Well you weren't the only one to get it wrong. That's disgusting after Ancelotti publicly warned him his performances had to improve.

I hope he has a nightmare.

I really thought he was going to play this week and then the national press jumped on it leaving me all but certain. When the team was announced I was ready to post the good news and then Pickford in that line up. The one consolation is there's no Mings but is he really going to play Tripps at left back with Gomez & Dier in the centre of defence?

I wasn't sure, I was certainly hoping and felt there was a good chance, but in the end it is somehow not a surprise. Makes you think about how is he thinking, what is his strategy, NP must be wondering what he has to do to get past Pickford give the season long performances we have all seen.

Why the hell does Sarfgate bother watching so many of our games if he's going to pick Pickford and Mings ahead of Pope and Tarky?

Can't fathom that at all.

I hope Pickford has a stinker.

As for Tripps at LB? The mind boggles.

I thought 3 at the back with Dier anchoring when I saw the lineup but it's anybody's guess.

First thought was a back four of Walker - Gomez - Dier - Trippier but to be honest, I'm not sure how on earth he's going to sort that eleven into a formation.

Seem to have heard that before Frank, but this time we'll probably be OK because half their first choice players haven't turned up including JBG.

Ridiculous decision. When Southgate first came in he seemed very keen to pick players who were deserved of their place regardless of their name and club. I've backed him because he seemed to attract a lot of criticism despite England going for so long without a game. But this is sending out a message to some of England's fringe players that they may as well not bother. Pope is basically wasting his time training with England as it's clear that Pickford has the number 1 jersey regardless.

To add to Nick's disappointment will be that he started England's last game, so Southgate can't even fall back on him sticking with his previous line up.

There was a statistic in the Times mid week that showed how many points each Premier league keeper had saved their team last season.
Henderson was either top or near the top with around 8 points. Pope was minus 3 points. Clearly from this stat, the defence is what makes Pope look good.

Granted he is good on crosses, but how many crosses do you get in international football...

My view is he goes for far too many shots with his feet, he isn't vocal enough, his kicking is poor, he is not comfortable with the ball at his feet and some of the shots he lets in leave me with the feeling that he should have done better for a keeper rated as Premier league class.

I think there's five players in there who aren't necessarily of the required standard you'd hope for from an England player.

And there's another who I think is good enough but who is being played completely out of position.

In that respect in reminds me of when Andy Sinton played left-back for England, a position he had never played in his life. For club, youths or juniors.

It's pretty good in attack - Foden Sterling Sancho.Kane.

The defence is just a messed up jigaw + Pickford.

Saw a similar set of stats and Pope came out top

His kicking style is deliberately coached By the management and is a key way of how we play - it’s not poor kicking, it’s done deliberately to affect the tempo of the game

Absolute joke Southgate. Even Everton fans have been calling Pickford this season, not just for his performances, but becasue he's a little prick

Well that's opened up 2 hours free for me tonight then.

Also, Dier, Rice, and Gomez should be nowhere near the team. England not been worth watching since the 90s

As a Burnley fan it's disappointing Pope isn't playing. As an England fan it's absolutely shocking and infuriating that Pickford is.

And the back four is absolutely bizarre.

Southgate must be fearing for his job... not picking our players because he knows Dyche will succeed him - that can be the only explanation for it...

Pickford in goal, Dier and Gomez centre backs and Trippier, I assume, at left back, what a load of crap! I've never said this in my life before but it wouldn't bother me if England get beat by a few goals. Southgate could then make his excuse that it's a young team, which is still work in progress. That's got be one of the worst defences every to wear England shirts. I was going to go out to my local sports bar to watch it, don't think I can be @rsed now.

Just three out of the back five playing out of position.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll romp to victory but Southgate has plummeted down in my estimations. That line up sends a statement that the fringe goalkeepers and defenders are not required.

I see on the BBC where they offered readers to pick the 11 to start, the results have shown Henderson in Goal, and Pickford got only 9% of the votes from the public that entered the 11 they thought should be playing. Southgate definitely in a minority on this GK selection

BBC polls for football are a popularity contest for the big clubs - of course Henderson got the vote because he’s a Man Utd player

No, just stating my opinion on Pope and trying to give reasons why Southgate is still choosing Pickford over Pope.

Too many on here rave about Pope and I'm not quite sure why.
The stat isn't mine, it was in the Times this week.

I have posted before that when Southgate saw Pope during training he was less than impressed, also in the Times.

I'm sorry, I'm an England fan, but that line up needs to lose. Utterly ridiculous.

It's a good job England have plenty of firepower in attack, because I wouldn't bank your mortgage on that defence keeping a clean sheet, Dier and Rice as cb's FFS, when he's got Coady and Keane on the bench, I can just about understand Pope not starting, but to not even replace Pick the ball out of the net, with Henderson is mind-blowing.

Square pegs in round holes comes to mind, it didn't work before for England, and it won't work this time either, now due to the fact it's Iceland, and a vastly understrength Iceland, he might just get away with it tonight, but if that team and formation line up in the Denmark match, England will get gubbed.

I liked Southgate at first for letting players play regardless of which club they was at but his decisions since the World Cup have become more and more strange.
He didn't pick a left back is he really saying for example Charlie Taylor, Brandon Williams or even Luke Shaw couldnt fill in against Iceland better than Trippier?
Dier an Mings being selected in a squad is itself awful let alone Dier starting.
Hate to say it but I hope we lose a few in a row so there's a change but not much would change regardless of manager because the emphasis from the FA is to pick a squad on shirt sales not success
