These probably don't count, as where I was doesn't have an Autumn, but they were taken in October, so I am counting it. I managed to maintain a week in Kenya for some photography "Work"

Here's a few from the trip - hope you enjoy them.

1) Wildebeest Migration - between 30,000 and 100,000 animals crossing the mara river for well over an hour. A life ambition realised.

Image1 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

2) Leopard Cubs - 3 months old - a few seconds of them sitting on a branch looking at me, looking at them, before they tumbled down and continued to play in the undergrowth. A precious experience.

Image3 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

3) Artistic Giraffes - playing with the overexposure, the diffferent oranges and patterns really help with this photo

Image11 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

4) Zebras in a panic - we watched the 5 Cheetah Boy coalition hunting Zebras all day, which understandably made them nervous. Trying to find some standing still for half a second whilst the herd moved around them led to this image - evaporating zebra

Image6 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

5) The afore mentioned 5 Cheetah Boy coalition at first light. Getting all 10 eyes into the photo was essential, and then having their eyes lit up to reveal that liquid amber colour was an added bonus. Rare to see them all so close and sat up looking attentive

Image10 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

6) Lions at sunrise - wide angle - taken leaning out of the safari vehicle, anchored by my ankles on the seat back to get low to be below eye level of the 2 huge male lions. All good, until the one in front, who is only 20 yards away gives you a look.... then it's a scramble back - quickly - very quickly

Image4 by Dan Heap, on Flickr

7) Giraffes under a stormy sunset - will a subject get lost, or does a small subject set the scene. I think the latter, some may think the former....

It's in Pittenweem mate, they put it up in the summer, think it's a shoutout to the fishermen returning to the village hence a fisherman's wife and child looking out to see waiting for his return...its a beautiful statue.

Some stunning photographs on this thread from a good number of posters. I have to comment on the ones from Dan in Kenya though, absolutely stunning.

Dande. What’s the story with the Cheetahs? Am I right in saying the fathers never stick around and once old enough their mother also leave? They just simply working together to get a meal?

Thanks Tony - appreciated.

Dyched - Cheetahs tend to be solitary animals, males and females meet to mate, and then separate again. That means that the females will raise the young. It is common for them to have up to 6 young, but the survival rate is very low. They get a very tough time from other big cats, and especially hyenas. The adult female will kick the young males out after about 12 months, but will tolerate young females for longer.

It's not uncommon for males to form coalitions, but this one is slightly strange, in that it' as big as it is, with 5 of them, and has lasted for so long. They have been together for 4 years, and it's estimated the oldest brothers are approaching 7 years of age. Female Cheetahs in the wild live on average to 12 years of age, but males average just 8 years, mainly due to fights for territory causing injuries. They're always spectacular to see, especially when hunting, when they fan out from a single line into a wide reaching fan. It's difficult to photograph them, as they can each be going after individual prey, and you never know which one will get taken.

Apparently not. 21st December is the official start of winter.

Depends on who you listen too I suppose, some folks consider 1st December as the start of Winter, well others state it's later in December. :)

Whatever there's certainly been plenty of wintery weather in Scotland this week, even a sprinkling of snow yesterday.

I guess I'd call it winter, too. We have a covering of snow here in Norfolk. I quoted 21st December as the official start.

On the BBC News on Dec 1st they mentioned it being the first day of Winter and then qualified it. I can’t remember how. Must be different interpretations.

I'm going to have to learn how to post pic's.

I've just put up a bird feeder on a birch tree outside my window. I've used a good quality sunflower hearts / suet / mealworm mix.
This morning I've had Blue tits, coal tits, great tits, nuthatch, chaffinches, blackbirds, hedge sparrows, wren, robin & a tree creeper all on the tree and adjacent tree at the same time.
I know it's not a record as I haven't seen a woodpecker, greenfinch or goldfinch yet, but nevertheless quite impressive.
