Re: Ross Barkley
Looks like Lampard is sorting the Chelsea squad out properly now and getting rid of those who he doesn’t want.
Wonder who else is available?
As an aside I wonder if Dean Smith is looking to play Barkley alongside Grealish or this is the precursor to his sale...?

Re: Ross Barkley
Good signing for them. When Villa stayed up by the skin of their teeth it was clear they would be much stronger this year.

Re: Ross Barkley
It is a good signing. I think Smith had said he wanted another player in who could take some of the pressure off Grealish as far as creativity was concerned. I don't think Villa will struggle this season. They have started well although they haven't played anybody to truly test them yet, this weekend will be interesting they play Liverpool on Sunday.
Re: Ross Barkley
Excellent signing. Villa done far better business in this window. Expect them to stay up.

Re: Ross Barkley
Pity has wages would blow us out of the water, Loftus-Cheek too
Re: Ross Barkley
Far from convinced about this one.
There’s a reason he’s nearly 27 and out on loan at Aston Villa. A lot of promise with Barkley but he’s not really progressed from when he was a teenager and doesn’t seem to have much game intelligence.
And Villa already have one midfielder who doesn’t like passing to anybody. I’m not sure their team can accommodate two.

Re: Ross Barkley
Watching them the other day (I know against Fulmam, not the best to merit them on) but I thought. “If they can keep McGinn and Grealish fit for 95% of their games against teams outside the top 6/8 they’ll stay up, easily”. Now with Barkley in their too. They’ve got a match winning midfield.

Wouldn’t be the first time that a player has signed a new contract in order to increase their value and then be sold shortly afterwards...

I’d have been delighted with Barkley, he’s an excellent player! Can’t get into Chelsea midfield, would walk into most premier league starting 11

Re: Ross Barkley
Frank Lampard's greatest managerial strength is spending money. He shows signs of losing it. Personally I think it was too big a position too soon. Got a lot of respect last season because he brought several youngsters through and Chelsea were blocked from spending in the transfer market. Having spent over £200m he will come under immense pressure
Re: Ross Barkley
He really isn’t.
He isn’t even a top player, never mind needing the second “top”.
He made his pro debut 10 years ago. Since then he’s made 193 starts and a further 67 appearances from the bench - so 260 appearances in all club competitions in a decade. He’s scored 40 goals.
So that’s 4 goals a season for a decade as an attacking midfielder. A goal every six and a half games. I can only get his assist record in the Premier League, but it’s about 1 every 8 games.
There’s a reason Chelsea have let him go. There’s also a reason he’s only going to Aston Villa as well.

A good player definitely for a midtable to outside top 6 side, I feel he never really got the chance at chelsea thru not being selected because of injury or loss of form or simply inferior to what else was available for selection coinciding when we was available himself for selection.

Re: Ross Barkley
Just the type of player we're crying out for.
Re: Ross Barkley
The lad is a bit of a d-ick to be honest and not half as good as he thinks he is in his head.
But Villa do look stronger and already appear to be playing with more confidence. They have McGinn back which is massive for them and Matty Cash and Watkins both look quality signings - as does Martinez in the nets and with Heaton they now have good keepers.
Ross Barkley won’t play every week - because he can’t. He doesn’t keep himself fit enough and picks up injuries easily. But when he does play I can see him scoring half a dozen goals at least as he does have a very good strike with both feet and Villa do make a lot of chances.

Re: Ross Barkley
Ask yourself this :-
1. Is Villa’s defence good enough to have a midfield of McGinn, Barkley and Grealish in it? I’m not seeing too much tackling and protection of the back line in there.
2. Does Barkley’s goal every six games and assist every 8 dramatically improve their attack enough to drastically improve them?
Somebody is going to have to do something they’ve never done before in their career in order for this signing to make a huge difference. I’m not saying they won’t - it’s very possible they may - but I wouldn’t be betting on it.
We’ve seen Barkley in a mid level Premier League team before. One he supported as well, not just one he’d been leant to. There were large patches where he couldn’t even get in their team.

Re: Ross Barkley
I’m not saying he is worth £100k a week and I don’t think he is the type of player or character needed at Burnley either.
But if he does score half a dozen goals and a few assists with Villa’s deep pockets / complete lack of financial management of their budgets then that kind of contribution in a season is probably good enough for them and should mean they are not in the relegation trouble they were last year.
I’d be more worried for Villa if they stay up and then pay £20m for him and a 4 year contract on £5m a year as I’d bet good money on it he will spend most of it out of the team.

Re: Ross Barkley
flatters to deceive I think, could be a top player but certainly is not in my mind at the moment and is not really good for the England team either. Which is somewhat supported by him not getting into any of the top 8 PL teams let alone top 4 or 6. Yes I know he has been in a top 4 squad but there is a reason he is being allowed to go on loan, simply not good enough for that level, perhaps this will shake him up a little and help him realize his potential.
However, I would have liked him to come to BFC and I think he would help us improve, just as I think he will for AV, which makes the bottom 3 more difficult to pick by the time the window is closed.

That’s a low bar you have set there Steve !
If he was that good he would firstly not be leaving and secondly not going to Villa.
If he hadn’t done the dirty on his boyhood club he’d be going there or Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester etc - teams challenging for top 6 or 8.
But each to his own and don’t you be doing a Wrongo and bringing my post back up when he scores 25 goals and signs for Barca !!

Show pony. Flatters to deceive. File with Jack Wilshere and, to a lesser extent, Tom Ince. Sort of signing that gets managers the sack.
Bizarrely, I still think he's a good signing for them! Go figure. Even I can't understand it.
