Veterans railcard
So a new railcard available to ‘veterans’ of the armed forces . Qualifying period of one day in the forces . One day . How can you be a veteran if you only spent one day in the mob? Plenty join up and pack it in after a few days or weeks which is fine but to regard them as veterans makes a bit of a joke of this . An ID card for walts.

On the subject of railcards, I renewed mine last Feb and still haven’t made any use of it.

Renewed for 3 years early this year and not used it yet.
Doubt we'll get compensation as they'll say the trains are still running.

Not an issue really. It’s a one year card and only costs £10 when you get it through Tesco.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 11:37 amYes we're the same.

Re: Veterans railcard
Renewed my 3 year rail card at the end of last year
Used it for the trip to Newcastle end of February so have a good return in savings so far.
Hope we will be able to get to matches sometime next season ( late 2021 or early 2022)

Re: Veterans railcard
I agree 1 day is silly, but then how do you decide what it should be? What about the soldier who igns up and gets injured in training. They have still got injured while serving their country.Dixie Normous wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:56 amSo a new railcard available to ‘veterans’ of the armed forces . I think its another case where it is better to cover a few Walts, as you say, if that means not excluding anyone who got an early injury which curtailed what otherwise could have been a long career of service.

Re: Veterans railcard
I don't particularly disagree, but a 3 year card cost us £70 each, (maybe we should try Tesco next time, though we don't shop there).ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 11:45 amNot an issue really. It’s a one year card and only costs £10 when you get it through Tesco.
So we've shelled out £140, and I don't see us getting anything back for many months yet.

Re: Veterans railcard
I do most of my shopping at Tesco and you get £3 off a railcard for £1 worth of Club Card points so it basically gets you one for £10. The Palace trip would have got me my tenner back.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 1:18 pmI don't particularly disagree, but a 3 year card cost us £70 each, (maybe we should try Tesco next time, though we don't shop there).

I got 2 rail cards, £70, for 3 years in summer 2016. Used them once.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 1:18 pmI don't particularly disagree, but a 3 year card cost us £70 each, (maybe we should try Tesco next time, though we don't shop there).

I'll look out for Tesco offer if/when we decide we need rail cards again.

Re: Veterans railcard
You can only get a one year railcard with the offer but you get £3 off for every £1 worth of club card points. So in effect you are using £10 worth of shopping points to get a card. Over three years that only costs you £10. It's included in the Tesco Club Card App.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 1:37 pm

Being a "Cod War vet" myself I can see where your coming from. Qualifying period one day is just enough to ask the question "Who is missing their Mummies?Dixie Normous wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:56 amSo a new railcard available to ‘veterans’ of the armed forces . You need to get out more!! (when we eventually can).Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 1:37 pmI got 2 rail cards, £70, for 3 years in summer 2016. Used them once.

Also you can link the card to your Oyster card for off-peak journeys, so if you're in London the saving can be massive.

I've had a free "Boris card" Oyster travel since I turned 60 - takes me as far as Watford (away) with no travel costs. I've not used it since March...
Yes, I remember "getting out." I retired earlier this year - with plans to travel - most of them would not have qualified for railcard discounts - unless Virgin does a rail/fly card.
PS: I assume mentioning a "boris card" is ok - despite the "no political threads" discussion?
For political balance - it would probably be known as a "livingstone card" if the previous London mayor had got back in.

Re: Veterans railcard
I had previously started using my credit card on London Underground but found I could link and Oyster card and get 30% off. Only problem is, when you need to renew your rail card you have to go through the process again and it can only be done at selected stations I believe. I'm in London so rarely I went back to using my credit card.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 3:02 pmAlso you can link the card to your Oyster card for off-peak journeys, so if you're in London the saving can be massive.

Is that for any of the railcards CT? Like the 2 together or family?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 1:28 pmI do most of my shopping at Tesco and you get £3 off a railcard for £1 worth of Club Card points so it basically gets you one for £10. The Palace trip would have got me my tenner back.

Just looking now, and it's available forQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 3:53 pmIs that for any of the railcards CT? Like the 2 together or family?
16-25 Railcard
Disabled Persons Railcard
Family & Friends Railcard
Senior Railcard
Two Together Railcard
For any of them, you can get £3 off for £1 worth of ClubCard vouchers. I do most of my shopping there and so always have enough to get the full railcard for £10 worth of vouchers. It was easy to do via the ClubCard App too.
The one I bought in Feb is the third I have had on this offer.

Re: Veterans railcard
You get 1 clubcard point for every pound spent.
They then send through the post 3 or 4 times a year.
Doesn't seem a lot but it adds up.

Re: Veterans railcard
I'd already paid for my Palace trip (Manchester to Euston) which I did get back. The saving with a railcard would have more than paid for the cost of it. Being old does have some advantages.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 4:06 pmBrilliant. I will purchase one next year when we're allowed to travel to games.

With easy access to Manchester it makes it far more beneficial to go on the trains these days.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 4:09 pmI'd already paid for my Palace trip (Manchester to Euston) which I did get back. Going to Newcastle earlier this year was brilliant on the train but we only do a few a year, so the £30 charge was 50/50 to it's benefits.
But £10 is no brainer.

Re: Veterans railcard
Companies like Trans pennine have delay repay schemes. Where any refunds are done automatically and no need to chase. Worth signing up before any journeys with them. When our train to Sheff Utd didn't turn up I had to get everyone's train ticket numbers to claim back, take photos and email.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 4:09 pmI'd already paid for my Palace trip (Manchester to Euston) which I did get back. Even though they had all this information from booking online.

At the current rate it may be known a a Boris card as he's trying to get rid of them.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 3:47 pm...
