Pope penalty save - would that have been OK in the PL?

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Sep 19, 2020 11:06 am

With VAR in operation in the Premier League and the new rules on goalkeepers coming off the line at penalties, I wonder how VAR would have interpreted this when he made the save in the shoot out. Obviously can't see where the ball is at the time of this but it must have been very close to a retake.

It may not have gone to penalties if var was used as sheff Utd would have been down to ten men for most of the game. Pope looks ok to me though.

I don't know what the ruling is but he's still got a foot behind the goal line.

No way should that be a retaken penalty for me.

I'm not sure of the ruling to be honest. Does one foot behind the line mean it's OK or does one foot in front of the line mean it's not?

IFAB rules

“When the ball is kicked, the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, or in line with, the goal line.“

So I’d say behind the line is ok.
In fact in front of line is ok as long a heal is touching the line

I've seen keepers starting behind the line, i don't know the full ruling but surely if you have 1 foot on the line or behind it, then it's ok.

Thanks, that clears it up, it's OK.

Apart from them having 10 men and their goal having been disallowed for offside it is unlikely there would have been penalties

Looks like a no ball to me. The line is the umpire's.

Free hit as well for the next penalty.

If that`s the same lino n the picture that couldn`t see JBG shocker, I reckon Nick Pope could have run out taken pen himself, blasted it over and he wouldnt have noticed

I listened to the shoot out on TalkSPORT whilst walking the dog, and they commented that Pope starts a foot behind the line and times it so he’s coming forward at the right time. I can see some people taking umbrage at that I’m sure, but it’s within the rules

Good idea is this. He’ll be narrowing down the angle doing that
