Defour on Mee
This is taken from an article on the Athletic. I can’t help wondering if it actually tells us more about Stephen Defour than it does about Ben Mee...
If ever a story summed up Ben Mee, it is the one told by former Burnley team-mate Steven Defour.
It was December 2017 and they were playing Leicester City away. During the game, Mee went into a challenge with Jamie Vardy and was left with a huge gash on his leg. Instead of going to the hospital, he told the physios to patch it up — with good reason.
“He just wanted to go on the Christmas do,” laughs Defour. “He just said to put a bandaid on it and off he came with us.
“When he showed me the gash, I was just like, ‘Wow’. I would have been straight to the hospital. I said that to him, and he just looked and me and said, ‘It’s OK’, and just got on with it.”

I’ll bet it wasn’t the worst gash he’d ever seen

Re: Defour on Mee
Defour has had a lot to say about Burnley recently. I wonder if he's secretly harbouring a wish to come back? If he's fully fit again, he'd certainly do a job for us despite his age.

Sounds like Defour is after a coaching role, we can certainly do a lot worse than get him in the youth set up or something, were short in midfield also.

Like when Gordon Cowans came to coach and ended up running the midfield?Giftonsnoidea wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 11:41 amSounds like Defour is after a coaching role, we can certainly do a lot worse than get him in the youth set up or something, were short in midfield also.

Of course he would if he was fit but he hasn’t been fit for years, his career is long finished, shame but we did get to see some magicGordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 11:37 amDefour has had a lot to say about Burnley recently. Well, in a recent article, he said he was fully fit again, though probably not 'Dyche fit'. Shame.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 11:46 amOf course he would if he was fit but he hasn’t been fit for years, his career is long finished, shame but we did get to see some magic
Re: Defour on Mee
What an option to have on the bench for 20 minute cameos though... Man Utd staff would have palpitations with Jay Rod up front and Defour on the benchGordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 11:49 amWell, in a recent article, he said he was fully fit again, though probably not 'Dyche fit'. Shame.

The Leicester game referred to was the day Robbie Brady suffered his injury.

I watched the Chelsea 3-2 win again recently when they showed it on Sky. That showed how good Defour was but unfortunately we only really got half a season from him.Red Fox Rocks Socks wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:39 pmA real shame. Looked the best player on the pitch every week. He was brilliant

In his recent interview where he praised Burnley and said how much he enjoyed himself here, he said he was now fully fit. Whatever fully fit means.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:52 pmWasn’t fit enough to play in the Belgian league last season

Re: Defour on Mee
He left us last August and went straight into playing but it didn’t last long. Nothing to suggest unfortunately that he’ll be able to get and keep himself fit.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:54 pmIn his recent interview where he praised Burnley and said how much he enjoyed himself here, he said he was now fully fit. Burnley Express 25th August.
"With the Covid situation I did lots of running, lots of cycling, so I think my condition has to be one of the best in my career," said Defour.

I think we’d all love a fully fit Defour back with us. Unfortunately, for him and us, his body just doesn’t seem to be up to it.

Re: Defour on Mee
I’m not sure I agree on that.
I could be wrong but I don’t recall many games where Defour came on and influenced a game later on.
I thought he was more effective when he started games. It could have been fitness but he didn’t seem the sort of player that can quickly jump into a game at the pace it’s being played at.
With our obviously limited funds, using any of it on a player that would or could only play a bit part, no matter how good he is, is probably an extravagance.

When was Defour ever a player to come on as a sub and affect a game?Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 1:04 pmAs Zlatan said, 20 minute cameos would certainly be worth having at the back end of games.

Re: Defour on Mee
Not sure what you're judging that on. Has he ever been tried as a late sub? With nine subs on the bench, it's not as though he'd be needed all the time.DCWat wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 1:09 pmI’m not sure I agree on that.

I really don't think he would be getting paid enough for wages to be a worry, and he could start to get his coaching badges at Burnley, which is something else he wants to do. Imagine having someone with his flair, teaching the young lads.

I wouldn’t be against him coaching with us, if it benefited both parties.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 1:18 pmNot sure what you're judging that on. Has he ever been tried as a late sub? With nine subs on the bench, it's not as though he'd be needed all the time.

I’m just not convinced by him being registered as a player. The times he came on as sub, I don’t think he was regularly effective.

Waddle, Roeder, Wood and Cowans and maybe others let us down badly. When we played Ballmouth away they were all on the beer the night before the game.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:37 pmAnd how good was he? Shame he wasn’t able to keep playing.
Re: Defour on Mee
Wouldn't be against him finishing his coaching badges with us and coaching the U18's alongside other staff. Could learn a lot from a former Belgian international. Plus he's another foot in the European network. He must have some unique contacts on the continent we can use.
