Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
We knew Hendricks was going but we also need bodies for competition/injuries in midfield so why not make the deal pre season ? Nobody else was interested in him ? He could have hit the ground running with pre season with the boss and players and also fitness and our playing style could have been ironed out.
Or was he 5th in dyches list and it took us that long to find out that the top 4 choices did not want to come or we could not afford them ???
Can't believe if SD said to board at the final whistle of the last game of last season "we need to replace hendricks, there's a aging player who i have admired for a while who's not a regular for his current club and at 31 will fit the bill" and from there it took weeks to sort out ??

Dunno, ask Brighton why they didn't sell him to us weeks ago instead.
Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
I think he was hoping to sign players called Smith and Jones because they would be easier to spell. Maybe that's the reason for the pursuit of Wilson? Or should that be Willsons?

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
Its Stephens and Hendrick.
Hendrick > Stephens
Lennon > Brownhill
Puts us with one less player who can play on the right. In other words we still need a right winger. A natural one.

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
Perhaps he didn't know he was surplus to requirements at Brighton weeks ago. Perhaps Brighton hadn't decided to let him go weeks ago. Perhaps their transfer fee target was excessive to our eyes weeks ago. Perhaps we had other preferences weeks ago. Perhaps the player wanted to see if other clubs wanted him weeks agoo. None of us know but all five perhapses had to 'align' (to use SD speak) for us to complete the transferkenyon6923 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 12:27 amWe knew Hendricks was going but we also need bodies for competition/injuries in midfield so why not make the deal pre season ? We hadn't searched down the back of the settee for the cash to make up the fee.

Why did we even sign him? Not good enough
Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
Not sure we should have bought Stephens at all.
We should have bought a rite back and rite whinger weeks ago though.

There are more than enough right whingers to be found on here for any club. Though BFC do still need to get a decent scapegoat signed.

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
These threads from this poster are getting a bit tedious - and can someone tell him it's Hendrick.
Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
We probably saved a few quid haggling the price down.
We certainly saved on wages by getting him in later rather than in July.
He might have been plan F or something further down the list.
There's plenty of reasons we waited, most will be financially motivated, and rightly so.
We cant just go throwing a million pounds around without serious and careful consideration, we dont want to be the next Bolton!

Presumably doing it deliberately in a failed attempt at being amusing/controversial. As you say, exceptionally tedious now, time to grow up.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 10:56 amThese threads from this poster are getting a bit tedious - and can someone tell him it's Hendrick.

I genuinely think we need a sticky at the top of the forum on how each player's name is spelt.superdimitri wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 1:22 amIts Stephens and Hendrick.

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
Dont think there has ever been a player that has cause more spelling problems than Hendrick. Strange really. We didn’t have this problem with Papadopoulos and Jutkiewicz.

In fairness you have to be very careful with the likes of those two so you make sure you get them right. One of my favourites though is Ing's with the apostrophe.
Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
I've seen people put the wrong sort of "d" in that Icelandic bloke's name! CT gets it right but most of us don't bother.

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
No, I'm not sure that he's even capable of replacing Jeff Hendrick and he's a bit too old anyway; I accept that once the Man City subsidy ended, we were never going to be able to accommodate Joe Hart's salary requirements within the club's wage structure, but this is an area where we can't allow 'little old Burnley' thinking to hold sway. Mike Garlick and Mike Rigg are giving their best off the field, but what we really ought to be signing is a Premier League ready scapegoat, or if that's beyond our means, then let's at least get someone in who's showing promise in the Championship and is young enough to show a decent resale profit should he develop into an International standard whipping boy - No foul ups, his contract will need to include a really small release fee and 50%+ sell on clause. I'm not sure what formal coaching staff we have for this discipline but as we all know that MG's doing nothing but sitting around counting/pocketing profits, whilst MR's sitting around doing nothing at all, they could surely find time to draw on their ever-growing experience and do the coaching themselves?

Getting one players name wrong, it can happen.

I stopped reading at 'hendricks'. If you can't get his name right after being a Burnley player for 4 years I can't be arsed reading the post. The same goes for people who call Chris wood 'chris woods'.

Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
People need to remember we are now coming up towards the 11th anniversary of being informed we were 10 years behind Bolton. They stayed up when we were relegated 10 years ago so we don't have long left before we fall onto the slippery slope to (almost) oblivion. Our only hope of avoiding that slippery slope is the debt free situation we are in compared to the massive debts they were accruing by living way beyond their means.MACCA wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 10:59 amWe probably saved a few quid haggling the price down.

It's only just over 30 years ago we nearly didn't have a club, how anyone can question what these hard working board members we have baffles me.
They pump in their hard earned money to keep us afloat, there's many that often forget that.
Just think where we would be if Mr Garlick hadnt taken over when he did, it's hardly like he has done it for his own gain.

I believe the delay was due to confusion we approached Gary Stevens, but after tracking him down found out he was long retired. We next approached Trevor Steven, but he failed the medical before turning to Stephens.

On social media, they don't know that a name deserves an uppercase letter. "dale Stephens" seems quite common. I don't think I've ever thought about spelling the first name in lowercase, but then trying to make up for it by using uppercase on the surname.buzzclarets79 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 2:39 pmIs it me or does anyone else totally cringe when our own so called fans can't spell the players names correctly? That's autocorrect. Dale is a word in its own right but Stephens is only ever a name.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 5:13 pmOn social media, they don't know that a name deserves an uppercase letter. Re: Why could we have not bought Stevens weeks ago ?
does SD tell the recruitment team he needs say a right back, a centre half, a right winger and let's them get on with it - or does he name names - just for example trippier, Dawson or Worrall and Wilson ??
