Song endings...

Normally we discuss the best opening bars/lines/intro's from songs, but whilst in the shower this morning, i listened to some music and it struck me whilst listening to two songs in particular, just how good the endings were.
Namely The Smiths - what difference does it make?. Marrs guitar at the end could go on forever for me. I know it's repetetive and not a `guitar solo` in the strictest sense, but it's absolutely addictive. Followed by the drum solo at the end of The Jams - Funeral Pyre....great but not long enough.

This got me thinking.... are there anymore songs with great endings that i love?

I'll add The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel, and leave it at that for now.

Anyone have any to add?

I'm going to go with the opposite reference.

She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd, I know its a song that has rightfully been left in the rotting waste bin of the early 2000s... but I remember listening to this song on the radio (it heavily overplayed at the time) and it always used to bother me that it had no big ending.

It's just flat... it needs like a stadium drum and the electric guitar solo crescendoing into the lead screaming 'SHE HATES MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!' Dummer solo.... (beat) Bam!

It used to **** me off when djs cut of the end of "once in a lifetime" by the talking heads.
"sanctuary" by New music cut off abruptly on the single version but not on the album. The single version was better.
There are several great tracks that get progressively frantic up to a great final climax:-
Green grasses and high tides: the outlaws
Frank Martins exceptional piece that I can't remember what it's called but it's something like "concerto for 5 instruments".
Or suddenly soothing after a bit of chaos like yes's gates of delerium (the live version is so much better).
Or with a guitar masterpiece: perfect water by boc.
"the dead man's dream" and "feel" both by the Church.

Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance

Arctic Monkeys - The Jewellers Hands. The whole song is so underrated (Not by Monkeys fans). It’s taken from the album Humbug and closes out the album. One of the most remarkable albums I’ve ever heard. In my top 3 of all time with Blonde on Blonde and Is This It. Anyone who likes their bands, should give it a few goes. It’s nothing like you’d expect from them.

The Boy With the Thorn In His Side is yet another great Smiths outro. Marr’s guitar from another planet.

Also Freak Like Me when the ‘Are Friends Electric’ synth kicks back in, the slow down at the end of ‘Belfast’ by Orbital and the kitchen sink treatment in the Purple Rain outro.

Just like claptrappers I’m going the other way.

I can’t stand the ending of Sugar Hiccup by the Cocteau Twins. It’s a fade out! That melody could go on for about 10 minutes and make it an absolute transcendental classic ,or stop abruptly with aplomb. Instead, the producer (presumably Watts?) fades it out! Charlatan.

Ha ha, Yes that's exactly what I do, I make my own mind up, and along with many music critics at the time thought the song was 3 minutes too long. Let's be honest here no matter who writes it, if the best lyric you can come up with is na-na-na-na it generally shows that you haven't finished writing it yet.

The song itself is a gem, but the ending is pants ..... Anyway Wilson Pickett's version is better (IMHO)

Icu8, Hey Jude was the biggest selling single in the Uk, USA and in fact world wide in 1968, so millions of people enjoyed the whole song. I was around in 1968 and don't recall any critics panning the ending, just the opposite in fact, it was considered novel, different and innovative.
On song endings, I always liked George Harrison's guitar chords at the end of "A Hard Days Night".

Indeed it WAS novel, different and innovative which is why (despiteit being an obvious choice) I included it here.

It was also marvellously popular and continues to be so.

You didn't read the NME then?, Even the orchestra that were hired to perform on it had to be paid double to persuade them to play on it. The coda is 3 simple chords ( I, V, IV ) in typical and common musical terms that had been used thousands of times previously and thousands of times since.

So not at all innovative, the only (almost) innovative thing about the song was its length as a radio 'pop' song and was only played by the DJ's producers because it was The Beatles. (McCartney said as such himself).
So I maintain that the song is good, but the ending is too long. The less said about the 'lyrics' the better.

Anyhoo, Who am I to say what people like or should not like, I do know that if I had written it, It wouldn't have had any air time. But because it was the Fab Four it got the entire song aired.

I don't think you'll find many musicians who rate it. (The ending that is). Unless you only know a few chords

In the NME readers poll Hey Jude was voted the best single of the year and it also won an Ivor Novello award. It was inducted into the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science Hall of fame in 2001. In 2004, "Rolling Stone" placed Hey Jude at number 8 in the "500 Greatest Songs of all Time"
