About time too
A bit of sense at last.
. Local lockdowns exemption for childcare
Local lockdown restrictions in England will be eased to allow people to look after children under the age of 14, or vulnerable adults, from outside their household. Announcing the change, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "For many, informal childcare arrangements are a lifeline without which they couldn't do their jobs." The move will, for example, allow grandparents to look after grandchildren, even in areas where households can't mix.

Re: About time too
Well it's only practical if the government went employees to go to work to kickstart the economy, then their dependants will have to be cared for by somebody, and often that's grandparents or other family members, this should have been clarified months ago though, but they've finally got the message, and common-sense has prevailed.

Re: About time too
I fully understand the thinking behind the decision but surely the grand-parents are the ones that need the protection by separation.

Perhaps the grandparents think they're old enough to make their own minds up.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 11:27 pmI fully understand the thinking behind the decision but surely the grand-parents are the ones that need the protection by separation.

If we hadn't then the local hospital would have been missing a doctor

Re: About time too
Which parents of young children will want to put their elderly parents family at risk though?
Health of vulnerable loved ones comes way before a few quid saving on childcare fees, or a few less pounds in wages.
Wouldn't dream of putting my gran in that situation, kids are illness/germ carriers at best of times, certainly wouldn't be allowing them near any vulnerable family member after a day or week at school regardless

Re: About time too
Agree it’s common sense along with only allowing table service in pubs and then being policed more closely.

What happens when the paid childcare suddenly becomes unavailable through illness for a few daysMACCA wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:52 amWhich parents of young children will want to put their elderly parents family at risk though?

We're not classed as vulnerable either.
More chance of somebody getting seriously ill because the doctor isn't able to go to work, than me looking after a 3yr old who doesn't go to school. Nothing to do with loss of wages.

Re: About time too
So have we, but it's been legal up until today.
Anyway, another day, another U-Turn, so we can continue to pick up the grandchildren, and our key-worker children can continue to work.
Incidentally, why is there an assumption by some, (not you Grumps) that grandparents are old and vulnerable?

I think some people think of grandparents as frail old granny's, whereas in reality the majority are probably under 60,certainly the ones who look after the really young kids
Re: About time too
There are also many healthy folk over 70 who do the same duties but the stats are not good for them if they get Covid-however I suspect most won't mind pegging it if it keeps their off spring safe and well. Even the over 90's have more than a 50:50 chance of surviving Covid-so whilst it may be gloomy and is not all doom and gloom-yet!

Re: About time too
At 80 years old, you have about a 1 in 10 chance of dying in the next year. What does it become if you see your family in that time? 1 in 9?

Re: About time too
I think that that stat. goes back to the initial outbreak when it was rife in care homes. A lot of lessons have been learnt since then, and as knowledge of the virus has grown the treatment is more effective, so if we're looking for good news, then I suspect that the over 90s now have a much better than 50: 50 chance, even if they get it.
