice other to rely on speculation or a wonderful uk/European scouting system. Not many clubs are producing 1st team players with their academy's either 1-2 here and there.

Re: Brentford pulling another rabbit out of the hat
No idea about their finances and whether the club is being run well or is a disaster waiting to happen but if you look at the size and history of Brentford FC them having a sustained period in the second tier and challenging for promotion to the Premier League is a massive achievement
In almost 70 years of football they've only spent one season above tier 3 and had steadily averaged gates of around 5-6k before getting into the Championship. Something has been done right at Brentford over the last 10 years and Id guess at least part of that is to find players they can improve, get some value from on the pitch and then sell on for decent money
Whether part of this success has been pumping money to cover losses which leaves them unstable I dont know but on the pitch Brentford have been punching well above their weight just like we have been in the Premier League

There’s an interesting comment at the link re the transfer market being depressed by COVID. That was posted in May but current evidence suggests that’s not going to be the case.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 1:37 pmhttps://twitter.com/SwissRamble/status/ ... 14209?s=19

Fantastic system if you can continue to sign players and then sell them on for profits. Just the problem when inevitably you get two or three difficult years when the sales become less lucrative.

Re: Brentford pulling another rabbit out of the hat
Although the fee paid to Exeter City was "undisclosed" it was rumoured to be in the ballpark of £1.8m. Ollie Watkins was also "EFL young player of the year" so could hardly be put in the bracket of "under the radar." But Brentford were the club that struck the deal and will reap the rewards when he moves on for a substantially higher fee.
