Trans World Sport
Trans World Sport
Who remembers this programme on Chanel 4?
I think it was Saturday mornings. Covered all obscure sports from around the world.

Loved it.
Covered that game they play around Colne where you tap a release, a ball pops up in the air and you hit it as far as you can with a very flexible extended golf club.
A good mate of mine, Andy Smith RIP, could brag his Dad was world champion at that.
I'm sure somebody will come on and remind me of it’s proper name.

Used to love it!
Always remember watching it before my shift as a Saturday lad in a butchers when I was about 14.
Remember trying to get my head around kabaddi (sp).

Re: Trans World Sport
I didn't know it was a proper game, I remember when I was a little 'un going to some fair at Broughton Hall on the A59, and my mates dad became obsessed by it, so much so he stumped up the cash to buy a set for himself to whack balls round Loveclough Rec!! It was like hitting a heavy ping pong ball with the thick end of a stick!!!huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 8:51 pmLoved it.

When I saw the headline, I thought this was a new LGBTQ sports league.

Re: Trans World Sport
Apparently Colne had no less than four world champions and they used to play Knur & Spell over at the Hargreaves Arms (known locally as the Monkroyd). It was also widely played around Halifax and the Calder Valley and there have been attempts to revive it over the years. Lots of interesting info here http://northernlifemagazine.co.uk/knur-and-spell/
I think the Knurr variation must have been played around Accrington and Blackburrrn where they sound their rrrs different!

Re: Trans World Sport
I'm from Colne and Len Kershaw..who is one of the Knurr & Spell champs mentioned and pictured in that excellent article...was a good friend of my dad's though I have lost touch with him since my dad died in 2018. Len was also Colne's traffic warden and therefore well known in the town for other reasons too, I also clearly remember meeting Sam Ansell as a child and being told of his prowess at Knurr & Spell.
