Let's see who gets closest with these two questions
74 seasons since football resumed after World War II but
1. How many players have played league football for Burnley in those 74 seasons?
2. How many players have scored league goals for Burnley in those 74 seasons?
Question 2 excludes own goals by opposition players.
Answer away and I'll post the correct answers at 2:45 p.m.

Re: Let's see who gets closest with these two questions
On the basis that most players in years gone by, stayed with their respective clubs rather longer than they do now, and of course, we now have much bigger squads, I'll hazard a guess that the average stay over that time is about 3 to 4 years. That gives most of them the chance to score at least one goal.
Pure guess that is probably miles out, 380 players with 280 scoring a goal.
You can all laugh later, cause I really haven't a clue.

74 seasons, I doubt 10+ new players came into the team every year, to make it 740+ players and play for the first team.
I'll go with 205 players

I think claretonthecoast1882 is the closest on the number to have played and Tribesmen on the goalscorers.

Clearly had to be under 740, but expected it to be less than that.

Re: Let's see who gets closest with these two questions
Absolutely he did, missed that one.
Re: Let's see who gets closest with these two questions
I reckon an average playing squad of 22 with a 20% turnover and 70% scoring which would give:
1. 343 players in total
2. 240 scorers
EDIT, clearly I should have refreshed the page and looked at a clock.
Surprised it was so many, that's along the lines of a 25 man squad with a 30% turnover.

Do I win on the goals market then after being announced a winner then having the trophy taken away before I even lifted it

Please try to remember your overseas readers, I don't switch my computer on and have my first coffee until 1 pm your time and always do my emails first, so if at all possible for these in the future can you provide the answers a few hours later or even the next morning, Taffy is on the west coast and two hours behind me.
Just a request, that's all.

Re: Let's see who gets closest with these two questions
I was thinking of taking a "structured" approach, like you, aggi.aggi wrote: ↑Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:27 pmI reckon an average playing squad of 22 with a 20% turnover and 70% scoring which would give:

I wouldn't have had average squad as high as 22 from the earlier seasons. On the other hand, I'd have included a number of "handful" of games only players. For example, was there a player called John Murray who scored a few goals in the emergence of the "team of the 70s" (1968) and then moved to Blackpool a few weeks later. My average turnover figure would have been higher to take account of these "passing through" players, including those who didn't quite get established from the development squads.

I trust Paul Stewart will be omitted from any list, what he did cannot be classified as "played football"

That's almost as many as the number of threads started by Tiger76 in a good week!
Sorry about that, it's a slow week.
