Your Top Comedians?

Post by FactualFrank » Tue Oct 20, 2020 6:53 pm

Who do you think are the funniest current comedians?

Been to see Josh Widdicombe twice, in Leeds and Harrogate. Very very funny.

Lee Mack is very funny, as is Sean Locke and joe Wilkinson.

Opposite end of the scale for me are Miranda and Michael McIntyre.

Yeah, I’m going Lee Mack.

Sounds like we like the same sort of humour.

Recommendations: Not Going Out, 2 and a half men (with Charlie Sheen), Married with Children, Impractical Jokers.

Frankie Boyle is brilliant (and very offensive) on occasions.

Sean Lock and Kevin Bridges are great too.

I enjoy sarcasm frank, and quick wit. Lee Mack has that nailed. Not going out is excellent. I’ll check the others out cheers frank.

I don’t normally like the kind of comedy that joe Wilkinson does, but he’s the exception. Very funny indeed. 8 out of ten cats does countdown is fantastic. Best comedy show on telly for me.

Yeah I like those too. With Bridges his accent goes a long way to making him sound funnier. He just randomly rolls off the lines. Sean Lock is someone who is old fashioned, in a funny way. Takes the **** out of the youth of today.

If you like the link in my OP, he's worth going to see. Josh Widdicombe. Very funny and I only like comedians if I'm laughing all the way through.

Lee Mack is a big Blackburn Rovers fan ( seriously) so he needs a sense of humour.

A bit too crude for some, but Jimmy Carr's deadpan stand up material is hilarious.

Stewart Lee and Ricky Gervais are two of my favourite stand ups of recent times. I saw James Acaster’s stand up about a year ago and wasn’t expecting to like it but found him very good.

Not a stand up, but I’d love to be pals with Bob Mortimer. Just a naturally hilarious person who tells a great story.

Seen Lee Mack live four times - including the first time I saw him at Mechanics when because only around 50 tickets were sold he took us all out of the main room and into the bar area and set up chairs for us. He was brilliant !

Loads of comedians I like - Peter Kay, Frank Skinner, Frankie Boyle, Rhod Gilbert and many more. Seen them all live too - many of them a number times.
Saw Ben Elton live many years ago at Blackburn and that was one of the funniest live shows I’ve ever seen.

One of the best recent ones I’ve seen is Russell Kane - would highly recommend anyone who has not seen his live stand up.

One of the worst live gigs I’ve seen was Stephen Amos at the Lowry. Proper chip on his shoulder and hated Burnley which he mentioned lots in his very unfunny routine !

Frankie Boyle.

Dave Chappelle

Chris Rock

Kevin Hart

Bill Burr

Wanda Sykes

Billy Connolly

Lee Evans

Ricky Gervais

Lee Mack

Russell Howard

Jack Whitehall.

I can't remember the rest that I like, but I do tend to prefer American comedians

Watch, "Would I Lie To You" - Bob Mortimer is bloody hilarious.

Stewart Francis, very funny - he's like Tim Vine with the puns.

Yeah I’ve seen every episode of WILTY to my knowledge, and he’s by far the best guest. His stories are ridiculous. Lee Mack is also very good on it.

I think that’s Stewart Francis with the puns.

Stewart Lee my fave too - saw him live in Preston a few years back and he was brilliant.

The late Tommy Cooper was the funniest person I have seen doing a live show in my life . Having said that I haven't seen any of the modern comedians live, so can't really comment: however, if they are half as funny as Tommy Cooper then they are very good indeed.

I love Bob Mortimer - one of the genuinely funniest people I have ever seen.
Love Steve Coogan too who is not strictly stand up either but he’s done for me some of the best comedy shows and characters in my lifetime.
Similar theme Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield both very funny and great comic performers and writers.

American wise likes of Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior and Robin Williams were all genius stand ups. Mel Brooks was a genius too.
More recently in terms of writers and actors I love Larry David - Curb your Enthusiasm is one of the funniest things ever made for me. And a new series has been commissioned for any fans.

Yeah you're spot on with that. Francis.

I think the downside to puns with Stewart Francis and Tim Vine is the duration. It starts off funny, but quickly tires out.

Not sure if you've seen it, but I think one of the funniest ever films is "See No Evil, Hear No Evil"

Yes very funny. If you like that watch a couple of their earlier films Stir Crazy and Silver Streak - even better IMHO.
Gene Wilder is in my favourite comedy film ever - Young Frankenstein - written / produced by Mel Brooks.

Read Gene Wilders autobiography a few years ago which was really interesting
Wilder and Richard Prior were brilliant together but very different people. Prior was a womaniser, alcoholic and heroin addict. Wilder was a classically trained actor and fell into playing comedy roles. Amazing that 2 people so different can have such brilliant comic chemistry together....just shows that a lot of comedians are great actors too (or vice versa !)

I dread to think of Marty Feldman reading Gene Wilder's autobiography...

Watched Stir Crazy and Silver Streak. Sounds like we both have an excellent sense of humour.

Funniest scene ever is when Gene Wilder is "blacked up" - probably wouldn't get away with it now, but his dancing and going through passport control(?)... one of the funniest things I've ever watched.

Probably James Acaster for me at the minute. His 4 or 5 shows on Netflix are superb.

His book is also worth a read.

For me comedy has just become an endless trail of "stand-up" acts, basically telling me what I already see only a bit funnier in delivery.

Another fan of Tim Vine here.

Many moons ago when I was a mere lurker - someone here asked about this guy, a comedian with an unusual act, back in the 80s.Roy Jay.
