Re: Kevin long
The fact we’re trying to figure out who’s the better option - Kevin Long or Jimmy Dunne, for a Premier League defence, says it all. Both nowhere near the required standard (yet in Dunne’s case)

It was just about acceptable to have him as 4th choice in the championship, for him to be playing regular games for us in this league is frightening.
He is a terrible defender, he cannot actually defend very well.
He makes far too many errors and poor choices, there cannot be too many games we win when he is in the side.
Thankfully Sean knows he should be 4th choice at best, and touch wood get the funds to bring in a new 3rd choice CB.
Brilliant MACCA
Re: Kevin long
We had a 15 million CB but he wouldn't sit on the bench all season and so.it blew up and he's gone. So what's the answer?

Aye, he's so used to having Ben to his left.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 10:35 pm100% Play your best player in their preferred position. Not the other way
He kept drifting away from his position, wasn't there to win the headers that he normally does and I believe he would have cut out that Wilson goal.
Re: Kevin long
I don’t like to single out players but it’s criminal that he’s being relied upon for anything other than the odd cameo here or there.

Re: Kevin long
you'd think after being on the bench and 4th choice CB that he'd kind of be chomping at the bit to be playing regularly to try and show what he's made of. That all those years extending contracts, accepting he'd be down the pecking order and waiting for his chance would mean something. I can't believe he's 30 years old, been with us for god knows how long and yet looks so out of his depth. He should know us and football inside out to be able to read a game and step up when necessary. Clearly needs to leave to do something with the rest of his career.

He’s crap. Wouldn’t want him as third choice in a Championship squad.

Would rather we went with Jimmy Dunne now. At least he has the potential to improve a bit.

What a petulant thing to say. Long comes across as thoroughly professional. He may be a little out of his depth in a Premier League defence but that’s not his fault and it’s certainly not a reason to claim he’s stealing a living.snapcrackleandpop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 12:05 pmStealing a living, 30 yrs old and played 174 games, says it all really about his drive and ambition.

Nobody really knows what went on with Gibson, but one thing is true and that is if Ben Mee had not refused to sign a new deal because he was expecting offers from "bigger" clubs Gibson would not have been here, he is/was far to good to be sat on the bench.Marty Dobson wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 1:00 pmGibson showed how to steal a living ..and Tarky by his display last night and his 'sore ' toe episode isn't far off it either. That being said for the odd game he’s a body for backup. Nothing more. He’s had enough chances to prove he can do it. I’d NEVER play him again in front of a promising kid.

On the Hendrick reference show me where I’ve had a go at him. Personally I was sad to see him go as I thought he did a good job tucking in on the right allowing McNeil to play higher on the left

Why do "fans" need to pick on their own players all the time.We should be supporting and encouraging our players not always on their backs.
If a player is giving his best for the team he will do for me. Yes.fans are allowed opinions on players and yes be critical at times but the constant and sometimes angry criticism is just not right.
Sometimes it as though some fans are not happy unless they have a scapegoat.Eagles, Boyd.Jones,Hendrick and now Long just to name a few.Getting on the backs of players will not make them perform better..quite the reverse.
The team will need all the support we can give them this season.

Can you point out where I said it contributed to his performance being worse (or indeed better). It was a off the cuff remark. The funny thing is in the post that’s upset you so much I go onto say he’s fine for a body in the squad but has had plenty of chances to nail down a regular place and failed. Time for the younger lads

I've been very critical on here but it doesn't mean I don't back everyone who plays for us in games. It doesn't mean I don't want them, or Burnley to succeed.
Being critical or non-critical doesn't make you a better or worse fan. It's just a place people can discuss stuff and share opinion and has zero impact on any of our players, or the team.
Some fans want the club to do better, want us to improve on the players we have and are feeling under the weather right now with our league form. Try to see the criticism as a positive thing, and a want for us to improve rather than picking on players or the club.
We are after all all Burnley fans right? Otherwise we wouldn't be here.

Unfortunately was the main fault for the goal, lost his man (Son) and ended up marking nobody. Jamie Carragher just criticised that defending.
BUT - did excellently after a very dodgy first minute where his error got Brownhill booked.
Look, he plays well occasionally, always tries 100%, but is nowhere near it at this level so many times will get caught out. But saying that, he wasn’t the man who gave Spurs the win today, that was Kane (world class at both endsj.

Do you know, tonight was the night when I stopped worrying about Kev Long.
For a while I thought he was immobile, thought he was not Prem quality, thought his distribution was poor, thought he was inexperienced - but now I know that you doubters are a bunch of crazy crack taking buzzards.
Kev Long is a £25 mill defender and he will be King Kev (at least till that work shy fop Bendy Knee comes back then poor Kev will be the forgotten man.) Shame on you Mike Garlick.

A player getting stick for switching off for 5 seconds on goal. Yet the last time Son scored against us he ran through our entire team unopposed with our first choice CH MIA.

Re: Kevin long
Long played well tonight, and he did OK at West Brom, sadly one slip cost us, and once Ben Mee is fit he will return, but Tarks and Long have looked better in the last couple of games, what's cost us is the lack of goals, not necessarily the defence.
Re: Kevin long
He certainly was trying to mark Son as highlighted on Sky. His distribution is appalling but that apart and losing his man for the only goal of the game, he did ok.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:36 pmI thought he had one of his best games for us tonight. Not even close at this level, not his fault - it is Seans. I think the reason many of us bring this up is frustration at why we are in this position of not having proper backup.SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:24 pmLong - nowhere near it at this level?
MoM against a world class attack - superb tonight
But as I said he was excellent tonight. We lost to a corner following Dwight needlessly conceding possession, but I did feel that corner was defended badly. Wood was marking Dier, Tarky was marking Kane, Long was marking Son who had dropped deep. After Kane dropped deep, it all became about whether we would win the second ball if needed.
Long was caught ball watching, lost his man by getting trapped on the other side of Dier (who was clever), and froze, challenging nobody. It allowed Son to pick his spot. Defenders at this level always need to be moving, that (and his glacial turning speed) are his big problems.
But as I said, he was excellent tonight in general, there just always seems to be a crucial error caused by a talent gap which he simply cannot overcome.

Think he saved us 2-3 times though. Watched it back after another poster said Dwight was at fault. Couldn’t remember but amazing how many times losing the ball in an attacking position causes us to concede a goal.
Feel we’ve creates plenty of chances in both games too. Would love us to have another corner or FK routine though.
