Well Pope has to have a word with himself or he and we will be at the bottom of the championship, next year.

I won't rate or criticise individual players when the manager gets it so wrong playing two uncoordinated players
in Wood and Barnes, It is simply like playing with ten men. Shocking.

Pope 3 - worst game for us. Awful error and never looked convincing
Bardsley 5 - at least showed a bit of fight and drive
Long 3 - absolutely nowhere near the required standard
Tarkowski 4 - clearly still rusty and evidently needs Mee back
Taylor 4 - totally done by ASM and ineffective going forward
Brownhill 4 - he is a centre midfielder
Westwood 5 - good goal, not much else
Stephens 4 - safe passing, hopefully just rusty, v slow
McNeil 3 - needs a rest desperately
Wood 4 - nothing to work on
Barnes 3 - we’re a worse team and play poorer football when he starts

JBG 4 - nothing

You mean the two strikers who have turned in a hell of a lot of good performances and scored plenty of goals playing together.

I'm not challenging that, but do you have the stats that show how many goals they've scored when partnered together, and how many when they either play alongside someone else, or upfront alone?

Without looking them up no, but they've had two unbelievably productive spells when they've played together, one in 2018 and another in 2019 and they'd scored a few goals between them last season before Barnes suffered his injury.

The football always turns horrendous when they start together. Sometimes we graft out wins but when we play one of J-Rod and sometimes Vydra who get it to feet its much better to watch. We just go long to Wood and Barnes when they play

There should be a ban on playing Barnes and Wood in the same team. The hoofball it leads to is frightening.

He's very busy in his private life just now but he's fine, I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago.

With Lascelles missing it was the right tactic, sadly the delivery in was poor.
So many things about the line up, tactics, performance that was wrong, but you can't blame Ash after all he's done for this club. He's only 2 games in from being out for 6 months, do you not think he deserves a bit of support.

We're lacking a leader on the pitch
Lacking a cool head under pressure
Lacking that bit of luck
All leading to that lack of confidence every team needs

It isn't any individuals fault

I certainly was not criticising Barnes or Wood as individual players. In fact Barnes looked sharp when he got the chance to be involved and made the best cross of the match from the right wing. The hit it long and hope system they were playing in gave them little chance to support each other, or make something work.

Pope - 3
Bardsley - 5
Long - 4
Tarkowski 5
Taylor 5
Brownhill - 5
Westwood - 6*
Stephens - 4
McNeil - 5
Wood - 5
Barnes - 3

Gudmundsson - 5

If we're going to have to go with what we've got after the window shuts then we desperately need a change of formation and a holy intervention to ensure Brady and JBG can stay fit and find form. As much as I understand the cult hero status of Ashley Barnes, there isn't a chance in hell him and Wood should start up front together. Wood carries the more natural goal threat IMO and therefore it should be him + 1 of Vydra or Rodriguez if we're going with 2 up top. That line up, that formation, looks workmanlike and excellent when we're on it, but when we're off like we clearly have been so far this season, we look absolutely woeful.
For me Dwight needs releasing from the burden of tracking back, if he's our one creative light (he is) then we need to let him do it. I'd stick with a back 4, have Westwood and Brownhill in a 2 with Brady/Pieters and JBG out wide with McNeil playing off Wood. I think he has the technical ability to carry out the role.
Obviously a signing or 2 would help but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. I'd be happy with just a winger.
