Banks Closed Saturday Morning

Post by mikeS » Sat Sep 12, 2020 11:53 am

Just been down Burnley and only Santander and Natwest banks are open. The Nationwide, Marsden and Yorkshire Banks which are normally open on Saturday morning were all closed. Nationwide has a notice on the door saying, Closed - nearest bank is Blackburn. Er, no thanks. Barclays have been shut on Saturday throughout the pandemic. Looks like the banks are going back to the old days of five days a week and closing at 3.:00pm.

Just be grateful that the branches are still there. A lot of towns have lost theirs.

The old opening hours used to be really restricting but I rarely have a need to go into a bank these days

Santander have gone in Skipton...

NatWest have gone in Settle...
Barclays in Settle are only open 3 days a week Monday Tuesday and Friday.

NarWest had a Van that called in Whitefriars carpark for 2 hours 2 days a week ... thats now stopped due to Cov19...

Online banking has killed the High Street Branches in small towns.

This is why I like having a Metro bank account, they're open 7 days a week, Inc the bank Holidays I think.
They shut for Xmas and boxing day, maybe even New years day.

If they can do it then you've got to wonder why the bigger banks don't bother and would rather their customers lose out.

Because Metro Bank don’t make any profits? That’s why other banks don’t do it.

That seems as good a reason as any for not doing it

I haven't changed my Nationwide named branch even though I moved from Daventry to Solihull over 20 years ago. I can do practically everything I need to do online, using a shop's card payment system or at an ATM. The only times I have had to visit the branch in Solihull in the last 10 years has been those rare occasions you receive an actual cheque rather than a bank transfer.

When you're getting paid cash in hand and you need to put a small amount in the bank

There must be some real benefits of banking with those.

I can even pay a cheque into my account using my mobile banking app now and that’s used to be the only reason I’ve been in a branch.

Problem with internet banking - who do you talk to when it goes wrong? I had enough trouble getting my Dad's money sorted out when he died, and that was with a proper paper trail and a branch to go into. How many ways would an internet-only bank have of ignoring you?

Metro Bank started by American guy who wanted to be different - spent a fortune on doing the opposite to all other banks and in particular by choosing the most expensive high street locations.
Had their wrists slapped for some very serious accounting errors (let’s be nice and call them that !!)
Jury is still out as whether their model will be a success. Personally I can’t see how it will be - either they are right and all the others are wrong or t’other way round !

Lots of new banks like Starling, Monza etc with only online presence and really neat technology in payments and mobile banking.

We will see how they get on, but it's nice having a bank that's open at reasonable times which allows people time to go in and get stuff done.

The 3 nearest Barclays branches to me all close on Saturdays which is useless for those of us who're unable to go into the branch in the week and they all close before 4pm.

If I call into my NatWest in Skipton and pay a cheque or anything... I get a bloody text asking me to do a survey on the reasons for my visit.

So I always berate them for closing local branches like Settle etc (which was always busy) and making me travel 12 miles to visit a branch 🙄 has no influence though 😂😂😂
