Labour lost 5 out of 11 seats they defended in 2019, leaving them with 22/45 seats, one short of a majority .... the other party's put together an unlikely co-alition of Conservative, Lib Dem, Burnley & Padiham Indies, UKIP and one Independent. The Greens wouldn't get involved, only on a vote by vote basis. This only happened because Labour would not work with any other party to govern ...

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, although Labour must be relieved that May's elections were cancelled, as they'd probably have been further reduced in number ...

As soon as a ward councillor decides they won't work with other parties for the good of the town they should be relieved of duties and replaced by someone who will.

Depends on whose idea of the 'good of the town' you are looking at though. And what if the coalition you agreed to join turns out to be a complete set of weirdoes and tossers. Politicians are, in theory, elected on their beliefs and ideas. In practice most are voted for on the party platform they are linked to. Unfortunately, people vote for local politicians on the basis of what their parties do and say on a national platform or in parliament rather than what is best for their locality.
