Far better than backup.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 2:44 pmCan we even stretch to £4m at the moment or is that beyond us? I think he'd be ok as a backup
He'd be a significant improvement on Bardsley and Lowton at RB IMO, provide excellent cover for either Tarks or Mee, and chip in with a good few goals from set pieces.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like he'll be coming. I doubt we'll find anyone else who ticks those boxes at PL level for that sort of money.

Tarky is back, Mee not long off, and Long who "never let's us down when he fills in" are surely enough.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
We could definitely do with an upgrade at RB, and I think the majority of supporters are not comfortable with the prospect of Kevin Long playing more than the very occasional game. Long should be 4th choice at best. We recently started with Long and Dunne as our centre back pairing - so yes, I'm sure we do.

Dawson's a lifelong Hammer like all of us so it's nailed on.

Come on guys we need a little bit more notice of signing Dawson. We have only known since July when Ben got injured and Mike Rigg's team have not got to the letter D yet in their trawl for a beck-up CH

Garlick isn't yet aware of who Dawson is, nevermind whether he's available. Please be patient and wait until January.

All the ex-West Brom and Forest players we've been historically unable to sign will arrive in a job lot on the same day.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Only reservation I held was that he’s been relegated twice. Not a great record for a CB to hold. Otherwise I thought he offered good experience and goal threat. Given our budget that could’ve worked well. Very disappointed.

@bodenknights
Burnley, as they have since about 2011, were linked again with Dawson, but once it became apparent Tarkowski was staying put, they would have had to convince him to come knowing he would be on the bench every week...

There is some sense to that. In that when Mee is back Dawson would be a backup player.

But that assumes that Mee will be back fully fit in the near future, and that neither he nor Tarkowski pick up significant injuries or suspensions for the rest of the season.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 10:58 amThere is some sense to that. This is what "went wrong" with Gibson. Had either Mee or Tarks picked up injuries and suspensions during his time then he would probably have been seen as a very good signing.
We might not be so lucky with injuries this season. We've already played games with both Mee and Tarks injured, and it only needs either or both to pick up another medium to long term injury and we're very short of options. Personally I find the CB and RB situation worrying, and Dawson would have solved both those issues. (Albeit he can't play in both positions simultaneously! - [before someone points that out])

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
I cannot accept that a professional footballer like Dawson is not going to join Burnley on the basis that he might not make the starting 11.We have barely been able to put a full team together for the last 12 league games. Dawson also knows at RB there is a 36 year old, just about holding his place. By contrast he is going to WHU who are blessed with a lot more defenders and have won the last 2 games by an aggregate of 7-0 against very strong opposition. so unlikely they will be accommodating him in a hurry. He has gone to WHU as back-up, he would have joined us as a regular starter just like Rodriguez has become, as he has the ability to play in two defensive positionsFactualFrank wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 10:58 amThere is some sense to that. I suspect we made no move to get him

I think we will sign Dawson when West Ham have finished with him in about 3 years,he might just still beable to cut it by then

He's about as in the know as the rambling bloke down the pub.
One of the very few journalists that "breaks" news after its officially announced by the club.
But it keeps him in work so money for old rope and all that.

I don't follow. From Dawson's POV, when Ben Mee is back, he's a backup player.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 11:14 amBut that assumes that Mee will be back fully fit in the near future, and that neither he nor Tarkowski pick up significant injuries or suspensions for the rest of the season.
I think you're talking about it from the club's POV, I was on about Dawson's POV, with regards to us having to convince him to come.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
I bet Dawson ends up on the bench at WHU.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Are you telling me Dawson thinks that he’s going to be displacing Dion, Ogbonna and Balbuena as a loan player?
Pull the other one. It’s got bells on.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Maybe our lack of transfers is our reputation for players not getting game time when everyone is fit

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
The way we play Dawson would have been a shoe-in at right back, ready to switch to CB if needed. A 6ft+ right back for set pieces, in addition to Tarks, Mee, Wood and Barnes / Jay would have been brutal.
So it doesn’t wash that he thinks he wouldn’t have played, and with being on loan at West Ham a buy and then a 3 year contract would have been attractive. He could break his leg this season and then he’ll never get a big move again.
More likely is that we never made a move. Which given where we are, is frustrating.

As others have pointed out, he could have probably got a game at right back ahead of Bardsley. And it's highly likely Tarks will be leaving this summer so I'm not buying that claim by Boden at all.

Agree with this. Sure he’d have got game time this year and would’ve been excellent to have a player ready to step in as/when Tarks left.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 1:14 pmThe way we play Dawson would have been a shoe-in at right back, ready to switch to CB if needed. Wouldn’t really like to see Bardsley displaced at RB (done nothing to deserve that, particularly by a CB) but given his goal threat could come on whenever we needed a goal last 20 minutes.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
I've been out - (school run) - so others have covered my points already, but he would have got a lot of games. Probably first choice right back, most likely Mee and Tarks will get injuries and suspensions this time round, (we've been remarkably lucky in that respect up until Mee's injury), and even if he was on the bench he'd most likely get on in the 2nd half most games for Bardsley anyway. Based on his track record he'd probably end up being one of our leading scorers.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 11:41 amI don't follow. Leaving all the above points to one side: do you seriously think he'll get more game time at WHU than he would with us?

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
We either went for him or we didn't. Not sure we'll ever know.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Why have you based his decision sorely on football terms. He’s in his latter stages of his career. Probably just signed his last big contract (any after this will be for less money and years). He also has a chance now to work and live in London (Not saying that London is all that, but to him it might). I’m just stating footballers make decisions on more than just if they are playing or not.warksclaret wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 11:19 amI cannot accept that a professional footballer like Dawson is not going to join Burnley on the basis that he might not make the starting 11.We have barely been able to put a full team together for the last 12 league games. Re: DAWSON AT £4M
I was responding to Boden who stated what had put Dawson off was that the Mee/Tarkowski partnership would keep him out the team and thats why he opted for WHU. Even when both these are fit he would have been a contender for RB, a position he can play well inDyched wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 5:16 pm

I have no idea of his love for London, but he has been there for just over a year. I do know he comes from Rochdale and about 3 years ago had a house built in the NW area, and on one ocassion was very close to signing for us, infact came to watch the team play, and it was looking odds on he would sign
I doubt we even followed it up-do you know otherwise
