I know its a big deal once the qualifications are done, and Euros or world cup games are televised, but are there lot's of england fans on here ?
do you know fans that can be bothered travelling to watch them home or away?
always strikes me from the coverage that most are from the lower league towns from the banners. it's like the national team is their adopted club.
I don't mind the "big games", but usually the international scene is just an irritant and distraction from league football.
I wouldn't be bothered if there was no international games.
Not a clue how it is for other nations, but I assume for many success plays a huge part, italians, brazilians, french, spanish , germans etc are rightfully optimistic ahead of a tournament, so maybe its down to decades of abject failure that spoils it for fans in this country.

And besides, the quality we now watch week in week out on the turf is arguably better than we are served up by the national team.

Yep. I always look forward to England games and it's better with fewer friendlies.

Before the last World Cup I hadn’t been seriously bothered by a knockout/ defeat since France 98.


The Wags era of footballers really put me off. Fortunately in Russia we showed some passion. I still don’t think we did well. We got knocked out by a far inferior nation on paper so I didn’t get all the “well done lads” rubbish. However, it did seem like they were all giving their all and it was entertaining

Not since 2010, I genuinely couldn't be arsed after that one and I've not watched a full game since.

Bored of watching managers pick players instead of teams.

Used to go all the time home and away, lost interest though as I got older. I went to the last euros In France and World Cup in Russia but I haven't been to Wembley for about 4/5 years.

Wouldn’t bat an eye lid if they scrapped international football. All it does for me is give us unnecessary breaks in the season.

Il watch England if there is nothing else on. But to be honest I can’t remember the last time I genuinely watched England play well.

I tend to get sucked in for the major tournaments, not interested in anything else though, I’ll go as far as skimming through a match report on BBC Sport, that’s it.

I’d rather see Burnley win the League Cup than England win the World Cup to be honest

I like to watch England, it’s something different than club football. I struggle to get too invested in international friendlies/Nations League etc. but find myself getting involved in the major tournaments. It’s nice to watch England with mates who support other clubs and having a shared support.

I think most football fans get involved in the tournaments so I reckon there’s quite a lot of fibbers who like to tell everyone how ambivalent they are about England. Also it’s quite self-centred to see international football as a distraction to club football as international football is the pinnacle of the game.

I agree with you there! The whole atmosphere in England during the World Cup in Russia was brilliant!

While that clown Southgate runs England they aren't worth watching.

When your club team is lower leagues or doing crap then supporting England is a priority.

When your club team is doing well, the national team interest goes to sh!t.

I still strongly support England cricket and rugby teams (go on plenty of games and watch on TV) but Ive not gone to an England footy game for 15+ years and not even considered it in the past 10 or so. I often dont bother even watching on TV.

Ive still got a couple of mates who watch England footy home and away but I dont really feel the connection any more.

self centred , what nonsense, supporting my club is important, what affinity should I have for the booze and betting fiasco that is supporting england ? It is the opposite of pinnacle.

Although Burnley comes first whilst we have to play the anti football stuff to survive against the odds its nice to support a team in England who play good attacking football and can take the game to the opposition

It’s self centred in that a lot more people care about the national team than they do about a club team. Your post proves my point because you say that supporting your club is important and why should you have an affinity to England. Nobody is claiming otherwise, but just because you don’t care about the national team doesn’t mean that others don’t.

Edit - it is the pinnacle. Representing ones country is the pinnacle of a player’s career. Winning the World Cup is the most prestigious achievement of a player’s career.

Have followed England home and away for many years with both family and mates.

Never ceases to amaze me how many Burnley fans we have met on our away trips with England. There are usually Clarets flags to be seen at most away games either inside the stadiums or in the city centres beforehand.

We even bumped into Dave Burnley and his mate in Kosovo in November.

I know a couple of hooligans, albeit ageing ones, who claim to be England fans and love the Summer tournaments. I'm not sure they watch the games.

I’ve never seen anyone claim that they wish they hadn’t been called up to their national side. I’ve heard a lot of people saying it was the proudest moment of their career though. Have you read Tarkowski’s latest interview? Just because you don’t care about the national team doesn’t deflect from the fact that most footballers see playing for the national side as the pinnacle of their career.

The press digging up sh1te on our players/management before major tournaments turned me off international football. They should be hung for treason.
In any sport everybody has to pull together.

the players bread and butter is club football, the england structure is awash (and always has been) with coaches and people the fans and players despise.
the press wait in the shadows until the inevitable balls up, and have their field day. graham taylor, steve mc laren, beckham for his red card, rooney for his touchline outburst. there was no glory in any of that. reputations ruined, and as club players, they were idolised.

The press is certainly critical and negative in England, no different to Italy or France though.

The press is a lot more positive toward the national team in Germany, even in Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. They back their national team and managers and as such the teams play without so much pressure.

Loved away days in the past with England, trips to Turkey, Hungary, Poland etc. The euros in Sweden and France 98 were 2 brilliant holidays. Beating Germany 5-1 in their own backyard is probably as good as it gets for a one off game.

Sadly England then became popular with the fancy dress brigade, the membership scheme and the mobile phone footy fan and the appeal became less and less. Now tend to watch on TV and spend the cash elsewhere.

I will always follow them on TV but not that fanatical that I'd ever go to Wembley to watch them and definitely wouldn't go abroad to watch them. Don't think I could even justify buying a ticket if they played at Turf Moor. That money would be better spent on a Burnley game.

I used to go to Wembley, old and new, to watch England games and spend the weekend down in the smoke. In the end I got sick of the locals from Chelsea, spurs etc saying stuff like “ hey lads, this geezer is from Buurrrnnnlleey, did you come down on your horse and cart”? I just thought sod it keep your bloody England.

I honestly only get excited about an England game these days if we are playing the Scots.

I’ve only been to two England’s games, One was against Poland at Wembley in 1993 the other was against Azerbaijan at St James Park in 2005.

My ex worked for O2 at the time and I think she has access to free tickets, or there was some kind of promotion. Also, the new Wembley was being built and the team where playing home games around the country (which I think they should still do) and Newcastle was a ground we fancied visiting. Wembley is too much hassle.

The most memorable part was the busy concourse area before the game started, I had the genius idea of finding our seats first and getting food and drinks during the national anthems. I was right, it was empty. I returned as the songs finished and the man behind us was absolutely perplexed! He was disgusted that as an Englishman I would purposely leave during the national anthem. He was shocked that they’d the even served me too.

He spent the whole game slagging the players off

England don't do great even against average teams . It's all over-hyped, and the team selections over the years have made it more tedious. As someone said above, I don't get the media claiming how well we did at the World Cup... we only beat poor teams, and failed against teams we should really be beating. To think there was a DVD out over our tournament is pretty laughable. I've not been bothered since the 90s - when we showed fight and passion and had some players worthy of watching...not the likes of Eric Dier and Declan Rice

I think el Tel was in charge last time I got excited about England... though the smashing of the Germans was a good night.
More interested in Burnley reserves, except when Clarets are on the pitch.

Same. It's a good laugh once every couple of years if the weather's nice and game's are on in the evening. Russia was fun as we had a lucky draw and it went from a sort of ironic 'it's coming home' ridicule to briefly dreaming it might. Up until we played a good team as usual.

No idea what goes on in friendlies, nations league or qualifiers. I know we play Moldova a lot but that's about the limit of my interest.
