410 viewings in six hours as I write and no comment.

I'll pass comment: You're a morbid lot, if nothing else...

Great observational photographer, I've never appreciated his approach to composition

I think a good artist knows what is 'just so', whatever that is.

Pstotto, sorry only just seen this thread. Too much negativity on this forum so I’m not bothering to log on as much.

Chris Killip was an excellent photographer and a sensitive human. His images capture a period of history and mostly of working class life.

If you like his work, you might appreciate John Bolloten or Ian Beesley. Ian has a huge body of work especially with the Bradford NHS hospitals.

Anyone who likes the older documentary work should check out John Bulmer and Homer Sykes. There is also Vanley Burke who documented black immigrant’s lives in Birmingham. That’s a unique body of work.

Forgot to mention Shirley Baker who documented Manchester and the surrounding areas in the 50’s, 60’s... and also Tish Murtha in Newcastle in the 70’s. Fabulous stuff!

Very sad news. Killip’s photographs documenting the North East shipbuilding communities and their subsequent decline took my breath away.

LCP, my interest is not so much the social photos but the pictures of environments, people with a backdrop, not Face Magazine heroine chic or whatever.

I like his shipbuilding pictures, where there is a greater subject than punks posing etc.

I'm not interested in social photography per se.

The parade of people I know.

I don't like photography bigging up social issues.

There's an element of the sublime to his shipbuilding pictures, that creates a context of life.

I find social issues a bore in art.
