If Ben Mee not fit for next game Jimmy Dunne must play

Kev is 30, there can be no improvement to come

Dunne deserves a chance

Ok to fill in for the odd game here and there but not starting a number of matches. The fact he is is down to our p*ss poor recruitment. His display today was not good enough like most of the team.

He's had decent games for us in the past but we have conceded identical goals in all our league games. The back 4 have been all over the place, Taylor has started the season very poorly too.

A good player, but nowhere near good enough for a PL defence and when you see the look on his face during games, he actually knows it!

Not keen on the threads targeting individuals, all were poor tonight, I don’t think it’s really necessary to start threads on individuals performances

Edit: probably just me being soft because I’ve not had a beer for once on a Saturday

Usually does okay for the first few game when he comes into the side, but give him an extended run in the side and he shows that he's nowhere near the standard required.

Unfortunately he's carried on from where he left off after the Brighton game.

He's League One standard. Fine here as fourth choice (in that he barely needs to play) anything more than that though is too much for him. Nowhere near good enough to be playing regularly at this level

Long is a great squad man. He knows he’s not good enough to be anything other than a fill in, and doesn’t kick up a fuss about that.

The issue is when we sadly have to rely on him longer term. He was very poor tonight, not alone in that but it did stick out I’m sorry to say.

Dunne has done nothing wrong either so far and Bobby Thomas looked absolutely exceptional in the Cup - but the reality is we need a chuffing centre back. It’s been obvious all summer, it’s more obvious now than ever. If Mee isn’t imminently back it’s a real problem.

He looks to me like a guy who can't believe he's being paid all that money and been given that job and that level of responsibility because in his heart he knows he really doesn't warrant it, especially when he looks at the players around him. It's like the young guy who was running the nuclear reactor rest at Chernobyl. Responsibility thrust upon him from above way beyond his capabilities and we know how that game ended don't we??

I said it after the cup games, Dunne wins EVERYTHING in the air - we should use him in the same way we used Crouch, throw him up top if we are chasing the game - he'll win far more in the air than Vydra will !!

Not so much knocking him but he's been in the team now for the last nine league games since Ben Mee was injured and we can't afford that. Our record overall with him in the team is anything but good over the years.

Dreadful. Lightweight, bullied, poor distribution, makes our best player play out of position, as above looks like he’s amazed nothing bad has happened after every attack, heads it straight up instead of away, moves like quo from the Northampton 5 goal win in 91-92 and has that stupid flick of his hair on his forehead.

That being said for the odd game he’s a body for backup. Nothing more. He’s had enough chances to prove he can do it. I’d NEVER play him again in front of a promising kid.

My feelings exactly. A good player and would walk into any Championship team imo, but at the level we are at you simply can't play him week in week out and expect to win too many games.

He may be 30, but he shows a clear lack of experience. He has spent his career on our bench, when he could’ve forged one in the Championship (or even higher) easily if he’d wanted out. I respect his commitment, but he never has been, and never will be the answer.

Exactly. If he was 4th or 5th choice at this level, 100 minutes a season, fine. 1000 minutes - we will really struggle. 2000 minutes - we are down.

A side of our stature should have 2 backups at CB costing £5m-£10m. That we don’t have one (or have one who refuses to play) is jointly down to the manager and chairman. The chairman wouldn’t have baulked at a couple of £5m signings over the last couple of years. Had to be Dyche who decided his priorities were elsewhere. It is frustrating because it was so obvious and avoidable.

He should be playing for Blackpool, not Burnley.
It was just about acceptable to have him as 4th choice in the championship, for him to be playing regular games for us in this league is frightening.

He is a terrible defender, he cannot actually defend very well.
He makes far too many errors and poor choices, there cannot be too many games we win when he is in the side.

Thankfully Sean knows he should be 4th choice at best, and touch wood get the funds to bring in a new 3rd choice CB.

Let's not this become all about Kevin Long, we have a manager who appears to be picking a team and playing a system that is pretty much making a point to the hierarchy.

8 wins from 37 games in the Premier League (stat is probably worse when only starts are counted, but I can’t find that).

The biggest disappointment of my football life was turning up in Athens and seeing Long (and Gibson) starting. Sadly, and I’m not knocking him either, that means we’ll be up against it at this level.

Might get games with some of those at the bottom, but wouldn't be a regular starter.

I’d just add that it isn’t guaranteed yet that Tarky won’t be gone in 2 days.

We need at least one CB now. If Tarky goes, we need two.

We rely totally on our defensive solidity. Without that we will ship many goals and won’t score enough at the other end. In short, we’re gone if that happens.

I was once in holiday years ago and got chatting to a lad at the bar who was an ex pro at Northampton. He remembered that game and played in it. Said Quow was a great lad but limited footballer and he was their PFA rep. I said I’d never seen Mike Conroy outpace anyone and he absolutely rinsed him 😂😂

Also said The Turf was v intimidating to come and play at

You mean “always goes for experience” even if it’s to the detriment of the team. Dunne should be starting instead of Long. Infact the only thing Long is experienced at is avoiding playing football, largely, for 10 years. Bizarre career and incredibly fortunate to have had as much opportunity in the PL as he’s had.

My feelings precisely. Surely it is better to give Dunne time next to Tarkowski..help him learn. Learn from a very experienced quality pro. Playing Long serves no purpose and leaves Dunne thinking when his chance will be and pondering his future with us.
I am sure Long is out of contract at the end of this season? Surely this is the time to let him go?

You mean “always goes for experience” even if it’s to the detriment of the team. Dunne should be starting instead of Long. Infact the only thing Long is experienced at is avoiding playing football, largely, for 10 years. Bizarre career and incredibly fortunate to have had as much opportunity in the PL as he’s had.
You could put it that way.
I mean his tendency is to go for seasoned players. I think he is averse to trying young players unless forced.

Yes. Things can always go wrong with transfers. This doesn't mean just you stop trying. We've done pretty well overall over the years but the rug had been pulled and it is likely to end badly.

Also said The Turf was v intimidating to come and play at
On a miserable night that's a nice story :D
