Fantastic news, his improvement in the last few seasons has been massive.

You could see the quality when he came on at Millwall, the left footed ball to Lowton in the second goal build up for example.

I assume you know, but as he’s only 30, do you have an issue with one of our most consistent performers being given a new deal.

What was he £3m from villa? Shows you don't need to spend big to get quality, great news westy signed up, great on the pitch and obviously a character in the dressing room, got him for his best years I'd say at 30.

My first thought was 'how old is he?' - It's not 'will' he be granted... I thought he was older than 30, and also felt like he'd been here longer than 3 and a half years.

Club put out info like this when I'm awaiting the big event of the week - the Tesco delivery. I'll get something written for the main site.

Outstanding news on both fronts - everything I ordered was delivered and what a good bit of news getting Westwood signed up. I believe Cork is likely to be next.

I think Benson Thomas and Dunne need to be tied down if they are showing the promise commented on by quite a few posters on here, as the benefits would be clear for all and Boysie to see viz lowering the age of the squad!!!!

Would be great if we gave Bardsley another three years too. The squad might not benefit much beyond next season but hearing and maybe seeing Boysie have apoplexy would be fun.

Yes, he will be a bit on the old side for a regular PL player, but he has other qualities besides his energetic midfield displays.
I like him. I wonder if, given his comments about the club, if he could stay on as a coach? He seems the right type to stay in the game.

Blimey! people moan when we don't tie our players to long-term contracts, and then as soon as we do secure the services of one of our most committed and reliable performers, some folks still find time to gripe.

It's been a really good week, and the feel good factor is returning to the club once again.

Blooding youngsters at Leicester (albeit in defeat) and Millwall in an impressive victory, Ash Barnes getting some useful minutes with the u23's, talk of a takeover, and now getting Stephens in the building, and ensuring we secure Westy's services for a good few years.

3 points against the Saints tomorrow would round things off nicely.

I understand and appreciate were you are coming from, but I don't have a problem with us rewarding older players who have proven themselves and given a lot to the club with new contracts. That makes a lot of sense to me, if they put in the performances they stay with us for the long term. Do right by us and we do right by them.

What I have a problem with is failing to fill the gaps in the squad that inevitably open up with young players who could be expected to have longer futures with the club and generate revenue by increasing in value. If we keep filling those gaps with older players, like we have been doing, then we are going to suffer one way or the other.

A new contract for a player who is in the later years of their career should be something to strive for. It should be a well deserved reward for services rendered to the club. It shouldn't be a means of making up for poor recruitment performance in the shape of cheap emergency sticking plasters at the expense of a long term financial strategy ( irrespective of whether those players can still put in good performances at the moment ).

Westy fully deserved his new contract in my eyes and I'm a staunch advocate of lowering the age of the squad.
