Nick Pope- hard as nails
Tonight he got kneed in the face by the unit Keifer Moore who was running at speed. Straight up like nothing happened.
Against Chelsea on the turf someone blasted a shot that hit him flush on the chest. He didn't flinch as the ball rebounded back over the halfway line.
Against Liverpool on the turf a couple of years ago. A Liverpool player had a powerful shot from close range and Pope desperately put his hand out to save it. His wrist never moved on impact.
Tough as nails is our number one.

That's your job as a keeper. Or so I thought until I came for a cross and landed on full back's knee and smashed my ribs 3 weeks ago...

And Moore had to go off with a knee injury as a result.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:57 pmTonight he got kneed in the face by the unit Keifer Moore who was running at speed. Straight up like nothing happened.

Didn't even blink. Like Ben Mee with the header off the line 5 years ago or so...Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:57 pmTonight he got kneed in the face by the unit Keifer Moore who was running at speed. Straight up like nothing happened.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
good performance from Pope tonight, in his previous one he was a bit reluctant to come off his line for crosses, tonight it was a "get out of the way that ball is mine" - he is everything that Pickford isn't.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
I know it is slightly off topic but I thought his distribution last night showed he can play to Southgate's style. That for me was the biggest thing outside not making any errors in the list of things I would have expected him to be focused on.
Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
As good as he is,sadly he wont play the next game.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
Let no one down last night. His long throws were accurate and he was chipping it over players heads to find a team mate. Of course he was passing to England players where the ball sticks and who have great control. He made things look easy and that one on one he did brilliantly with, could have led to a Wales goal.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
I remember Lee Dixon saying last night on the commentary that he prefers a goalkeeper to be better with his hands than his feet as pope's kicking was being compared to Pickford's. I agree with him. Have we seriously got to a point in the game where a goalkeepers handling ability isn't a preference over his kicking? It beggars belief. He is there to stop shots.

He's probably got a sore jaw/cheek bone today. That was quite a knock.
Played well, did everything right.
Won't play in the serious games unless something happens to Pickford.

Henry Winter - in the print edition of The Times (though, oddly, not in the online edition this morning):
"Ings goal would have brought smiles at Turf Moor, and Burnley deserve plenty of praise for their influence in the careers of four players on view here, Ings, Nick Pope, Michael Keane and Trippier."
Would be some team if those 4 were available to line up in Claret and Blue - even if we still have a CB who hasn't been significantly included in Gareth Southgate's plans.

Commanded his box and did everything asked of him. Pickfords on notice.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
He is there to stop conceding goals simple as, whether that’s with his head, shoulders, arms, elbows, knees & legs, distribution only really matters if it results in conceding a goal or delays a quick clear advantageous counter offensive, he’ll be judged on clean sheets as already mentioned & you couldn’t fault that last night.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 9:16 amI remember Lee Dixon saying last night on the commentary that he prefers a goalkeeper to be better with his hands than his feet as pope's kicking was being compared to Pickford's. Yes you are right. What a line up we would have.I loved watching Trippier and Ings and Wallace playing down our right flank with Deano there as well.
Is Keane better than Tarks? I think he just edges it

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
Not sure what GS was hoping to learn from last night with regard to NP. Maybe it was just an exercise in being able to say he’s had a look at the alternatives in a competitive game and decided that JP still edges it. Obviously we all know that Nicks better than Pickford, (as is Henderson) but he seems to want something different than a keeper who comes for crosses and commands his area, makes great saves and communicates with his team, whilst not making glaring errors.
The number one position for England seems to be one of those positions that belongs to the current incumbent regardless of form. I’d be pleasantly surprised to see Nick start another game for England, but I won’t hold my breath.
Quite a few other players took their chance last night, none more so than Grealish and C-L but we have seen players take their chance before only to be returned to the fringes in favour of the bigger names.

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
I remember my teacher at primary school telling me the name NORI brick was a result of somebody putting the letters the wrong way round in the brick mould as it was called an IRON brick. At the time I didn't believe somebody could be so stupid.... and why didn't they just change it...... 40 years later I still have the same thoughts.......

Re: Nick Pope- hard as nails
I think its bit of an urban myth that, as the N would have been the wrong way around. I believe the correct explanation is that they wrote IRON vertically on some of the factory chimneys, but people read it the other way round. (That could also be a myth, but I think I've seen a photo).Sutton-Claret wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 10:52 amI remember my teacher at primary school telling me the name NORI brick was a result of somebody putting the letters the wrong way round in the brick mould as it was called an IRON brick.
