Lost this little chap today , devastated .

Ouch, I’m sorry for you pal, horrible when your pets die.

I remember coming home from Burnley College when I must have been 18.

My mate waited outside while I went in to drop off my bag.

My mum was crying on the settee and turned and said, "Notice anything missing?" - straight away my heart sank, as we'd had Brandy from when I was 3 to when I was 18, so grew up with her. My Dad was keeping busy by doing some DIY work around the back.

I was gutted.

So I know how you feel.

It almost feels like losing a family member, when you’ve spent all that time with your dog. I know some will disagree but they really do become a huge part of your life.

100%. You see them every day and they're always there for you. I've always thought if somebody doesn't like dogs, avoid them.

So sorry for your loss. Our deepest condolences. Remember the little guy with fond, happy memories.

Feel so sorry for you, been in the same position myself.

Small dog , huge character, Kaspa , yes it was a compromise to Frank Casper . He had a good life and has been a great friend to all the family

He was 14 and half , had a lung condition for the last few months and went downhill rapidly this past week , had to pluck up the courage to call the vet out this morning, such a hard thing to do .

Mate, so sorry for your loss.....losing a pet is never an easy thing to cope with....RIP little fella x

Condolences Joey and family. Been there and it hurts.

Dogs are wonderful. They give you unconditional love. They can’t hide their emotions whatever their mood. Sorry for your loss.

That's a good age for a dog - not that it will make you feel less sad, of course.

My mum and dad went to the vets when I was at college and when the vet told my mum she had to be put down, my mum dropped the lead on the table and had to leave the room, she was that upset. She said Brandy kept looking up at her as if to say, "I know what's coming".

Like somebody mentioned, dogs are a member of the family and there's a massive hole lost when they're no longer around.

That little chap has obviously left a big hole, I feel for you.

Very sad losing a pet especially a dog but I'd recommend getting another dog and I'd recommend a loveable Cavachon i know it would help fix a broken

We are on our 5th rescue dog, so have had to go through the loss of a loved pet four times. It is horrendous and I think only a dog owner will understand how you feel.
I really feel for you mate. We lasted a week when our last dog died before we rescued another. I hope you can think about getting another dog, as I guarantee it will help you get over the loss more quickly, plus you have that discipline in your life of having to get up to take them out.

It’s hard to explain how it feels sometimes. There’s a post on this thread suggesting it’s almost like losing a member of the family but the word almost can be removed. Pets are members of the family.

Some good friends of mine went through the same thing two weeks ago. I knew they would get another dog and they did almost immediately although they said it’s not possible to get one from a rescue centre at the moment.

I’m not a dog owner myself but I know from friends and family members just how devastating it is to say goodbye. You can only console yourself that you gave him or her a good life.

In time frank it does....but I havent replaced the Jack Russell we had up to his 18th year this ten years.

When you get a dog usually as a puppy you know 1 day that the day will come, arguably it's harder than just getting a rescue dog & eventually saying goodbye due to the length you've both been attached, both circumstances are far from pleasant, anyway condolences.

I don't think it matters at all whether you get a dog as a puppy or adopt a dog when he's 10 years old, or whether it's a rescue centre dog. It's a dog, you become attached to it and it becomes part of the family.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier that I bought with my first wage when I was 17, in 2005. She's nearly 16 now. They are the best animals on Earth.

I agree, thats why I used the word arguably, you can equally mourn & be overcome with grief regardless of how & when you obtained the dog.

Lost both of mine in the last 2 years, aged 13 and 15 1/2, devastating, but if you are a dog person, get another one quickly like we did, you can never replace, but it does help.

It’s really upsetting losing a pet - we lost our dog 15 months ago and it’s only this last week that we’ve finally got another.

I think they all are. Something to think about in the coming weeks, giving another dog a great home and to be loved.

I always guessed it might be a bit sad but thought people perhaps made a bit of a fuss when a pet died - until I got one.
Absolutely a member of the family, from day one.
Always pleased to see you and has the ability to make a crap day seem better, a real companion.
Dogs will be your mate forever - just try locking your wife and kids and your dog in the boot of your car for an hour and then see who is pleased to see you when you open up.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Anyone who has lost a pet will fully understand how you are feeling - when we lost our last one we decided no more pets as the heartbreak is too much. Ironically today we have been dog sitting and between the showers on the Kent coast I have managed over 17,000 steps on the Fatbit whilst enjoying having a dog in the house. Just hoping my good turn has its’ rewards for the Clarets !

I said I would never get another cat after my ginger Tom passed away. He was a real member of our family for 15 years. 6 months later and we got a lovely calico cat. So glad we did , she is lovely. Feel for you mate.

We have a 4 year old Westiepoo that we got from 8 weeks old. In fact we saw her when only a few days old. I'd never had a dog before..always was a cat person but she really is a member of the family. Cheeky character, playful, loving. The thought of the day we have to part isn't nice. She really would leave a big hole in our lives.

That’s what we have, he’s about 3.5. His nature is like no dog I’ve ever known. Greedy little get though

Each of them are unique personalities Joey. Give it time, you’ll find a new pal that won’t replace him, but will help you make new memories to help with the old ones.

Looks like he was a typical terrier. Yes I will sit on the settee and yes you will let me ! Try and think of the happy times

As said above they are family. We lost Buddy 2 years ago and he was unique. In time you'll remember the good times and we ended up with two more who are equally unique. We never lose thoughts for Buddy and think of him daily but we have pictures, videos and pride of place picture of him over the fire. They never leave our hearts.

I lost my 11yr old SBT, “Tank” to cancer. We had such a friendship - it broke my heart. I swore I would never be able to replicate that and said I would never have another dog.

12 years later, with kids pestering, I relented. Another SBT. I can’t compare ‘em but I love Archie as much as I loved Tank.

Don’t be frightened or worried about getting another dog. They give you so much happiness.

Total sympathy for you. Hadn't had a dog since childhood until this August (40 years), decided to take the plunge on a 5 month old Maltipoo puppy. He's now such an integrated part of the family that I would so miss him, even after such a short time together, love him to bits.
Dreading the day he's no longer with us, hopefully a long time off, and he'll probably outlive me anyway.

Give the wife and the dog a backhander, lock them both in the shed overnight....

In the morning, let them out and see which one is happy to see you. That’s PROPER unconditional love.
