England vs Australia 1st ODI

Post by dandeclaret » Fri Sep 11, 2020 12:57 pm

Bairstow, Roy, Root, Morgan, Billings, Buttler, Ali, Woakes, Rashid, Archer, Wood....

No Smith for Australia, with Labuschange in.

England won the toss and bowl first.

Bairstow has taken off the cymbals, and Buttler will keep wicket.

Off we go.......

Cracking spell of fast bowling from Archer, and what a wicket taking ball! I think Archer is improving with more experience with every game.

80-3 off 15. Joe Buttler with a really good catch behind the stumps. Stoinis gone for 43.

Wood bowling impeccably at the moment.

103-4 - Labuschagne gone - LBW Rashid.

A shocking review from the Steve Smith wannabe.

Rashid shows his class once again, capable of getting anyone out, they just can't pick his googly.

Australia 290+ after 50 overs, a challenging total, chase will be interesting.

Should be a great game, very even. Never been chased at OT but we are the best in the world so it’s more that doable

Decent total to chase against a decent bowling attack.

Only takes 2 big scores and the rest chipping in though.

It's them scores near 400 when you think 2 lads can get 100s and we still lose by quite a few.

Difficult to play these opening bowlers with no form or practice, Roy struggling as is Bairstow.

Struggling massively. And when I switched on to see them 100-5 (or something) I thought we’d smash them.

No need to check ultra edge.... Johnny's not got bat on ball all night.

Whilst Morgan is in, the game is still alive, but requires in all likelihood a Morgan Buttler masterclass to chase this down now.

The Aussie attack are the best in the world at sticking to line and length and rarely bowl bad balls.

Until someone takes risks and hits them off their line.

We will have to go after the spinner to catch up

Bairstow's failure to hit the ball puts Morgan under pressure to hit everything.

Bairstow did well to say he's well out of form, like half the team.
Hopefully he's played himself back into form with that knock.

If we were batting first I would expect us to hit over 300 from here, but that's why I would always bat first.

I think we win if we don't get bowled out. A few hitters down the order to score quickly.

Shame Bairstow took 19 overs to play himself in and put pressure on the rest of the team.

Buttler and Root were the big wickets, Jos especially. If he'd played his way in a little the target would have come tumbling down.

Certainly started slow and is out of form, struggled badly at times.

But we were chasing less than a run a ball, so 84 from 104 by an opener is a decent platform for the team to build on.

Especially in the context of the game. 15/2 with the ball doing loads to get within 15 at the end under lights is a great effort. Bairstow and Billings made a game of it when there wasn’t a game to be made.

I actually think Bairstow should be applauded for sticking in instead of petulantly getting out trying to moo it over cow when it wasn’t a road

Australia's strength is putting a competitive score on the board and defending it. Take that out of the equation by batting first when you win the toss. Post 300 and its not often you'll lose against them

The game was won (and lost) in the first 8/9 over of the England reply when the Aussies bowled exceptionally well and Bairstow was made to really struggle, Root couldn't get bat on ball as it was moving all over the place (until he edged one!) and Hazlewood took a superb catch and bowled 3 maidens. Not an awful lot the batters could have done differently tbh, just really good bowling, which made 294 look a million miles away. I thought Jonny (and I'm not his biggest fan) did well in the end to post a decent strike rate after so many early dots and without him we'd have been nowhere near.

England let them off the hook with the ball, they should never be posting nearly 300 after being 123-5 at the halfway stage, Marsh & Maxwell did play brilliantly though, and Australia were the better side in a close contest.

If Bairstow's out of form he's not scoring badly 55 followed by an 84, that's decent in my book, and this Aussie attack is arguably the best in world cricket in all formats right now.

Despite the reverse England can take a lot of positives from this game, the most obvious being Sam Billings, he's surely cemented his place in the side for the foreseeable future after that knock.

And Archer is getting back to his best, at his optimum he's a fearsome weapon for England, and allied with Wood their pace can be deadly.
