Still missing the turf?

Post by Terrier » Tue Oct 13, 2020 1:17 pm

I have gone on the turf for over 55yr now with varying
degrees of interest, strangely going downhill in the prem
but i am surprised just how much i am NOT missing the
turf, just hoping the spark will return!

Yes!

I don't get to go on a lot of games but I go when I can. I think its the fact I've lost the choice I think.

I am, even more so as we have had a poor start, watching it with your mates and going for a beer after helps relieve the stress, it’s a nightmare watching at home.

Purely going on the Turf no, however inclusive if my usual pre an post match routines, then yes.

If there becomes a time where we are offered an option to attend where we must arrive at 14:55, watch with social distancing measures, then leave and go home, then I'll be declining such offer regardless.

Watching Burnley is much more than watching the game on my own for 90 minutes.

If only I was personally missing games, I would. But we’re all in the same position so I feel I’m not missing out on something. Bit like if you don’t go out with your mates when they do. But when nobody's out, you don’t miss it.

But I am missing visiting places more so America. 2 years Saturday since I’ve been after 7 visits in 4 years. I had so much planned to do there this year. Which is really getting be down at the minute.

I'm lucky enough to see the home games, but without fans, it feels like a chore.

It's the little things, the staff you interact with are not in or don't venture into our area, so to typical footy chit-chat you have with the usual people doesn't happen. Feels like working on a reserve game.

Missing match day, some weeks more than others.

I started losing a bit of excitement after a few years in the premier league, but I miss meeting friends and having a few beers and a laugh.

In a strange way Im missing the freezing cold games, after a crap week at work the Turf and day out on a Saturday was all I looked forward to

Yep, missing it a lot.

Pre match couple of beers, setting my bets up and chatting about what’s ahead. The anticipation is a buzz...

Watching our underdog clarets put a proper shift in, hopefully spoiling the away day for our visitors, bene n hot at half time...

Then a couple of beers dissecting the game, and the players, usually followed by a curry.

Yeah I’m missing it. I’m a Burnley fan, not necessarily a football fan, so the whole tv thing is doing nothing for me. For the first time in many many years I don’t know who we’re playing next or when... I have lost something, and I want it back.

Yes I am and will likely still be missing it when the ground re-opens. It is just not the same as it used to be. I enjoyed it more when we were in the lower divisions.

VAR, money grabbing clubs, players virtue signalling, racism, VAR, money grabbing players, VAR, money grabbing TV companies, matches played at inconvenient awkward times and VAR are all reasons why I doubt that I'll be returning after the pandemic.

Or the racism. What ******* shite. Sick of hearing this thing currently about “how football used to be”. You get the same with older people abojt the 60’s and how great it was (purely because of the music) but in general terms, modern life is so much better.

Would have said missing it just a bit as at least can usually watch the games, but then this popped up on my youtube page the other day

Massively missing the crowd, atmosphere, passion.

Glad football is being played as it offers some respite from the misery (or adds to it ) but not being there is starting to get to me.

You're thinking that racism in football - or anywhere else for that matter - shouldn't be challenged, Dyched, or have I misunderstood your point ?

Apart from the racism comment, all fair enough.

I don’t think that racism is a massive issue in spoiling the game. Relevant yes, abhorrent yes, but it’s in decline despite what certain people would have you believe. It’s called out more, and rightfully so, but I remember the seventies and the game was very, very different then. Any form of racism is unacceptable, but what is considered racist today wasn’t years ago. I’m not saying that’s right, but what I am saying is people are less tolerant to it now and because of increased reporting and calling it out it looks like it’s on the increase.

The 70's was terrible for racism. The National Front used to be handing leaflets out outside the ground as you went in (likewise the JW's).

Over the last few years I can't remember any game that I have been to in which I have heard any racism at all at a match. I have sat next to people of different races at one time or another and exchanged pleasantries and views about the game. I thought that racism had been kicked out of football. Then all of a sudden it is back at the forefront.

The players start doing a gesture at the start of the match and then in response some alleged racist chap flies a banner from a plane whilst they are doing it. I hope that all this hasn't stirred up a hornets nest for when the fans return to the grounds. In some instances in America fans have booed players who were doing the gesture thing. I would hate to see this happening at Burnley.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKoW6dd_Tc4

I like to see all people as just another person - not as a person segregated by their racial group, sexuality or whatever else. I hate racism and I don't like anything that stirs up racism or any other ism for that matter.

Miss the whole thing, particularly away games. Hard to believe that I haven't seen the people I go to football with since early March too. It's not the 90 minutes though.

Not missing the football itself at all, don't really care about the Prem at the moment, more than happy watching grassroots.

100% missing the day out at the Turf though, seeing friends you only see on match day, chatting in the pub, walking down Tod Road, the atmosphere and even driving back over the Woodhead in the dark listening to the late kick off on the radio.

Missing the day out, the match build up and banter but not as much as I thought. Too many other things to think about right now and I get to watch my son play football which I really enjoy. Without the latter probably more so.

Definitely missing the whole before, during, and after, match day experience.

Shuffled the songs on my Alexa workout playlist this afternoon and 1st track on was 'Foo Fighters 'Times like these' - felt very nostalgic!

Looking forward to the day it's blasting out on the big screen at The Turf again.

I’m missing it and not enjoying the new football. Sport needs fans.

The first proper game back (not a silly one with reduced capacity) will be like the first game of a new season x 10!

Yes, definitely missing it. It's not about the match, it's the whole match day experience, for me it's the fish, chips & curry at the Park View before the match wearing your football shirt. A couple of drinks of the alcoholic variety after the game. A chance to meet up with friends before the match and listen to that noise of expectation on Harry Potts Way. For me, the Turf is not about turning up for 90 minutes and then going home.

I do miss it to a degree and miss everything that goes with it, like a few pints, meeting mates, away trips on the train etc,etc but I definitely think we'd all miss it a lot more if we were forced to watch footy on TV, BUT the grounds were full of fans and the atmosphere bouncing. Watching on TV when the ground is empty doesn't particularly make me long to be out there, but if there were people in the stands and a genuine noise from a genuine crowd, I think we'd all get the buzz and feel we were missing something.

Made worse recently with all the talk of yet another reshuffle of the Premier league with greedy bxxxxxxs Liverpool and United owners wanting to wreck our national game.
These Americans will never understand our game but are intent on screwing every penny out of the game.I personally hate the Fake Champions league and the Euro nonsense England are in and dont want any expansion of Euro football

Same here.

Lots of things are conspiring to take football away from us.

For me, C-19 is almost an irrelevance.

The penalty for handball when the player has his back to play, the Big Picture, the embarrassing Henderson penalty, the cheating, the diving, the whole thing is switching me off to the Premier League. I think the final nail in the coffin will be selling up to some Chicken Farmers from Pune (or similar).

Missing the Turf? Yes

Missing Football? No

Yes. I'm missing the match day experience a lot, which is being compounded by the ever increasing feeling that it won't be coming back, certainly not as it was anyway.

I think during 'normal times' we just about managed to gloss over the cynical and ugly sides of the game, but that's all out of the window now.

I'm struggling to retain interest in what is essentially a dying and collapsing product, with the league desperate to rip struggling fans off one last time before the whole thing goes bang, and with a few hyper-wealthy clubs staging a power grab in the name of charity to the poor and weak clubs. I think I'm almost done with the whole thing, to be honest.

I'm sure that much of the cynicism comes from the fact that Burnley have lost their opening 3 games, and have failed so spectacularly in the transfer market when most of our rivals have been proactive strengthening their squads.

If the posts on this thread are representative of football in general I think that the Premier league, clubs, TV companies need to do a lot of thinking before the fans are invited back into the stadiums.
  • A number of posters say they don't miss it or don't miss it much.
  • A number say it's the whole matchday experience that they miss rather than the two hours spent at the ground.
  • A number miss it lots.
  • A number would miss it more but for all of the greed and other crud that comes packaged with it.
  • A number are not impressed with TV football when the fans are not in the stadium
  • A smaller number think that the whole Premier league/football thing is about to implode.
