Rodney Dangerfield was brilliant!
Ricky Gervais currently.
Bernard Manning was another.
I'm no expert though.

Re: Your Top Comedians?
The late great Rik Mayall and Ade Edmunson met them once. Two brilliant guys. I was working at Cambridge Corn Exchange after school and weekends from age 13, I lied about my age!
These two where great, Rik accidently got punched for real by Ade, he carried on another 15 mins to break. Ice for the nose, coffee and half a bottle of brandy, 20 mins later back on stage. Gave me a £50 note (I had never seen one in my life! Was on £3 a hour at the time)
And a photo of him in new statesman with a hand drawn speech bubble saying "I sh@gged Thatcher!"
Met Ben Elton, Jethro and Jimmy Jones as well!

Mae Martin is very funny. First became aware of them through their appearance on Richard Osmans House of Games ( I know -really down with the kids) and then a show on Radio 4 - A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality.
Very sharp, very witty, and for a non- Brit (Canadian) an astute commentator on our society.

Here's a list of my favourites off the top of my head
Stewart Lee
Norm McDonald
Bill Burr
George Carlin
James Ascaster
Limmy
Louis CK
My general rule of thumb is that if they regularly appear on panel shows, they're not really for me… they're alright I suppose but they’re a bit plain.
I want comedians to do something interesting and creative.

Jimmy Cricket was a special guest at our college. I thought he was great, but he went down like a lead balloon among the students.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 3:06 amA mention for Jimmy Cricket. I don’t know what happened to him but he always raised a smile.
Absolutely lovely man.
As he was leaving, he got into his car, he let the handbrake off and it rolled towards into a wall with a crunch. He rolled down he window and shouted “The good news is, I can't go any further!” he reversed out and left the campus without when checking the damage.

Re: Your Top Comedians?
At the moment fave stand up is Russell Kane. Seen him live 4 times in last 3 or 4 years.
Of all time though mostly for the tv programmes they have made it’s between Peter Kay, Rick Mayall and Steve Coogan. I’d put Ricky Gervais just behind these 3.
Americans - again for the films they have made it’s Steve Martin, Gene Wilder, Richard Prior and Robin Williams.

Re: Your Top Comedians?
That's what got me into him. I thought I'd check it out after hearing it was alright. I thought it was pretentious at first - just saying absurd things for cheap laughs, and then I saw that he wrapped everything together. Then he does it again over four specials, which is impressive.claret2018 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 5:43 pmJames Acaster’s 4 part special on Netflix is as good as any standup I’ve seen

Re: Your Top Comedians?
Norm Macdonald was one of those characters who was just funny whatever came out of his mouth. Probably my favourite stand-up although he’s probably better known for his appearances on the US Letterman show and Conan. Sadly no longer with us, but an absolute gem.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 5:09 pmHere's a list of my favourites off the top of my head

I love how Norm could command a room and stumble through a joke, which, in the end, wasn't that funny. I only got him to him shortly before he died.

The joke he did on his podcast with Steven Merchant anout uncle Terry is just effortlessly brilliant. I listen to his guests reading out jokes all the time it's great. Re: Your Top Comedians?
Stewart Lee for me, but then I am clever enough to appreciate him...
Impossible to list all the others i enjoy or have enjoyed but many of those mentioned upthread i would concur with. Such a shame we hardly see any of them on the telly any more, it's always the painfully unfunny panel show mob spreading their woke progressive 'Tory bstards' routine.
I've seen Doddy twice, the last time not that many years ago at King George's Blackburn. He let us go about half midnight. We'd been there since 7.30 i think. I took my parents who thought they'd be back home by 10 but loved every minute of it. Same act for 50 odd years but the master.
I also saw Manning twice, neither particularly by choice,
once at a corporate 'sportsman's dinner' at Old Trafford cricket ground when i was not long out of uni. I have to say that i thought he was hilarious and better in that forum than on the telly, and so did everyone else (in the almost entirely white male crowd....) but this was the late 90s, a different era!

Re: Your Top Comedians?
Sort of becoming a cliche choice now, but I haven't seen better than Stewart Lee. An absolute master of his craft, outstanding live.
Re: Your Top Comedians?
Mark Thomas another one - loved his channel 4 telly show years ago. Very much a Marxist but i often found myself nodding along. Despite his views i never found his material jarred like it would if listening to one of today's younger leftie comics.
Bob Monkhouse not mentioned but was "the comics' favourite comic" and a legend - and a brilliant performer/quickly witted.
Les Dawson needs a mention. Hardly really a stand up but clearly a very funny, multi-facted entertainer as well as a well-educated, articulate and clever man despite his poor Manc upbringing.

One of the best upcoming comedians who is getting a lot of positive reviews is Matt Bragg. A star of this years Edinburgh Fringe, he is supporting Ricky Gervais at the London Palladium later this month and has appeared with him on his tours throughout Europe. He is very clever, witty, dead pan.

Totally agree - I’ve seen him 4 times live and he was brilliant.
First time I saw him was at Mechanics.
When we got there he said that they only had sold 50 or so tickets so he arranged for us to be moved to the bar area and they set up some chairs for us. He was still absolutely great.
The other thing I have been to 5 or 6 times is 8 out of 10 cats does countdown live at Media City in Salford, The show is about 2 hours long before the edit. Seen loads of good people on that - Lee Mack, Jonny Vegas, Rod Gilbert, Sean Locke and many many more. Jimmy Carr is excellent - very funny and really professional. If it was not for him keeping all the other comedians in check I honestly don’t think they would ever finish the show !!
