Why is it so different against Liverpool?

They've got a better forward line and defence than Man City yet we seem to have more of a chance.

Because they don't play like City, simple as that. Two totally different teams playing two totally different ways meaning two totally different kinds of games.

I personally think City are better, I know the league table doesn’t lie but I just think there are

The way we are allows the opposition more possession on purpose which means teams that play the controlled possession game (City and Arsenal for exMple) do well against us.

Liverpool are more direct exploiting space and its harder for them against a compact well drilled side like we are. They hD a massive slice of luck against us at home last year to get their foothold.

When we played at Anfield last season our watching group via video call were chatting and I said that no matter what happened, Liverpool wouldn't do to us what Man City had. It's a bloody hard watch sometimes playing against City as much as you want to admire the departed David Silva or Kevin de Bruyne.

Exactly. Their movement and technique in the middle is too good for our discipline and framework. Its better than Liverpool. They break quickly too with precision. We aren't the only side that struggle against them

Mentioned this in the match thread, but the way they play makes them our nemesis.

Liverpool have been better at grinding out results but I think City are the better side, some of the football is ridiculous, DeBruyne is the best player in the world for me.

A City fan asked me this exact question. His opinion is that Dyche writes off the City games before kick off.

Liverpool are a far better all round team than City IMO, I think they'll finish way ahead of them again this year.

I don’t think we have any weaknesses as such against Liverpool. When you look at their game on the all, it’s easy to stop. Well not easy but it’s what they do off the ball that causes teams trouble most of the time. Teams that want to play out from the back struggle massively against them. Their pressing game is insanely effective. But against us it’s pretty much pointless. That in turn keeps their players deeper and more compact. Not allowing them to stretch the game and make it open.

City are just brilliant in the opposition half. They can play anyway they want, they will find a way through. The best way to stop them is attack. All out attack. If you don’t score, you’ll get beat by a large margin. But now and again they’ll get beat.

It's so obvious.. you can see it in the attitude of the players.

Liverpool tend to press higher up the pitch which suits our style better.

City struggled against Leicesters pace and lets face it Mr Dyche likes his workhorses not racehorses and IMO at prem level the best teams all have pace in their team

Dyche doesnt have 50 million to spend on one player, or 200 million on four.

We should just boot them.up.in the air really!!! Kick the cr@p out of them!!! Haha

Against City with their short passing skills you need to be quick over 2 yards to intercept the ball.
Even if you try and make a scrappy game they just get the ball under control and start again.

Liverpool are more about breaking at pace, which we can combat to a degree by defending deep.

Poor squad this year and will finish way behind Liverpool. Let's not forget Liverpool have played "title contenders" Chelsea and won them with ease and a "rejuvenated" arsenal and beat them comfortably and scored 4 v Leeds when not on it all in their first 3 league games. As for city well...

City and Liverpool are both brilliant teams. Even at our best we'd struggle against both and likely lose comfortably.

City are more ruthless than Liverpool though and it's evident from recent years. For the last three seasons in the PL, where Liverpool and City have been at a similar standard, City have scored 303 goals, Liverpool 258. A gap of 45 goals. A big difference over three seasons.

For a team like ours, built mainly on a solid defence, that extra firepower and ruthlessness to turn a comfortable win into a hammering makes a big difference, which is why we've struggled to contain City to a respectable score to the same extent as we have against Liverpool.

Liverpool have probably had a better defence, certainly recently than City, but simply put, we don't see enough of the ball against City to make that count, so the gap doesn't close any there.

Also think City at their very best (although not born out over the last 12/18 months) are still slightly better. Add all that together and I think that's why we tend to give Liverpool a slightly tougher run for their money than we do against City.

City have been battering us 5-0 and the like for yours. Way before Pep and the sexy slick game they play now. Even when they were shoite they still pumped us

It’s just “jinx” - you can’t stop the moonlight.

During the game last night I thought the same question about why don’t Liverpool hump us consistently in the same way, but I didn’t want to jinx it by posting.

Great!

This is a very good thread. They have become a bogey team like Arsenal. Against Arsenal we have been unlucky in recent times but against City our gameplan just does not work at all. As we only have one way of playing it’s the same outcome every time and has become a bit boring. Normally when we get to 3 we implode and it becomes 5. Think we need to have more a go at City as the defence is the only ‘weak’ part.

It isn't. We have a slightly better record in the PL against Man City than we do against Liverpool.

Liverpool let you play (or try to play), so you can attack them. City do niggly fouls when they lose the ball to stop you from getting anywhere.
