This can’t be true surely ?? Thought league cup got something like 2nd round qualifying ? While I think the Europa is decent and gets good crowds ( pre C19) and gives real buzz for smaller clubs ,a Europa conference league JUST to qualify seems preposterous . Unless this is replacing qualifying rounds full stop ?

No teams qualify directly. The 32 group stage entrants will be decided as follows:

• Seventeen teams from the UEFA Europa Conference League main path.

• Five teams from the UEFA Europa Conference League champions path.

• Ten teams eliminated in the UEFA Europa League play-offs.

Becoming more and more irrelevant as the last time a team outside the top 4 won the league cup was 2013. It usually then reverts to the team finishing 7th in the league.

They were going for guaranteed European entry. This comp. might not be so enticing, being Euro third tier.

No, they go into the Europa Northern Premier League.

all part of the grand plan of the European Clubs Association and what they have in mind post 2024 - if you don't like this that will make your blood freeze - Covid has lain much of the public discussion on the subject dormant but don't think for a second that the big clubs haven't been pushing their agenda in the background - Gianni Agnelli president of the ECA saw his club announce Euro 70m+ losses today (that's losses 3 years in a row) . Barcelona saw revenues drop by over Euro 230m last season as a result of Covid. The subject has been an extensive feature of the MMT thread from it's early days.

Basically England will get 7 teams in Europe, 4 in Champions League, 2 in Europa League and 1 in this new Conference League, so for teams like us who could come mid-table etc it won't effect our chances of getting into Europe unless we have another superb season and get 7th.

More chance for clubs like us to have a good run in Europe though, on the rare occasion one of the "smaller" clubs qualifies.
