Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
I had this problem yesterday, thought it was the battery in the mouse so changed it and it worked.
However same problem today. Any ideas?

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Is it a wireless mouse? If so check the usb dongle is pushed all the way in, or unplug the usb dongle and put it in another usb port

If it’s one of the old style with a ball, check the rollers for crap buildup from dust take the ball out). A damp cotton bud can normally clean any clogging.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Some of the suggestions wouldn't have worked.
Bosscat - cheese. sorry but I'm allergic to cheese
Dazzler - cat, again sorry but I can't cope with having a cat anywhere near me.
Now posting from the computer with mouse working, there is a problem somewhere though, this is the second time in two days.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Even modern mice with sensors can get dirty. Some kind of driver issue with a mouse is rare but not impossible.
I'd clean the sensor with a damp cloth or with a cotton bud. When the mouse is upside down make sure there's a light showing, usually red or white. Don't look directly at it as it can damage your sight but see if it's noticeable.
Search for an on off switch and toggle it.
Try on a different computer.

That light isn't working now - always used to have a red light. I suspect this suggests it is the mouse but there again I'm no expert.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 1:52 pmEven modern mice with sensors can get dirty. Some kind of driver issue with a mouse is rare but not impossible.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
If there's an on off switch toggle that and if not it may be the way the battery is positioned, could be loose or not fitting right or the metal connectors could be eroded or damaged.
Could also be the battery you put in is dead also.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Is your keyboard wireless or do you have a USB device you can check the port functionality?
If so, see if it works intermittently. If it works fine then amazon prime may be your friend if you want to avoid going out in this weather.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
I'm a bit nervous of taking out the USB to be honest in case I can't get it working again - the keyboard is the oldest part of my equipment. Had a wireless one which was poor so went back to the original from the 1990s and still using it.clarethomer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:13 pmIs your keyboard wireless or do you have a USB device you can check the port functionality?

It might be worth getting a new one from Amazon. I've got a Prime free month just now so it would arrive tomorrow.

Two ports next to each other. I've just stuck a phone charger in the other and my phone is charging.clarethomer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:13 pmIs your keyboard wireless or do you have a USB device you can check the port functionality?

Hit firmly several times with palm of your hand on the back of it.
Then, failing this, try a hammer.
Finally call out radio rentals. it's probably a burnt out valve.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
I was simply trying to work out whether it was the port that was causing the intermittent issues with your mouse - OR whether it was your mouse just failing?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:37 pmTwo ports next to each other. If the 2 USB ports are next to each other, it is possible that they are sharing components inside your machine.
If your phone is charging OK and your mouse is still working, that still may not tell you the answer. However, if your mouse stopped working and your phone was charging, then you could then you plug your mouse into that port to see if that works.
I would get your mouse from amazon but if the ports the issue, its a waste of money (although a spare is always handy).

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
I'll see how things go. If it doesn't work tomorrow then I can play around with ports to see whether my phone charges. There are also some USB ports at the back too, could try one of those. I just worry about trying something now and it then not working afterwards.clarethomer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:46 pmI was simply trying to work out whether it was the port that was causing the intermittent issues with your mouse - OR whether it was your mouse just failing?

'1990's' is the clue!
For a couple of quid, your anxiety can be cured!
I have to admit that too have the notion that, if it worked yesterday, there is no reason why today should be any different.
Sometimes, it just is.

Did you know the movement of your mouse is measured in "Mickeys" a "Mickey is the smallest movement used when moving your cursor on your computer screen ....

I’ve had this with my Bluetooth mouse also Tony. Can’t remember for the life of me what the fix was, sorry. May be worth switching Bluetooth on/off in Settings or disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:49 pmI'll see how things go. If it packs in, I have a good Microsoft Bluetooth mouse you can have. I keep loosing them, buying another & finding them again

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Something needs to, can't even guess how much time I've spent on it over the past 24 hours with a wonderful collection of phone calls to various people gathering information.
I'm just hoping everyone behaves themselves on here tonight because I want a quiet evening in front of my (old) television before making tomorrow a very special day for two reasons - both anniversaries, one for someone at our football club and the other for a very special former poster.

Go to device manager and check each USB port individually. Sometimes windows 10 fails to reset usb 3 ports

Could it be something as simple as the pc doing a tidy up and shutting everything else down while it works away?. Walk away and give it 10 minutes.

That’s really kind of you, thanks. But I’ve one being delivered tomorrow by Amazon. I’ll see how things are tomorrow but since I got it working today it’s been fine so it suggests it’s not the mouse itself.

Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
Sometimes a mouse stops working because the driver for it becomes confused by randomly clicking on something inadvertently. When this happens the mouse becomes "unenabled" in its settings page. The solution is to go into Settings, choose Devices for mouse/printers/bluetooth etc You will then see a list of devices for your machine which will include one for the mouse. There is often a dialogue box telling you whether your mouse is working correctly or not. If it isn't then there should be a section asking you to enable the mouse. Do this and it should be fine. Often my touchpad becomes unenabled in the same way. You can get into the settings section by using a combination of the Tab button and the arrow keys when the mouse or touchpad is not working. Hope this helps.
Re: Computer help needed - mouse doesn’t move
This is the giveaway fault - the power to your mouse is being interrupted - the red laser should always illuminate. Probably battery terminals as mentioned aboveClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 1:53 pmThat light isn't working now - always used to have a red light.
