All creatures great and small

Post by Bosscat » Tue Sep 01, 2020 10:33 pm

Just watched Channel 5's retake on James Herriots "All creatures great and small".... not bad at all.

Timothy West takes the Seigfried role very well will be interesting to watch it pan out.

Just spotted and recorded it... with some trepidation. Love Herriot, and the BBC series was absolutely bang on the money for me... got them all on DVD (had to get Dutch imports of later series) and still watch them at least annually.... hope I can give it a fair try... Timothy, Hardy and Davidson set the bar very high.

Its not Timothy West. Its his son Sam, but he's a dead wringer for him. Very enjoyable. BBC would never have put that on. Too much white privilege. Beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Really enjoyed it.

Interestingly Robert Hardyโ€™s name still pops up in my life regularly.... not only was he a renown actor.... he was also one of the leading world expert on the English medieval longbow.

I know I missed out the word "son" in the OP
    ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ .

I didn't want to like it but they played it close to the book like the BBC did 40 years ago .... plus they use the music too in the credits (albeit a slightly updated version ๐Ÿ™‚)

I haven't seen it yet, normally I'd be wary of remakes, but this has had decent reviews, so I'll catch up later in the week.

I've seen snippets of the original, and Davidson was very good in that, so it's a tough role to portray and live up to his standing.

It's got a highly rated cast, Diana Rigg included, and I'm glad they've got a Scottish actor to play the James Heriot role, as he graduated from Glasgow University, hence why we've got a library named after him.

I've always wanted to go to the museum I believe it's a Thirsk or around them parts, I'm not sure if anybody could recommend it or have visited themselves.

It was my wife who flagged this one at the weekend. Which surprised me as she's big into murder/crime drama, vampire shows, magic (she's currently watching something called 'Cursed' on Netflix) and dragons etc. So was surprised she was a big fan of the original.
Been many a year since I saw the original. Vaguely remember it being rather gentle in pace with a bit of comedic drama thrown in. Is this version following the same sort of pattern?

I know, I was there! Just came across it last September on a day out. I'd never realised what a tedious job film making is. But there are compensations with the nice catering and welfare arrangements they had off-set. They were all around Grassington and surrounding areas for about four months last autumn and the Christmas period. My wife said I should apply to be an extra because I'm a grumpy old git in a flat cap!

Grassington is full of โ€œgrumpy old gits in flat capsโ€, it is after all Yorkshire!

A few continuity issues on his first visit to fix the horse. After he'd waded through mud and then rolled about in it, his suit and shoes were immaculate in the next scene. Also I doubt if many have woofed down a full English and looked quite so good minutes after having to be woken up with a raging hangover.
    Otherwise pretty good.

Pure nostalgia... the world as we would love it to be.. when all was well (even though it wasn't but we imagine it was).
No BLM, no EU, no Boris, no Trump, Putin or Covid.
The world through rose tinted glasses and escapism... just had a week int Dales on a farm... the real world forgotten for a week.

I really enjoyed as I love the old countryside stories and wallowing in nostalgia. The odd thing was the housekeeper who looked very young and was rather dishy ! I think if she was really that good looking Siegfried and James would have been somewhat distracted.!!
